Prologue

In the middle of the forest, a battle was taking place. A battle for survival. A battle between an army of ants and a scorpion. The ants surrounded the scorpion and attached it. But the scorpion kept fighting on as it slayed many ants in its path. A little boy of 8 years old watched as the two insect species fought each other. He wore a white bandanna on his head and fire nation clothing. A man walked up to the child. He had a goatee and mustache on his face with his hair tied in a bun. He wore a yellow shinobi costume with black highlights. "Look, what do you see?" The man said to the boy.

"Papa, the scorpion," the boy replied, "it needs help."

"Life is cruel, Satoshi," the man began to teach his son, "it doesn't matter where you are from. What god you pray to. So you must face it head on. Look at the scorpion. It is fast. It is strong. But do you know why the scorpion is feared? It's will." The scorpion continued to fight the ants even when it was completely surrounded by them. "Promise me you will remember to be strong."

"I will papa."

"Now, let's get home. Your mother is making dinner, and she won't be happy if we're late." The man carried the boy over his shoulders and began to walk back home. He was Hanzo Hisashi, the grand master of a clan of ninjas in the fire nation called the Shirai Ryu.

As night fell, they returned to a village on the edge of the forest. Hanzo carried his son through the gate of the village. As they walked, Hanzo noticed that no one was out in the streets. It may have turned dark, but not a single person seemed to be out. "Where is everyone papa?" His son, Satoshi asked.

Hanzo didn't like this one bit. Suddenly, a dark blue clothed ninja with a hood and mask that covered his face appeared with a katana and attacked them. But Hanzo let go of his son and fended the attacker off. Even though he possessed no bending skills, he managed to beat the ninja and kill him with his own blade. But more and more ninjas came out of the shadows as hanzo fought them off and protected his son. Once he killed them, Hanzo quickly picked up his son and ran as fast as he could to his home.

Hanzo and his son made it to their home before more ninjas could see them. "Harumi?" Hanzo kept asking quietly as he and Satoshi looked through the house. Harumi was Hanzo's wife and Satoshi's mother. However, Satoshi found his mother dead in the back gardens. She laid in a pool of her own blood, holding onto a kunai knife. Hanzo discovers his wife's body as he and Satoshi had tears fall down their faces. Unfortunately, there was no time to mourn. The ninjas had found them and charged towards the two. "Satoshi, hide!" Hanzo ordered his son.

Satoshi ran to hide as Hanzo grabbed the knife from his wife's hand and began to use it as a weapon. He was fueled by his rage as Hanzo brutally killed them. However, the fight was not over. "Enough!" A mysterious, emotionless voice said. Another blue masked ninja stepped out of the shadows holding Satoshi by the neck.

"Satoshi!" Hanzo yelled as he appeared.

He stepped forward, but frost started to form around his son's neck. "Come further and he dies." The ninja warned Hanzo.

He stopped in his tracks and dropped the knife on the ground. "What do you want?" The ninja suddenly conjured ice from his hand, as it froze hanzo where he stood. He had never seen bending like this. To create ice out of nothing and no water. Was it even bending?

"Papa-" Satoshi yelled as a spike of ice penetrated through his jugular, killing him. The ninja dropped his body on the ground as Hanzo witnessed.

"Satoshi!" Hanzo yelled in agony. He tried to break free from the ice, but wasn't strong enough. "I'll kill you… I'll kill you!" He shouted with pure rage.

The ninja approached Hanzo and created another spike made of ice. "You first…" he said as he stabbed Hanzo in the mouth. The spike penetrated through his skull, killing Hanzo where he stood.
