Well this turned out differently than I thought it would but lol such is writing. "Far from Heaven" by Evanescence just reminds me of Yato so much so I just used a little bit of inspiration from that to write this.
What if I can't see your light anymore?
'cause I've spent too long in the dark
and I'm on my knees
without shame begging to believe but I feel
so far from heaven
"Yato! Yato! Get up, he's coming!"
Kazuma's voice was desperate but it was quickly fading into a mutter. His body was so heavy and the urge to just close his eyes was so strong.
How did he get here? All he ever wanted was to spend time with Yukine and Hiyori.
Yukine, the boy who had been through hell in his human life. The boy who he desperately wanted to give a second chance. The one who had given him a second chance. His beloved hafuri and guidepost.
And Hiyori. The human girl who would give her life for a god's without a second thought. His believer. His friend. The person he'd fallen in love with.
But the world seemed to make it clear time and time again that his wants were foolish. He couldn't protect them no matter how hard he tried, and it was his fault for getting them wrapped up with his father. It was what he deserved, he thought, as a god of calamity. It wouldn't be fair to grant happiness to someone who had destroyed towns and villages for decades even if there were a few pure souls like Yukine and Hiyori willing to forgive and embrace him.
"Kazu." Yato choked out, Kazuma appearing in a bright light next to him.
"What are you doing?" The brunette pulled at Yato's arms, trying to lift him up.
He shook his head, "No, Kazuma… Just go. Go home, to Bishamon."
Kazuma stared blankly before he gripped Yato's jersey into fists and pushed him roughly into the ground, growling, "How could you say that!? We're not done here!"
"I've messed everything up. I don't think there's any undoing all the pain I've caused Yukine. At this point I don't know if even he's going to make it. And Hiyori… she's better off without someone like me."
Reincarnation had been a plan, but if Yukine wasn't going to be around to be his shinki, was that even worth it?
"The reason they get angry with you is because you try to make decisions for them, just like you're doing with me right now!" Kazuma huffed, leaning over so that he spoke directly into his face.
Though Yato's expression softened, he asked, "What happened to wanting me to die?"
"I want the sorcerer to die." Kazuma relaxed his grasp on Yato's jacket, "And if we both happened to die in that vein, that was fine. But this? Giving up? I won't accept that!" A few stray ayakashi gathered near the two and he quickly sent borderlines crashing in their directions, "So get up!"
"Kazuma-san! Yato!" Hiyori's voice called out loudly, echoing through the cold winter air.
Giving a loud sigh of relief, Kazuma turned his head, "Iki-san, perfect timing—wait. Is that Nora?" He immediately moved into a defensive stance.
"Yes, she brought me here. She's been through just as much as we have due to Yato's father, I promise, she's on our side." Hiyori ran closer to them, questioning, "Is Yato okay?"
"I… I'm okay." He answered quietly, his eyes watering.
It was somewhat a lie. His entire body ached and now his throat was tight, burying the urge not to openly sob at the sound of her voice.
Without another word, she fell onto him and clung to his waist and shoulder. "You're so stupid, do you know that?" She cried loudly, ignoring the blood from his tracksuit that was surely soaking into her own clothes.
"I know." He nodded, his forehead touching hers as he closed his eyes, "I'm sorry."
"Hiyori, you really need to get out of the way. And Yato, you need to call for Kazuma." Nora quickly pointed out, interrupting the moment as she pointed to the silhouette that clearly belonged to their father.
Meeting her eyes, he gave a small smile and promised, "I'll make this right—somehow." He bent upward before jumping up, "Rekki!" Kazuma disappeared into a flash before reappearing in the form of Yato's outfit and sword. Turning to Nora, he gave her pleading eyes, "I'm trusting you, so please… keep Hiyori safe."
Nora seemed to roll her eyes, but nodded.
"Kazuma, let's go." Yato let out a breath of air, moving forward.
"Right."
