AN 1: This is my first foray into fanfiction. I really hope you like it. I really appreciate constructive criticism as it will help me better my writing/plot for the forthcoming chapters and help me grow as a writer. For all those people who are currently following this story or will follow it in future, I will try my best to make this an engaging read.
AN 2: I have also made some major changes to the timeline to accommodate the changes in the plot and some of the characters will also be a bit OOC.
Late 278 AC - Red keep, Kings Landing.
As Rhaegar walked away from the throne room flanked by his kingsguard Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Barristan Selmy he couldn't help but cringe at the cackling laughter emanating from the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen, who he had the misfortune of calling father, and the screams of an innocent child of barely 7 name days as he was being burnt at stake by wildfire. The child's only crime- stealing a couple of loaves of bread from the royal kitchen.
"Father's days as King are numbered, I will make sure of it. But before that, I need to ensure the prophecy is brought to fruition. A Dragon needs to have 3 heads, born of ice and fire… "thought Rhaegar as he walked towards the library near Maegar's Holdfast.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by a small brown-haired missile colliding with his legs. Looking down he could see the violet-colored eyes of his daughter Rhaenys hugging his leg and staring up at him with obvious affection. He fondly mussed up the hair of his daughter much to her chagrin and leaned down to kiss her on her forehead.
"Rhaenys" came to a shout as both the father and daughter looked up to see princess Elia Martell come looking after her daughter carrying a 6 months old baby Aegon in her arms. She was closely followed by the ever-radiant Lady Ashara Dayne, her close friend, and Lady-in-waiting.
As his wife came near, he could see that the latest pregnancy had taken the toll on her already frail health. He had heard Grandmaster Pycelle talking about how another pregnancy was altogether impossible for her and he wondered from where he could get his 'Visenya'. He was broken out of his musings by his wife berating his daughter.
"How many times have I told you Rhae not to run about the keep, especially towards throne room?" Elia scolded their daughter as the said perpetrator hid behind his leg. It only then did she notice him at which she curtseyed formally and quite coldly "My Prince".
The relationship between him and his wife had never been anything beyond friends and it widened significantly when he came to know of her incapability to give him a 3rd child after Aegon's birth. "But what does she or anyone know of the true threat that is rearing its head?" mused Rhaegar as he responded with a nod "My Lady wife ".
Seeking to break the tension between husband and wife, Lady Ashara interjected after exchanging a brief nod with her brother Arthur and a small smile to Ser Barristan asked "How was your day, your Grace?".
Turning his attention, he answered "As good as it can be milady. How was yours and I hope Rhaenys hasn't been up to her usual mischievousness?" as he pulled his daughter in front of him and laid both of his hands on her shoulders and smiled down at her.
Ashara responded with a laugh saying "well … she has been well behaved until now because Princess Elia threatened to lock up Balerion in a cage if she did not pay attention to her lessons."
"Balerion?" He asked amused.
This time it was Rhaenys who responded "She is my cat. She is very cute with black fur and green eyes, but mother won't let me play until I learn my lessons from Aunt Ashara" pouting as she finished her little tirade looking at her father.
Rhaegar responded with a laugh "I am sure you being a smart one will finish your lessons in no time. Still, I shall ask your mother to release it sooner." as he assured his daughter.
Elia this time responded in a rather cold tone "If your father still remembers it after his tryst with his books. Come on, Rhaenys lets go. Let's not keep your father from his books any longer" she quickly snatched Rhaenys's hand and turns about returning to the quarters in the Holdfast with Ashara shooting him an apologetic glance before turning about and hurrying after Elia. Rhaenys's pleading eyes to accompany her was like a stab to his gut but Rhaegar said nothing and maintained a cool façade.
After they had gone a certain distance Arthur tried to reason with Rhaegar "My prince, I think you should spend time with your children. It's not right for a child to be denied a father's attention. Surely your books could….". Whatever Arthur tried to say was cut by Rhaegar quickly interjecting "Let's not tarry any further Ser Arthur" and quickly made his way towards the Library missing the slight grimace on Arthur's face and a slight shake of the head by Ser Barristan.
Later that night just as Rhaegar was about to retire for the night when a light breeze blew a paper from the window and onto Rhaegar's face and blew out one of the two candles he had lit. Just as he was about to throw it away did, he notice something written on it which was only faintly visible. He quickly relit the extinguished candle and started reading the words written on it. To his surprise, the words were in the Old Valyrian. He quickly set about translating the words into the common tongue. When finished he couldn't believe his eyes—it was a prophecy. The prophecy was given in a light tone but Rhaegar couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as he read it out softly.
Arrive they shall The Twins of Storms,
Descend on the Darkest Night shall the Bane of Worms.
The Sea and The Sky unite they must
The Seven into One and win The Dragon's trust
Guide through the Longest Night to Herald a New Dawn.
Rhaegar's hackles immediately went up. "How could there be another prophecy? What about the prince that was promised? Could the future have changed? Am I still missing pieces of the puzzle? No… I must have translated it wrong… No... the Dragon must have Three heads- my very own Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya… I must be really losing my mind... No matter I shall return to it tomorrow" thought Rhaegar as he slowly made his way out of the library towards his room completely disregarding what he read without a second thought which was quite unusual of him. Also, in his haste to exit he had not noticed that the parchment carrying the prophecy and its translation had caught fire and had silently burnt away on the desk. Nor did he a notice a certain pair of sinister Fiery Red eyes watching contemplatively from the shadows.
When the door to the Library was closed shut with a silent thud, a man mused silently as he stepped close near the candle flame from the shadows "So it seems the pesky demigods are once again going to try and disrupt my resurrection… No matter… shall we see if they can survive the Game of Thrones first, shall we?" and let out a demonic laugh that made even the shadows tremble before the being became one with the flame and exited the room extinguishing the flame and plunging the room into darkness.
21st December 2075 AD - in a Los Angeles Hospital, USA
Perseus 'Percy' Jackson was a happy and contented man. Even on his death bed at the age of 81 surrounded by his sons and daughters and grandchildren, he was joking and laughing through the intermittent coughing as his body organs slowly began to shut down one by one.
Observing this scene, as he turned to face the nightstand on the right side of the bed, he couldn't help but smile at the collections of photographs arranged on them. Most of them were of his children and grandchildren. A few of them were old photos of his mother Sally, his stepfather Paul and his little sister Estelle which brought a pang of longing and sadness to his heart as he thought "I am soon joining you guys on the other side... I hope I have made you proud mom".
The other photo was of a girl with blonde hair and stormy grey eyes about 19 who was arm in arm with his younger counterpart, both smiling, which brought a single tear rolling down his cheek." My biggest regret Wise Girl is the life we could have had that was lost …. I hope you have been enjoying in the Elysium along with my mom and Paul." thought Percy as he quickly suppressed his tears by wiping them in the pillow.
The last few pictures though were the ones that brought a huge blinding smile to his face. It was of a beautiful woman with long unbraided black hair that reached her lower back and dark chocolate brown eyes that seemed to be filled mirth behind the slightly haughty look on it wearing a purple low cut gown that seemed to make her as regal as a queen doing justice to her name while accentuating her obvious curves. Then there was a picture of his wedding day wherein both his younger self and the mystery woman seemed completely oblivious to the outside world as both of them gazed at each other with such love and affection as if they were seeing each other after a very long time. The next set of pictures showcased their life together as they kept on adding members to their family of initially 2 members to finally a family photo of both of them along with their 4 children - 2 daughters and 2 sons.
Percy fondly caressed the picture of his late wife Reyna Jackson reminiscing about how they ended up together.
FLASHBACK BEGINS
2013
It was just a couple of years after the Giant War, Percy was very much excited, Today was the day he would be graduating high school. It was a year later than his girlfriend Annabeth as he had to catch up on his irregular schooling due to his streak of getting kicked out of multiple schools due to his supposedly delinquent and violent behaviour (**cough** monster attacks**cough**).
He couldn't wait to join his Wise girl at New Rome University. He had got an admit after his scores had improved and had been given shining Letters of recommendations by Goode High (cough***Poseidon***cough).
Percy was waiting backstage along with the rest of his class, having left home earlier alone in his blue Prius to get ready before the ceremony. As he was pacing about, he couldn't help but suddenly feel as a block of lead had been dropped in the pit of his stomach but quickly pushed them aside classifying them as nervous jitters.
Just as the roll call began one of the teachers burst into the room sweating profusely. He immediately called Percy out to share some news. Percy was immediately on his guard and started fingering his trusty ballpoint pen in his pocket.
'Mr. Jackson' began his Biology teacher, Mr. Matthews, solemnly 'I regret to inform you that your family along with your girlfriend have suffered a car accident. Only your girlfriend Annabeth Chase has survived and is critical and is in surgery in Bellevue Hospital. I offer my deepest condolences…'
To Percy, the rest of the world stopped and shattered into multiple pieces. He could not feel, he could not hear anything. He felt as if he were back under Atlas's burden again. He just blindly nodded and started walking didn't even realize he was near his car until he bumped into the open driver door.
He then quickly turned on his car a drove like a mad man breaking all speed limits and arrived at the hospital within 10 minutes. He immediately ran up the floors discarding his graduation robes as he took the stairs to reach the operating theatre to see the doctor coming out.
'Doctor' he shouted as he skidded to a halt in front of him and shouted 'how is she? How is Annabeth?'. The Doctor in turn asked calmly 'And who are you, young man?'. Percy immediately responded 'Percy Jackson. I'm her boyfriend'. The doctor just simply nodded and placed a hand on his shoulder and solemnly said 'I am deeply sorry Mr. Jackson but we could not save miss chase. She is just taking her last breathes and it would be prudent to say a last few words' saying so the doctor left Percy behind, completely shattered.
Percy did not when he entered the room in which Annabeth lay nor did he know how long he had just been standing taking in her body as it was on Death's doorstep. He snapped it a reality when heard a weak cry calling his name 'Percyyyyy …'.
He immediately took her hand in his and though her form was blurry from his own tears managed to croak out 'hey wise girl... everything is going to be just fine…'. Annabeth weakly smiled 'You are a lousy liar seaweed brain… I know my time is up…' Percy angrily interrupted 'Don't you say that… Don't you dare say that …' as he broke down into a cascade of tears and collapsed onto his knees still clutching her hand. Annabeth's eyes filled with tears but she gently cupped his chin with one hand and lifted it to meet her eyes 'Promise me, Percy… Promise that you will try to move on… find happiness… and create a future…'. Percy tried to protest but no sound could be heard because of his tears but eventually, he managed to croak out 'I promise wise girl… I love you… always have, always will'. Annabeth smiles the brightest smile till date and days 'I love you too seaweed brain… see on the other side and quietly closes her eyes.
The funeral was held for Annabeth at Camp Half-Blood as her siblings make the decorative cloak to be burnt. Percy lights the pyre silently as tears slither down his unseeing eyes which have been dulled as if no life exists. He felt the gentle caress of the breeze on his lips as if someone were laying a gentle but chaste kiss and faced as the pyre burns and silently murmured to the wind ' Goodbye Wise Girl'. As he turned away from the pyre, he saw Athena standing at one end of the Amphitheatre with a stoic expression but even he could see the pain and anguish in her eyes that could only be seen in the eyes of a mother who truly loved her daughter. They just shared a nod and he went on his way towards his cabin without making a single sound.
The next day the burial for Sally Jackson-Blofis, His 2-year-old baby sister Estelle and his stepfather Paul was held and was attended by Nico, Thalia, and a few of his fellow campers. Percy had no more tears to give and just blankly stared ahead as if all life had been sucked out of him leaving behind barely a husk of a person. After the funeral, Nico and Thalia tried to accost him and wanted to talk to him but he simply brushed them aside and retreated back into his impenetrable shell of anguish.
The next six months were absolutely brutal for Percy. He rarely slept or ate food and only left the confines of his cabin to get lost staring out at sea. No one seemed to be able to get to him. Neither could Poseidon nor Tyson seemed to be able to get a few words out of his mouth. Everyone had lost hope of ever reaching out to him and bringing him back, until a certain daughter of Aphrodite decided to visit the camp.
Piper McClean had tried to move on after her ex-boyfriend Jason's death at the hand of the mad man Caligula but in vain. She had tried to go on a few dates but all of them seemed to pale in comparison to Jason's enigma. Thus, when she heard about Percy's tragedy, she empathized with him and but also got a bit angry when she heard of how in his grief he had isolated himself from everyone. She marched over to Percy's cabin and lacing her voice with the most powerful Charm speak said "Perseus Achilles Jackson you better open this goddamn door this instant or I am sure as hell will break it down a shove it where the sun doesn't shine". Percy got up from his bed irritated and opened the door violently ready to shout down and release his anger at whosoever had disturbed his solitude, but his anger was completely drained away when he saw the compassion and understanding kaleidoscopic eyes of Piper as she stood outside his cabin door. When she opened her arms to draw him into a hug, Percy resolve finally broke down into a cascade of tears and he released all of his pent-up emotions and anguish on her shoulder.
As months passed by both of them started to get closer to each other than they had ever been. In her Percy found family, a sister in all but blood. Both started to heal each other and respect and admiration for each of them became deep-rooted in their hearts. Piper was the only one who was able to elicit laughter from Percy and to the surprise of all started to bring out the carefree side of Percy that he had suppressed due to his grief. Despite the progress, Percy could not gain back the laid-back attitude that made him so endeared to all. He became more focused, determined and started to show his innate street smartness and strategic mindset that he had hidden behind his façade of nonchalance and goofiness.
Thus, when piper decided to go back to Los Angeles to continue her career as a fashion designer, he decided to move along with her to continue onto his college education to partly fulfill Annabeth's dream of graduating from New Rome University also a major part of him was disenchanted with the memories associated with the Camp. Even during his short stint as a praetor at Camp Jupiter, he felt more at ease there rather than he did at Camp Half-Blood. Something about the Legion's collective discipline rather than depending on individualistic tactics appealed to him.
On the last day, as they stood over the Half-Blood Hill beside Thalia's tree, Percy couldn't help but feel like this was one final Goodbye. With light tears in his eyes and piper resting her hand on his left shoulder supportively he finally murmured 'Goodbye Wise Girl. I am finally trying to move on and I am going to fulfill your dreams. I just hoped that you could have been here with me.' and left without looking back. He had already shared his goodbyes with Chiron and the rest of the campers. He couldn't help but smile when he looked to his side at Piper. She had become his family almost like a younger sister and mother combined. He was finally ready to move on with his life, wherever it may lead him towards.
Moving to California Percy immediately joined the Marine Biology and Oceanographic Studies Program at New Rome University. To keep his skills sharp he had rejoined the Legion. Frank after a month of Percy's induction to the Legion, stepped down from his praetorship to become the Centurion of the first cohort which had been disgraced after the actions of their previous Centurion Octavian and began to mold it to live up to its reputation. When asked for the reason by Percy he just smirked while conspiratorially sharing a smirk with Hazel and Piper.
When he later found the true reason from Frank (after much bribing … mind you…) after his engagement to Reyna he was forever grateful, as this was when Percy had started to become closer to his future wife Reyna.
At the start both of them quite formal in their interactions but slowly started to thaw each other's frigid hearts – Percy's due to Annabeth's death and Reyna's due to being rejected by Jason and once in the past by Percy. But with encouragement from piper, whom he met thrice a week for dinner, mustered the courage to ask her out for a date.
His tenure as a Praetor along with Reyna was one of the most fruitful as he implemented a flurry of reforms that made the Camp and the Legions rise to great strengths. He showed a completely different side when he led the Legion despite skepticism on Reyna's part due to his inherent disregard for rules and procedure. This coupled with his ability to make anyone feel at ease around him, made them draw closer to each other. Both of them started to draw closer to each other and began healing each other's emotional wounds.
He was lucky that he had asked her out when he did because the very next day the Hunters of Artemis had come to Camp Jupiter to recruit new hunters and Reyna had been seriously considering of accepting it. Thalia poked fun at Percy that it only takes the threat of loss of the girl to the Hunters that he loves her more than just a friend but was happy that her cousin was finally moving on from the trauma of losing Annabeth despite putting on external show of disappointment at the loss of a potential candidate.
Percy and Reyna, eventually retired from the Praetorship to further his career as a world-renowned marine biologist and ocean environment conservationist while Reyna went to complete her college education in International Relations and Strategic Affairs before she joined the CIA office in California.
After dating for about 2 years, Percy finally asked Reyna to marry him. He was so nervous while popping the question that Reyna herself laughingly had to pull the words out of his mouth and gave her consent with a resounding kiss while rare happy tears poured from her eyes. Piper who had been aware of Percy's plan was ecstatic and went crazy planning and designing Reyna's wedding Gown and Percy's Tuxedo driving both of them around the bend. They got married 8 months later in a small chapel near the camp attended by all the demigod cum mortal friends of Percy and Reyna.
That day was Percy's happiest day in his life and also soothed Reyna's underlying doubt that she was just a shoo-in for Annabeth which she had confessed to him as they laid tangled in their sheets that night. Reyna no matter her confident exterior was still plagued by self doubt when it came to the matter of relationships and was wary of being vulnerable and baring her true emotions to someone. Percy had just stared at her after the confession for a couple of seconds before kissing the life out of her and proved to her that night and every day for the next 55 years of their married life how much he loved her.
FLASHBACK ENDS
Percy shook his head to come out of his nostalgia and past memories to the present. His wife had passed silently away in her sleep as she clung to him a scant two years ago as if afraid to let go of him. That was a big blow to his strength and will to live and from that point on Percy knew his days were numbered and began counting the days until he could join his wife, dead family, and friends in the was often the one who would soothe him and calm him down when he was plagued by the nightmares of Tartarus during the initial days of his support was the paramount reason Percy ever recovered from the psychological trauma due to his journey through it.
Suddenly, he felt very weary and without noticing the surrounding chatter slowly slipped into a lifelong slumber as his eyes shuttered close, clinging to the picture of his beloved wife with a smile on his face with a nary a thought on his mind.
