Disclaimer: I don't own Kimetsu no Yaiba

On with the one-shot!

While most people wouldn't be able to tell, Kanao was very happy today.

It wasn't something extremely noticeable, her smile was a bit more natural than normal and that was it.

Kanao didn't even realize this gesture herself, anything related to emotions was immediately shoved to a corner of her mind and locked away but, as much as she may try, there are situations in which one can't help but feel.

Her birthday is one of those situations.

She can't put it into words; it was something about the way everyone around her smiled and wished her happiness that made her smile involuntarily.

Even if she doesn't even know when her real birthday is since her parents never told her, let alone have anything remotely resembling a celebration, the first time she heard the word 'birthday' she simply stared in silence, wondering what that is.

It was then that Kanae and Shinobu gave her one, the day they found her and adopted her; ever since, this day had been one of the few times when everyone could see her smiling more naturally.

Then again, those days had became more and more regular thanks to a certain person.

"Ah, Kanao!" She turned towards the voice, seeing a familiar red haired boy waving and smiling at her as he approached.

"Hello, Tanjiro." She greeted, her smile still in place. "How are you?"

"I'm great but never mind that for a moment." He answered before smiling widely, but it suddenly turned into a frown. "I… well…"

"What's wrong?" Kanao asked worriedly, Tanjiro almost never hesitates when talking.

"Hmm… here." He moved a hand to an inside pocket of his haori and took out a hair pin stylized like a lily of the valley. "Happy birthday."

Kanao stared at the gift, then at Tanjiro's face, then back at the gift, before smiling widely and carefully taking it from his hands.

"Thank you… it's beautiful." She whispered, cradling the object carefully as if it could break.

"Really? Do you like it?"

"Yes, a lot." She assured him.

"I'm so glad…" Tanjiro said with a relieved sigh. "I was really worried if you would like it."

"Hm? Why wouldn't I?"

"Well… you're always using the same hair ornament." He pointed out. "I know you have your reasons and I understand them so… I didn't know if getting you a hair pin would be a good idea."

"I promise I love your gift Tanjiro." She smiled sweetly, gesturing for him to sit down. "But… and again, I love it, but if you were worried about that then why didn't you get me something else?"

"Ahaha, I was planning to at first." He said with a chuckle. "I was on a mission before coming here and this city had a lot of shops, this hairpin was the first thing I saw and..." He trailed off with a blush but took a deep breath and continued. "A-and… I really thought it would suit you; I didn't buy it at first because of what I mentioned about you always using your butterfly ornament so I walked around the town trying to find something else… I found a few things I think you would have liked but none of them felt as good as this one and all the shops were starting to close while I was searching for something else so… I ended up buying it anyway." Tanjiro finished, scratching the back of his head.

Kanao's cheeks flushed read and she looked down at the pin again before moving it closer to her heart with both hands.

"Thank you… I will cherish it." She whispered before moving closer and leaning against his shoulder.

"I'm glad." Tanjiro smiled, gently wrapping his arm around her shoulders to pull her closer.

"…"

"…"

"…ne, Tanjiro."

"Yes?"

"Can I… can I ask for one more gift?"

"Of course!" He said happily. "What would you like?"

Kanao didn't say anything, she simply moved her head to look up at him, a blush adorning her cheeks, her eyes half-lidded and her lips slightly parted.

Tanjiro's heart skipped a beat at the sight and his face quickly turned red but he happily complied with her unspoken request, gently pressing his lips against hers for two seconds before moving back.

"T-hm!"

Tanjiro heard her gasp in surprise and thought about pulling back; that thought flew out the window when her hands moved to his neck and pulled him closer, reassuring him that she wanted him to continue.

He moved his free hand to her back and hugged her close, maintaining the contact for as long as he was able; he felt his body begin to demand for air and ignored it until he simply couldn't anymore.

Kanao was in the same boat, since the two moved back almost simultaneously, faces red and short of breath but a wide smile on their faces.

"…you could have done that from the start." Kanao whispered.

"Just think of it as another surprise." He answered in the same volume, moving his head to rest his forehead against hers. "Kanao."

"Yes?"

He gave her the widest smile he was able.

"Happy birthday."

And done!

-happy sigh- It feels really nice to write just pure fluff for these two once more~

As always, I hope you enjoyed and happy birthday to Kanao.

Before I leave, though:

There is a TanKana fanzine on the works, if anyone is interested in checking it out, please go to twitter, tumblr or Instagram and look for 'Effervescence: A TanKana Zine'.
