LOVE FROM RIVALRY

Chapter 1

Author's Note: Hi, this is MeliKun313 speaking. This is my first Haruhi Suzumiya fanfic. This particular story centers around a non-canon character named Mitsuki as well as the canon character Itsuki Koizumi. Mitsuki is an OC I created a while back (or a fan-character, whichever you prefer). Please read and review if it suits your fancy! Rated T for some violence later on in the story. Enjoy!

Mitsuki awoke to a jarring sound. She covered her ears and tried to shut it out and fall back asleep. However, the sound kept going…and going…and going. The longer the brunette tried to fall back into slumber, the louder the sound seemed to get.

"Mitsuki?" a boy's voice said.

"No." Mitsuki retorted, half asleep.

"Mitsuki, turn it off!"

"I'll do it later!"

"Gah…!"

Suddenly, the sound stopped. Mitsuki slowly sat up, stretched her arms up, and yawned. She looked around her room and saw her older twin brother, Arashi, standing beside her bed.

"God, you're hopeless," Arashi lectured, pointing a spatula at her. "You'd better get up and start getting ready or we'll be late to our new school! Your uniform's hanging on your doorknob and breakfast will be ready in five."

Mitsuki nodded as her brother stormed out of the bedroom. She rolled out of her bed and crawled over to her door. She stood up and looked over the clothing. It was a blue and white sailor-style top with a blue skirt. The brunette put on her uniform in front of a mirror and smiled. She and Arashi were finally going to start living a normal high school life.

After eating some breakfast onigiri (which was all they could afford) and packing their bento lunches, the two teens started for North High. It was a short walk to the nearest train station, three stops, and a trudge up a long hill. Neither sibling spoke as they went. Both of them were filled with their own thoughts of the coming day. Which class would they be in? Would they be separated? Would they even meet someone with their abilities?

It was anyone's guess.

As the two teens approached the front gate, they saw two girls in bunny outfits handing out fliers. In her opinion, they looked like—

"Playboy bunnies," Arashi spoke.

"Huh?" Mitsuki stopped and stared.

"There's gotta be a Playboy Club at this high school. But why? In any case, who cares? I'm as straight as a circle anyway." Arashi answered.

Mitsuki watched as her older brother continued walking to the front doors of the school. She half-grinned and sauntered over to where the 'Playboy Bunnies' were eagerly handing out their fliers. One girl, a brunette like herself, was grabbing people by the shoulders. Uh…huh… The other girl, a red-head, seemed a bit shier and more unsure of herself.

The new teen decided on the red-head and waltzed up to her and smiled.

"Uh…um…w-we're f-from the S.O.S. B-B-Brigade…" the red-head stammered, blushing.

"The S.O.S. Brigade? What's that?" Mitsuki responded, taking a flier.

The girl turned as red as a tomato and took a few steps back. Mitsuki cocked her head to one side. Did the red-head even know what the club was?

"J-just c-come to the Literature Club room a-after school!" the red-head squeaked. She then darted over to where her companion was still grabbing people and shoving fliers into their hands.

Mitsuki had to raise an eyebrow. However, she shrugged and jogged over to the front doors and stepped inside. After putting school shoes on and struggling to find the tenth-grade wing, she finally made it next to her brother, exasperated.

"It's about time." Arashi commented, rather deadpan. He was staring off into space.

"Yeah…well…what about it?" Mitsuki panted, casting a sideways glance.

"We're in different classes, just so ya know."

What? How?!

"The teacher in class one-five told me when I asked. He told me that you're in class one-nine."

"Yeah, and where's that?" Mitsuki inquired crossly.

"Four doors down to the left," Arashi answered, looking at her. "Be careful. I hear there's another transfer student, and it's a guy."

"Yeah, yeah. See ya later, bro."

The brunette ran through the ever-growing crowd of students and stopped at the door of her new classroom. There, as Arashi said he would be, was a tenth-grade boy. He had auburn hair with bangs parted to one side, light brown eyes, and wore the North High blazer. The fellow teen gave Mitsuki a small smile and gestured for her to stand beside him. Mitsuki nodded and went over to him, albeit blushing.

"My name's Itsuki Koizumi," the boy greeted. "How about you?"

"My name is M-Mitsuki Takiya," Mitsuki replied.

"Wow, I didn't expect us to have such similar first names," Koizumi chuckled. "Your name does have a pretty ring to it, though."

Mitsuki blushed even more. This guy was cute.

"W-well, I'd better head into the classroom. D-don't wanna be late!" the brunette stumbled over her words.

"Wait," Koizumi said. "We've gotta stay out here until everyone's in. We need to introduce ourselves before taking our seats."

Mitsuki hesitated, then nodded. She stood awkwardly by Koizumi as the students of one-nine made their way into the classroom. The two transfer teens got strange looks from their new classmates. Some of them were even whispering as they went in.

D-do my classmates think K-Koizumi and I a-are…dating?

Shortly after the last student filed in, the final bell rang and the teacher started speaking. Mitsuki wasn't particularly listening. Rather, she was more nervous than anything. Here she was, separated from her brother for the first time since…ever, and this strange, nonchalant guy was talking to her! At the very least, she hoped that none of her classmates (especially this Koizumi guy) knew that she was actually from—

"Takiya," Koizumi whispered, tapping her on the shoulder.

"Y-yes?" the brunette responded softly.

"It's our turn to go in."

Mitsuki nodded slowly as Koizumi gestured for her to go in before him. She walked in with her chin up and eyes facing forward. She didn't particularly want to look at her classmates until she introduced herself. However, she still felt her face getting hot.

God, I hope I'm not blushing…

"Class, these two are our new transfer students. Please make them feel welcome." the teacher said. He then moved his hand out like he wanted the brunette to say something.

"M-my name is Mitsuki Takiya," Mitsuki said, facing the class. "Pleased to meet all of you. I hope we have a great year together." She bowed and stepped back for Koizumi, who stepped forward.

"My name is Itsuki Koizumi," Koizumi said gracefully. "I'm from the Tokyo area. Let's all have a great year together." He bowed but stayed in place.

The teacher pointed the two students over to a couple of empty seats towards the back of the classroom. Koizumi opted to sit behind the brunette, which made her face grow hot. However, once class got going, she became focused. Her mind occasionally drifted to how Arashi's class was going and the flier she had received from the shy red-head. Mitsuki couldn't deny that she was curious about the S.O.S. Brigade. What did they do, anyway?

"Miss Takiya, the lunch bell just rang." Koizumi whispered suddenly.

"O-oh…right!" Mitsuki replied. She got her bento lunch out of her seat. However, she barely had any time to open it before her classmates gathered around. The boys gathered around Koizumi and the girls around her.

"So, Miss Takiya," one of the girls asked. "Where are you from?"

"Uh…Hokkaido?" Mitsuki responded shyly.

"What brought you down to North High?" another girl inquired.

"The uniform…?"

"I hear you have a twin brother! Is he hot?!"

The questions just kept coming before Mitsuki had a chance to answer. She felt her blood rising to her face. The brunette doubted that Koizumi was having much more luck than her. However, before any more students could ask a question, the classroom door flew open.

Mitsuki looked up to see Arashi storming towards her desk with bento lunch in hand. Arashi pushed his way through the crowd of female students and slammed his bento box on Mitsuki's desk. At the very least, that gesture got the rambling, questioning students to shut up.

"Listen up, ladies. You stay away from my sister, or else." Arashi ordered.

The female students slowly nodded, some of them blushing, and dispersed. Arashi grabbed the chair nearest to him and sat down next to his sister. The two started eating and discussing how their days were panning out so far as well as the classes they had in the morning. Apparently, Arashi had met a fellow brunette whom was slightly on the insane side. She had a sidekick, also with brown hair, who appeared to go along with everything she said.

"So, what's this crazy girl's name?" Mitsuki inquired, slightly curious.

"Her name's Haruhi Suzumiya," Arashi replied. "She's the leader of this S.O.S. Brigade thing."

Mitsuki thought back to the flier the red-head had handed her. Before she had a chance to show her brother, however, another chair slid up next to them.

"Mind if I join you two?" Koizumi asked, sitting down. "I don't really know anyone else in this class yet."

"What choice do we have…?" Mitsuki heard Arashi grumble.

Oh, that's right!

The brunette introduced Koizumi to her brother, to which the raven-haired teen mumbled his name back. The two boys bantered back and forth once Koizumi mentioned that he was seriously considering joining the S.O.S. Brigade. He asked what club Arashi was thinking of joining. Arashi replied, with his mouth full, something along the lines of 'what's it to you?' Mitsuki had to giggle watching the two boys in front of her. Her brother had always been overprotective of her ever since they were little. He had grumpy streaks every now and then, though, especially when change happened. This so happened to be one of those times.

"So, Arashi, what brought you two here to North High, exactly?" Koizumi inquired.

"Well, Koizumi, what gave you the right to call me by my first name?" Arashi retorted, finishing his lunch.

"My apologies, I must be forgetting things." the auburn-haired boy shrugged with a smile.

"Hey, if you call my brother Arashi, then you can call me Mitsuki!" the brunette exclaimed.

She felt Arashi's incredulous and narrowed gaze on her, but she didn't care.

Koizumi finished off by saying that the twins could call him Itsuki. Arashi appeared like he was going to pull his hair out and stormed off as the warning bell rang. The two remaining transfer students smiled cordially at each other and prepared for their afternoon. Classes went by smoothly with the occasional lecture from the teacher about daydreaming in class. Mitsuki, despite the teacher's speeches, stared out the window, eagerly awaiting club time after school.

Before anyone knew it, the final bell had rung. As the brunette was putting away her things, the classroom door slammed open and in stepped another confident brunette. Like Mitsuki, she had shoulder length-brown hair. However, she wore a yellow ribbon in her hair and seemed to be in search of something, or someone.

"You, mysterious transfer student, come with me!" the other brunette ordered.

Before Mitsuki could even point at herself, the girl had dragged Itsuki out of the room and dashed down the hall with him. The class one-nine brunette heaved a sigh. There was nothing that mysterious about her. However, something in her gut told her to chase after them and find out where they were going. The other brown-haired teen had to be Haruhi Suzumiya, based on her brother's description. Mitsuki briskly finished shoving her homework in her bag and made a mad dash in just that direction.

She was panting by the time she reached the old wing of the school. As she searched around, she noticed that all of the rooms were dedicated to clubs. The challenge would be to find out which one belonged to the S.O.S. Brigade. As she recalled, it was the Literature Club room.

The brunette didn't have to search long, however. She quickly found the place in question. In the doorway stood the girl who was most likely Miss Suzumiya. With her stood Itsuki. As the two went inside, Mitsuki briskly walked to the door and stuck her foot in the walkway as the door closed. This brought a reaction from the supposed club leader.

"And just who are you?" asked Miss Suzumiya. She peered through the gap, seemingly curious and annoyed at the same time.

"Um…uh… I was just wondering what the S.O.S. Brigade was all about," Mitsuki responded, determined to make eye contact. "I…would like to join your club!"

"You would, huh?"

The shier brunette nodded.

"Well, you've come to the right place!" Miss Suzumiya's mood shifted abruptly. She let Mitsuki in and was bouncing off the walls with excitement. As Mitsuki slowly walked to the center table, she could feel the rest of the club's eyes on her. Some were questioning, some were shocked, and some…well…seemed indifferent.

In any case, none of that bothered the blue-eyed brunette. She smiled and set her bookbag on the table. She was finally at the headquarters of the S.O.S. Brigade.

Hey, it's me again! Hope you enjoyed the first chapter. I'll hopefully be uploading Chapter 2 very soon since I have quite a bit of down time right now. Be seeing you then! :3
