Authors Note. This story starts right at the end of the episode 'Tracks'. It's the longest I've written so far and I hope it's a bit more of an adventure than normal, with of course my usual preference for a bit of a love story too!

"Cait, are you sure you will be OK driving this back?" asked Dom pointing at the RV they had been staying in.

"Sure Dom, piece of cake" smiled Cait.

"Well, OK then. I'm gonna get String and the Lady out of here before anyone starts asking some awkward questions."

"You go Dom, I'll just get tidied up here and I'll be on my way. See you tomorrow at the hangar."

"Sure sweetheart" replied Dom, giving Cait a quick hug before heading back in the direction of where he had left String.

After watching him go, Cait headed into the RV to get changed, suddenly feeling awkward in her Airwolf flight suit.

"Hey Caitlin, are you in there?"

Cait looked out the window to see Ben waiting outside.

"Hey Ben, I was just getting changed" said Cait pushing open the door of the RV. "Are you OK? Other than that tiny cut on your hand I mean?"

Ben smiled.

"Yeah fine, I just wondered if you needed any help. I'm not due to be picked up until later"

"OK, thanks, that would be great" smiled Cait, starting to toss the pots and pans back into a box. "Say, where do you need a lift back too? I'm heading for Van Nuys Airport to drop the RV back to Dom's friend. I could give you a lift?"

"I'm only about 30 minutes from there, so that would be great. I'm sure I can get word to my brother, to stop him coming to get me."

"Great, OK, well I would be glad of the company."

"String are you sure you don't want to go to the hospital and get checked out?" asked Dom through gritted teeth.

"Dom, I'm fine, I thought my leg was broken, it's not, now can we just get out of here please."

Dom could do nothing but roll his eyes and get the Lady in the air. He was just grateful that String hadn't insisted he fly her himself.

After a period of silence between the two men, Dom spoke:

"You were pretty mean to Cait back there you know. She was only trying to help you."

"I don't need her help, I'm fine" replied String with a sigh.

"She cares about you String, that's all."

"Yeah."

"Yeah. Is that all you can say! Exclaimed Dom. "Do you know I think Cait is developing some sort of 6th sense all of her own. She just knew something wasn't right today, and it's not the first time that's happened either."

"I don't need anyone worrying about me Dom" replied String gruffly.

"Oh! Is that right? Well let me tell you something String, whether you like it or not, there are some of us who DO care about you, and I suspect Cait is the one who cares about you the most. You get what I'm saying?"

"Dom, I just want to sleep."

"Why of all the stubborn, pig headed….fine, fine, you go to sleep!"

"So, the Olympics, that must've been some experience?" asked Cait finally swinging the RV onto the road.

"Yeah, it was amazing, such an honour to represent my country doing something I loved, but then…..well, I had my accident and that was it"

Oh look, sorry, I didn't mean to upset you" said Cait, glancing briefly at Ben before returning her attention to the road ahead.

"No, honestly, it's fine. I'm OK….now. I've made a new life for myself and I still get to take part in sport. Anyway, what about you? Your life must be pretty exciting, flying in to take out the bad guys" laughed Ben.

"Oh, I just work on fixing up choppers and fly them when I can. Do a few movie stunts, you know, stuff like that."

"That seems pretty exciting to me…what does your partner think about it?"

"Partner? Oh, you mean a significant other. I don't have one of those in my life just now….haven't for some time in fact. Nothing ever seems to quite work out. How about you?"

"There was someone, but somehow we drifted apart, both too stubborn to do anything about it."

"It sounds like you miss her."

"Sometimes, but it's OK, some things just aren't meant to be I guess."

"Tell me about it!" exclaimed Cait.

After a pause

"You and Hawke seem close" said Ben turning to look at Cait.

"The 3 of us, Hawke, Dom and myself…..we make a good team. We're friends that's all."

"So, I wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes then if I asked if you fancied coming to watch me play basketball tomorrow night then and perhaps go for a drink after?"

Cait smiled.

"Sure, I'd really like that."

String had slept most of the way back, much to Dom's relief. He hated it when String became so stubborn that there was just no talking to him. Mind you, whilst he could still brood with the best of them, when he thought about it, Dom had to admit that over the past couple of years String had been easier to deal with. Less darkness, more light. The old romantic in him was sure it had something to do with Cait arriving in their lives, but he knew there would be no point trying to get String to admit that that might be the case.

"String, do you want some help getting inside?" asked Dom as he landed the Lady near the cabin.

"I've told you, I'm fine Dom." replied String.

"Right I'm not going to argue, but just tell me you will call if you need anything uh?"

"Sure Dom" replied String, struggling to pull himself out of the Lady. He made his way slowly towards the cabin and didn't even look back. Dom watched him go, shook his head and took the Lady back into the air.
