Kate Wallis lowered her rifle, wiping the sweat from her forehead. She could hear the crunch of gravel under tires. Jeanette was almost here. Kate hefted the rifle and fired again, the beer can she had targeted flying from the stump with a satisfying twang. Her ears rang, but she still heard the sound of the car door slamming.
"Kate. Hey. When did you get back in town?"
"Just a couple days ago."
"You've been laying low. No one knows you're here."
"I'm surprised you're still here."
"I'm not leaving until my name is cleared."
"That's why I came back."
Jeanette laughed nervously. "You gonna shoot me?"
Kate chuckled darkly. "Today's my two year anniversary. Two years of freedom. This is the day I was rescued."
"I know."
"I'm back because I know who put me there, and it's time for them to face the consequences. I need your help, Jeanette."
"You finally realize I was telling the truth?"
"Yeah. We both told the only truth we knew. Now it's time for the real truth to come out. You with me?"
"Hell, yeah."
"You're not gonna like some of it."
"I don't care. I just want it over."
"Good. Grab the other gun from the back of the truck, and let's shoot for a while."
"Look, Kate, about Jamie-"
"It doesn't matter now. He used us both. The only thing that matters now is justice."
A heavy silence came and went. "I agree," Jeanette finally said.
"Good. Let's shoot, and then we'll plan our attack."
"Fair enough."
The only sounds then were the droning of insects in the brush and the intermittent sounds of gunfire.
