Well my dark story is getting a second chapter, so I'm writing this as something light to pass in the meantime. I'm choosing something 1/362 because the other story is dark with them so making it up with this. I also deleted five old stories that I'm really not proud of (there's more but some has to stay lol) and I'm making up for that!
Happy reading!
Rachel felt her head spin a little before turning back to Nigel still next to her bed. It felt good to be back in office as her smile never left her face. She pushed back the feelings of guilt of what she did before centering herself. Everything was back to normal and she could put that game of tag behind her. She turned back to her bed to gather anything that might have been left there, which wasn't much seeing as she was wearing her favorite purple robe and orange rainbow monkey slippers.
"Great job Rachel," said Nigel as he clapped for her. "If you want, I can take you back to your treehouse."
That felt good to hear. Her treehouse. The moonbase was hers that she was in control of and happily nodded. Only a long time ago, sector W when she first moved to the area. Before that it was her sector in Toronto (her parents moved to the US just before their divorce).
"That'd be great Nigel, thanks. I guess I'll have to thank whoever watched the base for me while I was out and get caught up," she said fishing for her clothes.
Someone had grabbed a pair of jeans and a purple shirt with teal butterflies on it from her bedroom. Huh, normally she'd have her jumpsuit and sweater, but she guessed that they were waiting for her moonbase.
He was quiet for a minute as he just smiled at her. She felt her heart warm up a little at the small affection. He really helped her out when she was feeling terrible. Plus he stayed with her while she was out. Not many operatives would do that for her seeing as she wasn't very close to many of them due to her job. Nigel was one of her few friends in the KND.
The butterflies in her stomach made her nearly blush at how close they stood next to each other. Did she have a crush on him? Could she decide that? After all, he was the one to stay with her and they did go on that mission against Father together. Sure he was really nice to her and he had a girlfriend, but... Maybe she had one after all and it was just small.
"Of course, Rachel. I'll give you a minute to get ready."
He gave a signal to 86 to get everyone to leave. Rachel could hear the crowd of kids leaving and chattering among themselves from the locker room. After she ran a brush through her blond hair and smiled at herself in the mirror. She looked like a normal kid.
After returning to Nigel, they made their way up to moonbase. Everyone was stopping her, voicing how happy they were to have her back. The kids who played whizbee on the bridge now on the whizbee deck. Numbuh 42 seemed to have learned how to tie his shoes. Minus the chatter among themselves it was peaceful for once.
"So who was in charge while I was out?" she asked, not used to not being bombarded by everyone.
"The diplomats were helping with any fights that happened," he said as she waved to said diplomats as she passed by them. "Numbuhs 86 and 60 switched off on watching the base. Then I helped sign off on the paperwork. We were all acting supreme leaders."
Okay she was going to have to hug the diplomats, Fanny, Patton, and Nigel. Before she could even hug him while she was still standing there, they rounded into her office.
"It's great to have you back sir," said Herbie opening the door for her.
"At ease Herbie," she said. "I hope you went easy on everyone while I was gone. No more demanding signatures saying they were due seconds ago before I even get the paperwork."
He blushed and nodded as they went into her office. Someone had cleaned it and a meatball sandwich hot and ready for her.
"Did you do this?" she asked looking at Herbie who was here before she was.
"Well, numbuh 1 had the idea, we just listened to him," said Herbie dismissing himself as his phone went off and turned back to his desk something printing from his printer.
"All in a day's work," said Nigel smoothly. "After all, everyone the KND was nice to me after I lost my hair. Plus, you were stressed because of us, we had to do something nice for you."
For a second, she looked puzzled trying to remember what they did for him. Then she remembered that there was a cake for him once he got to moonbase, Abby gave him his now iconic sunglasses, and the hairstylists trying to find a cure for him. She remembered even giving him a plate of cookies.
"I remember that, we still never figured out why the Delightful Children did that to you, did we?"
"No," said Nigel briefly as she could see the sadness in his blue eyes. "All we know is what caused it."
"Anyway," said Rachel changing the subject. "This is all really nice of you guys to do this. I really wasn't expecting it. Thanks solider," she said after pulling away. "I don't know what I'd do without you guys."
She had pulled Nigel into a hug and smiled as he hugged back. Next she had to find the others and show them her gratitude. However, she held on to Nigel a little tighter. It was nice to be next to him.
"Your welcome Rachel. If it's any consolation, next time you need a day off just call me," he said nodding at her.
"I'll remember that."
She watched him go as she sat back on her swivel chair and focused on eating her meatball sandwich. Then started digging around for her journal to write in for today. It's been a week after all.
