The sun was just coming up as Shelby was driving into the windy city of Chicago. She took in the city skyline. The tall buildings becoming brighter as the sun rose higher into the sky. It had been 10 years since she first stepped foot in the city of Chicago.
She was back to work. Back to work as a firefighter in a city she truly loved and wanted to get back too. She wasn't sure of who she would run into or if she would even see any of her old friends.
She knew Angie, Andy, and Hallie were all gone. Scott had reached out to her when Angie became sick. Shelby made a trip to Chicago to see one of her best friends again before she passed.
Angie and her lost contact after Shelby's parents forced her to move. Then one day Angie stumbled upon Shelby's social media page and she reached out. The two friends instantly clicked again. They had kept in contact once they started talking again.
Shelby followed the GPS in her car to her new apartment. She pulled into the parking garage that was under her building. She parked and made her way to the elevator to go upstairs.
She exited the elevator once she reached her floor. She went and unlocked her apartment and stepped inside. It was pretty much empty. Her furniture wouldn't be here till tomorrow.
Shelby walked over to the giant window that was in her living room. She looked out over the city as it was coming to life and people were beginning their work day.
"Fresh start. This is what I needed." Shelby had lost both of her parents within the last year. Her dad passed due to lung cancer. More than likely caused by the job. Her mother had begged her to not continue her firefighter career after her dad passed. Her mom passed from a heart attack 6 months after her dad.
Shelby went back down to her car to grab the few items she had and carried them upstairs. She set up the air mattress she had to be able to sleep that night. She than ran a few errands around the city.
By the time she got home it was time for bed. She curled up under the blankets on the air mattress and went to sleep. Hoping she picked the right city to try and start the next chapter of her life.
2 Days Later
Shelby had spent the previous day unpacking and getting her apartment set up the way she wanted. Today was her first day working for the the CFD.
She had accepted the lieutenant position on squad 6. From what she had been told the whole team had been in a gas leak accident. One that killed two firefighters, injured the other 2, and the last one was transferred.
She made her way into her new firehouse. It was eerily quiet. But that was to be expected considering what had happened. She headed for Chief Walkers office and knocked on the door.
Shelby heard someone yell for her to come in. She opened the door and Chief Walker was sitting at his desk. Shelby closed the door behind her and walked up to the Chiefs desk.
"Chief Walker. I am Lieutenant Shelby Jensen. Here to work on squad 6."
Walker stood up and shook her hand. "Welcome Lieutenant Jensen. Glad to have you."
"Thank you for this opportunity. I am glad to be here."
Chief Walkers expression softened. "Your father would be so proud of you." Chief Walker gave her a warm smile.
Shelby relaxed a little bit. "Thank You Chief." She returned his smile.
"I'll meet you in the briefing room in 10 minutes. Get you introduced to your squad."
"Thank you Chief."
"Dismissed."
Shelby headed out of the Chiefs office and found the briefing room. She took a seat and waited for everyone else to join. Slowly the rest of firehouse made their way into the briefing room.
Chief walker soon joined the group and stood at the front of the room. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen."
Resounding morning came from the room.
"So our new lieutenant for squad 6 has arrived this morning. She comes from a family of firefighters and served as a squad lieutenant in Kansas City." Walker pointed to her. "Please give a warm welcome to Shelby Jensen"
Everyone said hello and seemed happy she was there.
"Squad 6 please hang back the rest of you are dismissed." The rest of the group got up and left. Leaving about 4 guys in the room. Shelby wasn't surprised. Not to many women were on squad.
"Jensen these are your men. We have Mason Slater, Sean Elliott, Daniel Hackett, and Tyler Anderson" Shelby shook each of their hands.
"Pleasure to meet all of you. Excited to see what you can do."
Anderson stepped forward. "Likewise. I'm the driver of squad 6."
"So who wants to show me the rig? I want to get familiar with with where everything is located."
Squad 6 person in distress. Downtown Chicago
Shelby followed her crew out of the briefing room and over to the rig. They suited up and jumped in. Anderson flipped on the lights and sped off towards downtown.
Anderson pulled up to the address. Shelby jumped out and looked up to see someone hanged off a balcony.
"Slater Elliott grab the climbing gear! Lets get up there quick."
Ambulance 61 pulled up on scene. A women with short blonde hair jumped out of the passenger seat and ran over to Shelby. "Where do you need us?"
"Grab your jump bag and follow me up."
Everyone ran into the building and got on the elevator to head up to the 7 floor. They entered the apartment where the victim was.
"Elliott find something to tie me off on." Shelby removed her turnout coat and got her harness on.
"Hurry please! I'm slipping."
"We are coming! Hold on."
"Jensen there's nothing to tie off on."
Shelby scanned the room looking for something to tie off on. When she found nothing she looked too her men. "Think you two can hold me?"
Elliott and Slate exchanged a look and then nodded. The guys got situated waited. Once everything was set Shelby walked out onto the balcony.
"Hey there. My names Shelby. What's yours?" Shelby began to get a rope around the victim.
"Josh."
"Alright Josh I'm gonna get you out of here but you gotta trust me." Josh nodded his head. Shelby got him secured just as the balcony gave out and went crashing down.
Josh was freaking out and screaming.
"Hey Josh I've got you but you need to stop moving!" Josh clung onto Shelby and stopped moving. "Elliott! Slater! can you pull us up now?"
"We are slipping."
Shelby looked around to see what her next move was. Then she figured it out. "Elliott Slater lower us down."
"What?!"
"Just do it!"
Elliott and Slater began lower them down.
"Alright stop! And hold tight." Shelby began to swing and kicking in the window. It finally gave and the two of them tumbled into the apartment below.
"Jensen you good?"
"All good. We are in the apartment below you. Send the paramedics." Shelby laid on the ground catching her breath.
The paramedics, Slater, and Elliott soon joined them in the other apartment. The paramedics attended to Josh.
Slater walks over and held out his hand for Shelby to take. Shelby grabbed hold and Slater pulled her to her feet. "Hell of a first call." The guys patted her on the back and headed down to the rig.
Shelby walked over to Josh. "How's he doing?" The paramedics were getting him loaded onto the stretcher.
"A few cuts and bruises but otherwise he will be fine."
"Great. I'm Shelby Jensen. The new lieutenant on squad 6."
"I'm Sylvie Brett and that's Gabby Dawson PIC on 61."
"Nice to meet both of you."
"Likewise." The women headed out of the apartment and back downstairs. Brett and Dawson got the victim loaded up into 61.
Shelby jumped into squad 6's rig. "Let's go back to the house Anderson."
"You got it Lieutenant."
Anderson headed towards the firehouse and Shelby rested her head against the headrest. So far she was really liking Chicago. And it seemed her new team was going to be an awesome one.
Brett and Dawson were pulling back into 51 after their last call. They hopped out of the rig talking about how awesome it was for squad 6 to have a female lieutenant.
Squad 3 was sitting at their table and Casey was talking to Severide.
"Hey babe." Dawson walked over and gave Casey a hug.
"Severide you should of seen the new lieutenant on squad 6. She is a badass."
Severide raised an eyebrow. "She?" As far Severide knew there was no female who was squad and lieutenant certified in the CFD.
"Yeah Dawson what was her name?"Sylvie looked at her partner.
"Jensen I believe. It was such a quick introduction I honestly not sure if I heard that right."
Severide and Casey both exchanged a look. The girls excused themselves and headed into the house for some lunch.
"Casey you don't think?"
"Come on Kelly that's a fairly common last name. I doubt Shelby would ever come back here. Not after all this time."
"Yeah your probably right."
Truck 81 Ambulance 61 Car accident.
Brett and Dawson came running out and jumped into 61. Casey and his men hopped on 81 and headed out.
Severide tried to shake off the name Dawson had said. Casey was probably right. There is no way she would come back here. Severide went back to reading the paper.
