The reason I wrote this was because I felt so unsatisfied of how they ended the show. I feel like they didn't give enough justice to Haley's character especially since Haley had a lot of potential to improve. So this story will mainly focus on Haley but I will also show the lives of the other family members.

Modern Family: Second Generation - Pilot

It's been 2 years since the family went on their separate ways. The family still stayed in contact to each other. Even through different places and different time zones, the family was still close as ever.

Phil and Claire were on their third trip since they returned home 6 months ago. Surprisingly Claire kept her cool throughout and even truly enjoyed it. Both had no difficulties on their job. If Phil was not working on open houses, he mostly does desk jobs which he was able to do from home. Claire was in a similar situation as well. Her work didn't require her much to physically appear in the office.

Jay, Gloria, and Joe were visiting Columbia every holiday. They're currently in Columbia visiting Gloria's sister's dog's pet groomer's cousin's best friend's son get married. Jay gave up trying to make sense of it years ago.

Cam and Mitchell, along with their children, Lily and Rex were still in Missouri living the life. After a year, they all have adjusted well to the new environment. Cam worked at his dream job. Mitchell got a job at a court. Mitchell got along pretty well with Cam's family. Lily had a bit trouble adjusting to her new school but soon enough she had made some friends.

Alex was still in Switzerland with her now fiancé Arvin. Manny was currently working on Broadway and was living in a condominium near to his work. Luke was still staying at his dorm as he was in his second year in the University of Oregon.

The one only one who was currently in town was Haley. Haley was still living in Cam and Mitchell's previous house, along with her twins, Poppy and George.

Dylan and Haley were currently seeing their lawyer. Dylan and Haley filed for divorce. The two of them had been great at first. They became amazing parents to their children but not much as husband and wife. Realizing how much they've grown up and grown apart from each other and soon finding out that the love they once had was no longer there, the two decided to split up.

After the papers were signed, the two were finally divorced. The two went out of the courtroom and they got into Haley's car and drove to the daycare to pick up the kids like it was a usual day. The split was relatively easy which was weird to say the least as usually these splits were usually messy. But Haley and Dylan still got along as friends and bear no grudges to each other as their feelings were mutual.

Haley and Dylan were pretty well off in a way. The two weren't struggling financially. Dylan was still working as a nurse, to everyone's surprise, and the payoffs were good. Haley returned to her job as a fashion consultant and has published two books which were bestsellers.

The two had both equal custody of their children although Dylan jokingly said they'd do a Parent Trap and take one twin and have them reunite years later. So they did have equal-ish custody of the children though leaning more towards Haley. Not that it mattered, because even though the two divorced… they still lived under one roof.

"Finally we're home!" Haley said as she opened the door to her house. The house was pretty much fully decorated now. And with Haley being the creative one, designed the interior herself. She was quite proud of it, especially the twins' room. There were a few boxes on the ground, but those were most likely Dylan's stuff.

"I'm gonna put the twins in their rooms." Haley said and brought the babies – toddlers but Haley still treats them like her babies and refuses to admit her kids were growing up – to their room. Luckily the twins were asleep so it was easy to put them to bed without the fuss.

Dylan picked up the boxes he forgot to take when he moved, "Hey, I'm gonna head up. I still have a lot of unpacking to do."

"Okay, do you need any help?" Haley asked her ex-husband.

"Nah, I'm good. If you need anything, just call." Dylan replied before taking the boxes out of the house and closing the door.

"Okay." Haley nodded.

Dylan decided to move in to the upstairs of their home that was supposedly for rental. Their divorce was sudden to say the least. Haley and Dylan were too busy with their jobs, raising two kids, and getting a divorce that they forgot about their living conditions. Their place only had two bedrooms, one belonged to the twins. So they immediately thought up a solution and came up with the solution of using the upstairs to be Dylan's place. It was for them… a genius idea. They never have to go through the trouble of taking turns in taking care of the kids if one of them is gone for the day. The two weren't on bad terms so it was fine for them to be in the same place.

Haley poured herself a glass of wine and grabbed a bag of popcorn. She plopped down the sofa and picked a movie to watch. She scrolled down to see her options but couldn't decide so she closed her eyes and held the scroll down button and counted to three as it stopped on a movie. Haley read the title, "Friends with Kids."* Oh the irony— sort of… nevertheless she clicked on 'play' and watched the movie. Halfway through the movie Haley noticed how her situation related more to Ben and Missy's relationship. It wasn't as messy as the characters' were but on some note. The two did love each other but their love just faded as time passed by. Just like how she and Dylan were.

Haley's phone suddenly rang. She realized she had 6 voicemails. All were from different callers. She played them one at a time.

Voicemail 1

Claire: Hey honey, your dad and I will be returning home soon. Alex and Luke are coming home as well. Do you mind if we could have dinner at your place for the reunion. The house must be a complete mess right now, I don't have the time to clean it in time. Thanks honey. Love you… oh and your dad says hello too. He's busy loading the van. Phil I told you to put that at the back first. It's fragile!

Voicemail 2

Alex: I'll be coming home soon. I already told mom and dad. I'll also be bringing Arvin along. Can't wait to see you guys again. Bye!

Voicemail 3

Luke: Hey uhh… I'm guessing mom and dad already told you but in case they didn't…. I'll be home in two days from university… do you mind picking me up? I don't have my license with me now… long story… anyway see you then

Voicemail 4

Jay: Is this thing on?

Gloria: Yes it told you to go after the beep and beep was like 5 seconds ago.

Jay: How was I supposed to know?

Gloria: Nevermind that just say it already, it's been running for 30 seconds now. Ay just give it to me. Hello, Haley! Me, Jay, and Joe will be taking the flight back there tomorrow. Manny is returning home soon as well and I want to host a party for him. Can we do it at your place? Our neighbors are remodeling their house and the noise is very annoying I don't want it to ruin Manny's party.

Voicemail 5

Manny: Haley I need a favor. I'll be returning home soon and knowing mom she'll want a big fiesta and she'll ask you to do it but can you please not go through with it. Just don't. Please. Thanks. Bye.

Voicemail 6

Mitchell: Hi Haley. We just want to let you know that we'll be coming home. Is the upstairs apartment still vacant? We might be staying there for a bit. Call me back as soon as you can.

End of voicemails.

Haley sat there still. She was in shock. She was happy, confused, and so many mixed emotions at once. She took a minute to process what was happening. Not knowing what to do next, she did the only thing can. She drank her whole glass of wine and stood up from the couch, the movie was already forgotten. Haley walked out of the house not before shouting, "Dylan!"

It was going to be one crazy reunion.

For those who don't know the movie, Friends with Kids is a story about two friends who wanted to have kids but haven't met the right one so they made a pact of having a kid together without getting married to each other and staying as friends, so they would still be open to having relationships. But the one I related them two was Ben and Missy who were in a sex-based marriage and ended up in divorce. And with Haley and Dylan being currently divorced were somewhat similar to the main characters, with them staying as friends while raising two kids together and living under the same roof.

I know the scenario is odd and crazy but that's just the kind of thing you get from Modern Family. I just finished watching Modern Family a few months ago and I just missed it so much. I felt like there were still a lot of stories that might have been told. Mostly I'd like to focus on Haley, I just felt like she didn't have that big character development moment. There was so much more she could've done or could have been. I will be telling more stories on the other family members as well of course. I will be focusing more on the second generation. When we first met them when they were kids and now they're adults, I'd like to see how their stories go and how they manage their adult lives.
