My first time trying to write a songfic.
The Song is 'True Colors' from the movie 'Trolls'; watch?v=ZjkXfdOLe1U.
Chris was in the kitchen of her apart, putting the final touch for tonight's meal, a proud smile on her face as she witnesses her best work in front of her. Though her smile quickly fades when the face of Hibiki pops up in her mind.
She releases a sigh, she knew her friend's mood was at its lowest currently, which is not surprising, her friend had gone through a roller-coaster of events and emotions, from having a fight with her childhood friend, having to deal with Alca-Noises afterward, for it to be a whole diversion for their opponent to aim for the pipsqueak; Elfnein and the childhood friend Kohinata Miku.
The scene was, simply put, bloody, no body to be found, thus giving the ever slight chance that both weren't dead. And when finally, after fighting one hell of a tentacle divine monster, that said childhood friend was now possessed by a goddess and as if it was not enough, senpai betraying us for some obscure reasons that nobody really understands.
So, yeah, in retrospect something as simple as a meal is far from being the best thing for cheering up her friend, currently suspended from any S.O.N.G activities for 'illegal usage of unknown power'.
Chris let out another sigh, heavier this time before her eyes shift toward the direction of her own bedroom. 'I should check on her,' she thought before putting a lid on the meal, to prevent it from cooling down too fast.
Opening the door of her bedroom quietly, Chris was welcomed by darkness and had to open the door wider for the light of the hallway to illuminate the piece where Hibiki was resting.
The weak light was enough for Chris to spot the immobile form of her friend laying on her bed and her back facing her. The younger girl didn't bother to even change, the jacket of the S.O.N.G uniform was laying on the floor alongside the scarf, leaving her in the yellow undershirt, the uniform's shorts and winter tights.
Chris' heart was aching at the sight, the most positive girl she has ever know was currently nothing more but sadness by the recent chain of events that befalls her, crushed by the world and she didn't know what to do to help her.
You with the sad eyes
Words begin to fill the eerily silent room before she could register that it was coming from her own mouth.
Don't be discouraged
Oh I realize
The words flow naturally to her own surprised, wondering what she was doing but before she knew she was sitting close to her laying friend who just tense a bit, signaling her she was awake and listening.
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
The darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small
She was singing, something she had done plenty while fighting with the help of her relic or simply when she was alone. But not to someone else, while she did sing during her school cultural festival last year, it was to a large public, not to a single person.
She could stop, but she also knows that she will have an easier time conveying her own feelings and emotions through singing than talking. Deciding to go with it, she gently put her hand on her friend's shoulder, leaning to try to catch a glimpse of her face.
Show me a smile then
Don't be unhappy, can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
Too long ago to Chris liking, since Miku's whereabouts were unknown, whether she was alive or dead. A smile did blossom on her face in relief from learning both; the pipsqueak and her were sound and rather safe but it didn't last long for it to be crumbled by the next chain of events.
This world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
Chris tightens her grips on Hibiki ever so slightly, leaning her forehead against it as well to convey as much comfort as possible through the contact.
Hibiki took too much to her liking, while she did do a bunch as well on her own, it's exactly why she could empathize with her kouhai so much. On how having someone by your side can alleviate much of the pain you are feeling as well as how when that person's absence can make it even worse than previously.
Just call me up
Because I'll always be there
That something Hibiki never does, actually her as well. Despite having friends to talk to, each of them willing to help others in some or any way they could when asked. But when it's concerning themselves… they would let things pile up until its burst, like Hibiki's matter with her father and herself with the responsibility of taking care and protecting her kouhais as well as her home and happiness she had obtained.
And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
Hibiki perks up to the last world obviously, looking at Chris with wide eyes for a moment in which the latter doesn't budge, not intending to withdraw what she had just sung.
It prompts Hibiki to sit up, her hands founding her senpai's, holding them in her own and leaning her forehead against the other before surprising her by resuming the singing, followed by Chris right after.
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Both girls pull away from the other as they continue singing together, still holding the other's hands, soft smiles on their face as they let the lyrics of their impromptu duet echoes in the room.
And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow
Like a rainbow
The end of their duet lets place to a moment of silence before Chris breaks it. "We will save her, Hibiki. I don't know how, but we will." She says assuredly.
Hibiki launches herself into hugging her senpai, the latter accepting it without issue, returning it as she lets her kouhai having it.
"Thank you, Chris."
"Anytime."
They stay like this for a moment, Chris could feel her kouhai trembling in her arms but didn't say anything about it. "Are you hungry?"
"A bit," Hibiki mumbles, and as if on cue a growling stomach could be heard.
Chris chuckles. "The beast inside you seems to not fully agree with you on this."
Hibiki laughs softly in turn, pulling herself from her friend. "Seems like it."
Chris brought a hand toward Hibiki, cupping her face and wiping tears from the corner of her eyes. "Good thing I make dinner, come."
Hibiki follows her senpai out of the bedroom, Chris holding her hand as she leads her to the living room.
"Oh right," Chris lets out, turning her attention back to Hibiki. "You tell anyone that I sing for you, and I will make you regret surviving to all the shit that happened to us so far."
Hibiki giggles to it, not missing the smile on her senpai face despite the hollow threat she had just proclaimed. "Then I'm good telling the others that you said you love me?"
"Actually, if you do, I can assure you that I will kill you in your sleep." Chris grins before taking on a more serious tone. "Seriously don't. If you do the others will pester me that I say the same to them."
"My lips are sealed," Hibiki replies, mimicking the movement of a zipper on her mouth. "So, what did you make to eat?"
"Don't worry, you will like it."
