Just a series of five drabbles revolving around Buck's first name, with Buddie in the final drabble. Enjoy.

1. His parents named him Evan the day he was born. There was no significant meaning, no deep emotional ties to the name as there had been with their first two children. He was a healthy, eight pound bundle of energy and righteous indignation at being thrust into the strange new world.

His parents saw something different in him when they first held the squirming little boy. They saw hope and potential, the chance to save their older son from the disease ravaging his body.

Evan should have been their miracle.

2. In middle school, Evan learned to fight. He was teased mercilessly for his brashness, his looks, and his name. He had enough one day when a particular loudmouth by the name of James slapped the back of his head as he walked by. Fed up, he stood up, strolled over to the laughing bully, and punched him square in the nose. Everyone was shocked, and when he came back from his three day suspension, he told everyone to call him Buck.

3. When he became a firefighter, Buck worried constantly for his sister. Before, she had been taking care of him. Or as much as she could with Doug breathing down her neck. Their parents barely acknowledged his existence anymore, for reasons he still didn't fully understand.

Restless and floating through life, he found meaning in the academy and then being a firefighter. Everyone knew him as Buck, a bullheaded but capable man, willing to do anything for his family.

He just couldn't get through to his sister, the person who mattered most to him.

4. When his sister moved to Los Angeles, Buck felt his life shift again for the better. Maddie was finally safe and out of the reach of her malicious ex, and he could protect her. He never minded when she called him Evan; it was nice, in fact. Almost like a special code name between them.

Maddie was his best friend, and he would always be Evan to her.

5. "Evan…"

Eddie shifted against him, his skin hot even in the cool spring air. Buck grasped at the sheets, biting down on his lower lip. Eddie stole the air from his lungs without even trying, every damn time. This man had somehow wormed his way into Buck's heart, splintering his defenses and finding a new side of him that he had never even known was there.

Now there were two people in his life who called him Evan, and for the first time he truly didn't mind.
