We've all read time travel stories where Harry is the one travelling back in time, but what about if we send someone else back? Say, for example, our favorite (or at least my favorite) quirky blonde Ravenclaw? Yeah that's what this story is. I don't own HP, if I did, I'd be a much richer woman (that much richer woman is JK Rowling). So let's just get into the story, shall we?
Chapter 1: A Losing Battle
Luna was in disbelief. Harry Potter was dead. Killed by Voldemort without so much as raising his wand. One of the first and best friends she ever had, dead at the feet of a madman. Everything was falling apart.
Where did we go wrong?
As she stared at his body in shock, all hell suddenly broke loose, curses flying through the air. Thinking quickly, she raised her wand and started firing curses back, but it was a fruitless endeavor. The Hogwarts defenders were fighting a losing battle. Luna fought as best she could, but there was nothing she could do to help. She turned just in time to see three bright green curses flying towards her.
Nowhere to hide.
Nowhere to run.
The curses struck true.
Luna Lovegood was dead.
She opened her eyes to see pure white nothingness all around her.
Was this the afterlife?
"Not quite my little moon, not quite."
Luna looked up to see the one person she had wanted to see since she was nine years old. Her mother.
Luna couldn't help it, she started crying.
"Mum!"
There was so much she wanted to say, so much she needed to say, but she couldn't. She couldn't say anything, everything she had been experiencing since the end of her fifth year came crashing down on her, the tortue she underwent at Hogwarts, being held captive by the Malfoys, learning of her father's betrayal of Harry, and more than anything that horrible image of Harry's body at the feet of Voldemort.
"It's alright Luna, it's over now."
She looked up, all her anguish, fear, and grief turning to anger in that moment.
"It shouldn't be! He shouldn't have died! None of this should have happened!"
"I know Luna, that's why I'm here. To give you a second chance."
Confusion and curiosity now dominated her anger.
"A second chance? What's that supposed to mean?"
"If you had a chance to go back to the past and change things, would you?"
"Back to the past? Are you talking about time travel?"
"Yes little moon, I'm talking about time travel. Now you have a choice to make."
"A choice?"
"The same choice Harry Potter had. Stay here, enjoy a nice afterlife with your family and friends, or go back and stop this war before it starts."
"Harry chose to stay? Why?"
"He had nothing to live for. He was raised his whole life to be expendable. A weapon, instead of a person. He had no family, he had no one to go back to. So he chose to stay."
There was no hesitation in Luna's voice. "I'll go back."
Her mother smiled. "I knew you would. You'll be in your third year, a few days after the selection of champions. Find Harry. Be the friend he always needed. Give him something to live for."
Luna nodded, determination in her heart. She would not let what happened before happen again.
"You must strip Voldemort of his immortality. The Black family elf has the answers you seek."
"You can't tell me yourself?"
"There are some things I am prevented by divine law to share, and this is one of them. I cannot share the destinies of other souls."
"Any more advice before I go?"
"Nothing you can't figure out yourself."
"I love you Mum."
"I love you too little moon. No matter where I am, I will always love you."
The next thing Luna saw was blackness.
Luna opened her eyes to a familiar sight, the Ravenclaw dorms. She climbed out of bed and almost fell over. She soon realized the reason for this. Time travel. She was thirteen again. She was short.
Walking to the Great Hall, she thought about what her mother told her. Harry was raised to be a weapon, not a person. How could that happen to The-Boy-Who-Lived? The answer hit her like the Hogwarts Express. The person most interested in Harry Potter since his arrival at Hogwarts.
Dumbledore.
She couldn't trust him if that was the case. She would have to figure this out on her own.
Entering the Great Hall brought back memories of events that happened a few hours ago but nearly four years in the future. Her breathing started to get shallow, but she forced herself to remain calm. Everything was riding on her. Now was not the time to break down. She needed to focus. Focus on her mission.
Looking at the Gryffindor table, she spotted Harry. He was sitting at the end of the table, no one near him save Hermione who appeared too busy working on her crusade to free house elves to support Harry in a meaningful way. She remembered, albeit vaguely, seeing them in the library researching in the lonely nights that she had been searching the halls for her belongings.
Her fist clenched thinking of the abuse she experienced from her housemates. That would soon stop. The other Ravenclaws would soon discover they were dealing with a far different Luna Lovegood than before. But first she needed to connect with Harry. She had to give him hope. So naturally, she took the obvious solution. She sat across from him at the Gryffindor table and got herself a plate of breakfast. Harry looked up at her in shock.
"Wh-who are you? Why are you sitting with me instead of the rest of the Ravenclaws? You all think I'm a cheat, remember?"
"My name is Luna. Luna Lovegood. I'm sitting with you because I don't agree with the rubbish the rest of the school is spouting about you being a cheat." She paused. She couldn't very well tell him that she knows he would never cheat to get more fame. This was supposed to be the first time they'd met after all. Professor McGonagall interrupted before she could continue, however.
"Miss Lovegood, why are you sitting at the Gryffindor table instead of your own house's table?" Luna looked at her with a slightly unfocused expression.
"Well Professor, I thought I would share a breakfast with my friend Harry before the Nargles could do too much damage. They seem to be all over the Gryffindor table, and they're being quite nasty to Harry today."
"All the same, you need to sit with your house Miss Lovegood."
"I'd really prefer to sit with Harry this morning, Professor. I don't believe there are any rules against this outside of special feasts." McGonagall's eyes softened the tiniest amount, but Luna noticed. It confirmed her suspicions that McGonagall truly cared for Harry, but something held her back from helping him more.
"Oh very well Miss Lovegood, you may sit with Mr. Potter during regular mealtimes if that is what you wish." Luna smiled at the usually stern professor.
"Thank you Professor." Harry tapped the table in front of her, bringing her attention back to him.
"Luna, you didn't finish telling me why you're sitting with me. The whole school believes I'm a cheat, why don't you?"
"You've never liked your fame Harry, I've seen it at every Halloween feast. More than that I know what it's like to have the people who are supposed to stand by you no matter what turn against you. Most of Ravenclaw avoids me, they all think I am quite strange. And now they all think that you are a cheat." He frowned and nodded. "Perhaps we can prove them wrong about both of us, together." She gave him a soft smile, which he returned.
"Thank you Luna. You and Hermione are the only ones who believe me, even Ron thought I cheated my way into this thing."
She smiled, but inside she was burning with anger. She could see what was happening. Harry was becoming more and more isolated from his friends, and she knew that at the end of this Tournament Voldemort would be returned to life.
"Harry," she said with complete sincerity, "I promise you, that no matter what happens in this Tournament, I will always be your friend." The smile Harry gave her cemented in her mind that her decision to come back was the right one.
Thank you for reading! Updates to both my stories will come as I write them.
