Hailey's POV
"Erin wait your gun!" I yell. She keeps striding toward the interrogation room without as much as backward glance.
This was not how I wanted my first week in intelligence to turn out. I'm about to run after her when I spot the superintendent of police walking up the stairs.
"Good morning Chief, how are you?"
"Better now that this case is about to be solved. I heard we had a suspect in custody."
"Yeah, why don't I tell you what we got over a cup of coffee?" I head toward the break room without leaving him the chance to respond.
As he walks behind me I hear him say "Actually, I would rather see the suspect if you don't mind"
I pause "I figured that was you came all the way down here. But I know that you have that big press conference at 3. Don't you want me to at least debrief you?" I ask as I cock my eyebrow at him. I knew that appealing to his political career would convince him to give me a few minutes of his time. I mean that's what matters to him on the long run.
"Of course, your absolutely right. Why don't you debrief me?"
I took two mugs from the shelves and gesture to him to sit down. I started making small talks, asking him how he took his coffee and how the campaign was going. He answered politely, but clearly over the whole charade. As soon as I notice his relentless stance I start talking about the case from the beginning to this point.
I keep glancing discreetly toward the door waiting for Erin to come back out. Finally, as I run out of things to say we head toward the interrogation room. I've done what I could, now it was up to Erin.
I release a deep breath as I notice her head out of the room, her gun in her holster.
"Detective Lindsay, I didn't know you were here!" He raises a questioning eyebrow towards me.
"Yeah, it was just a follow up interview, didn't think it was worth mentioning" I say as I look him straight in the eyes. I know I look calm on the outside, hell I had years of practice, but I'm seething on the inside.
He turns toward Erin his eyes settling on the gun on her hip. "I thought that protocol dictates no gun in the interrogation room?"
"I know, I apologize Sir. I was distracted, it won't happen again." Her raspy voice barely containing her anger. "By the way, we have a location on the kid, I already contacted Voight, the team is headed it's way."
You could see the wheals spinning in his head as he nods and finally say to keep me posted on the kid.
He starts leaving the same way that he came. Halfway through the stairs he turns around and says "Just because you're in Hank Voights unit doesn't mean you're untouchable. Should I ever hear or see you go in to an interrogation room with your weapon I'll have your badge. Am I clear?" His eyes are trained on Erins as she replied.
"Yes Sir, it won't happen again."
I wait until I was sure we wouldn't be overheard.
"What the hell is the matter with you? What did you do to the guy?" I ask her my anger now clear as day.
"Listen Hailey, sometimes it's just better not to ask questions."
"Is that what they teach you in this unit? That it's okay to break the rules whenever you want? That they'll be no consequence?" I ask in disbelief over her casual dimissmal of what just happened.
"Of course not, but a kid is missing, he's scared and alone and I'm a cop, I took an oath the protect and serve this city and that's what I did." She takes a defensive pose as she looks at me. "The superintendent overlooked it. Why can't you?"
"I get that, and I want to get him back as much as you do, but you almost cost us our badge. And believe it or not I believe in the system because at the end of the day it works. So the next time you pull a stunt like that again you're on your own."
"I can see that."
And just like that she walked away. Not even an hour later we heard that the kid didn't make it.
Like I said it was a hell of a first week.
