Not So Lucky
Chapter 1
The cool tile floor felt good beneath Anna's hands, as she sat back against the bathroom wall and let out a loud, heavy sigh. She was only allowed a moment to rest, before the sickness ravaged her again, forcing her to lean forward and vomit into the porcelain. As she heaved, she felt John's hand grab at her hair, while his other hand rubbed her back.
"Oh my darling," he soothed. "Why didn't you wake me?"
She didn't have a chance to answer, because there was more sickness. This time, though, her stomach was empty. All that came out was thin, clear bile.
Once she was sure that it was done for now, she rested herself back on the wall. John was already wetting a cloth with cool water to place on her head. He then flushed the toilet, closed the lid, and sat.
"Perhaps you should see a doctor, it wasn't this bad when you were pregnant with Jack."
He was right. While she had morning sickness with Jack, this was very different. It took over her morning, afternoon, and night. With Jack, she only had it in the evenings and it ended right at twelve weeks pregnant.
"I have my appointment tomorrow," she reminded him, standing up. "I just need my mint tea and crackers and I'll be alright." John stood with her and pressed a kiss to her temple. His hand came to rest on the small bulge of her fifteen week belly.
"Let me make your tea. Get back in bed. I'll get Jack when he wakes up," John told her. She nodded, grateful. It was times like this that she was glad they didn't have to rush in the mornings. Their restaurant didn't open until lunchtime and they did most of the prepping the day before. They also had their staff who did most of the prep work before opening. However, even though they could now afford a decent staff to cover most of the time and effort, John and Anna still preferred to be working most of the restaurant's hours. It was their life's work and meant the world to them.
Anna climbed back into the bed and closed her eyes. She could hear little footsteps down the hall and her lips curled up.
"Hey," John whispered and the footsteps headed away from the bedroom door.
"Daddy!"
"Shh."
Anna chuckled. She closed her eyes, thinking of her son, Jack. He was now three years old and had been such a special gift in their life. He brought so much joy and happiness.
The door creaked opened and Anna glanced toward it to see John and Jack walking towards her. Jack had his finger over his lips, continuously saying shh. John handed her the tea and crackers, kissing the top of her head.
"Mummy, I'm being quiet," Jack told her, keeping his finger on top of his lips.
"Very good," Anna said, running her fingers through his blonde hair. He looked so much like her with his blonde locks and blue eyes.
"Get rest!" He insisted, before grabbing John's hand and forcing him to leave the room. Anna chuckled, as John gave her a pretend helpless look. He closed the door, allowing Anna to attempt to get a little bit more rest before needing to get up for the day.

"Mummy, where are you going?" George questioned, pulling at the hem of Mary's top. Mary paused her steps and turned to look down at her son. He was always right there beside her. It was rare that he wasn't on her heels. While he looked and acted like his father, he was little boy who adored his mother.
Mary gave him a loving smile and patted his head.
"I have to go to work, but I'll be back. You'll have fun with Nanny." George's arms crossed over his chest and his brows set, as his lips fell into a thin, unhappy line. It was in these moments that he looked like her.
"But I want you!"
"I know darling," Mary soothed. "I won't be gone long. Then this afternoon we're going to see Auntie Anna, Uncle John, and Jack at the restaurant. Doesn't that sound fun?"
Mentions of some of his favorite people made George's scowl fall from his face and he nodded.
"That's a good boy, now go on up to Nanny."
George did as he was told and Mary watched as he made his way up the stairs. Once he was out of sight, she turned and walked into Matthew's study. A few days a week he worked from home. It allowed him to have more time with George. He would spend time with him during his down times throughout the day.
Matthew glanced up, smiling when he saw it was Mary. She crossed the room and gave him a quick kiss.
"I'm off to Downton. I won't be long. Will you be able to join George and me for the late lunch at The Servant's Hall?"
Matthew nodded. "I should be able to."
"Good. Goodbye, darling."

The door dinged and Anna glanced up, smiling when she saw that it was Detective Hughes and Mr. Carson. The two of them had begun visiting The Servant's Hall since soon after Jack was born. Anna had known Mr. Carson since she was only fifteen, as he was head butler of Downton Abbey. And Detective Hughes had worked her case against Alex Green. When the two of them had come in together that day, Anna had been pleased. And since then, they kept coming. They absolutely adored Jack and he loved them back. It was such a wonderful little relationship that they had. Anna thought how in the end her son had gotten two surrogate grandparents.
Jack stepped forward to them, placing his hands behind his back and looking up at them.
"Do you need a seat?" He questioned. They both laughed, but nodded. "This way."
Jack had grown up in the restaurant and so he considered himself one of the workers. He often carried around a little pad and pencil, where he would scribble down people's orders. John and Anna encouraged this and many of the regulars looked forward to their little server, Jack. It had made Jack quite the social child. He could strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone.
Detective Hughes and Mr. Carson were taken to their usual table, where one of the servers stood behind Jack as he "took" their order.
"You are such an impressive worker, Jack," Detective Hughes gushed.
"Yup, I know." There were more giggles. Jack walked over to Anna and handed him his scribbled pad of paper.
"Thank you," she told him. "Why don't you go back and see if you can't help Alfred for a little while?"
Jack grinned. Alfred was his favorite person. When the restaurant wasn't too busy, Alfred let Jack help him in the back. His sous chef, Ivy, also doted on Jack. They often had him sorting sauces or bringing them different items from the counter. And they were more than the main chef and sous chef, now they were engaged. Alfred had proposed to Ivy just a month ago and John and Anna couldn't be happier for them.
"I'm going to work!" Jack said, before disappearing in the back.
"Have you thought about it?" Anna nearly jumped, not expecting John to come up behind her and whisper into her ear. As she turned to face him, she saw that he was wearing a sheepish look upon his face. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
"It's alright," Anna assured him, winking. "But have I thought about what?"
"What I suggested, about finding a new home?"
"Oh," Anna chewed on the inside of her lip. They were growing too big for the loft upstairs. It had been perfect when Jack was a baby. But now as a three year old, it seemed like they were nearly bursting out of it. And soon there would be a second baby taking up space. However, it was their home and had been for many years. Anna wasn't sure she could just give it up."
"Just keep thinking on it," John said, kissing the top of her head. "Nothing has to be decided on right away."
Anna nodded. He walked away, getting back to work. Anna glanced up and her lips thinned. Across the street stood her mother. This happened about every few months. She would see a glimpse of her mother across the street, looking in. She never came to the restaurant, finally understanding that she wasn't allowed near them. In these moments, Anna always felt uncomfortable. She'd look away, only to inevitably find her eyes drawn back to where her mother was standing. John always offered to go and tell her to leave, but Anna told him not to. She told him that her mother was well within her rights to stand at a far distance and watch.
A shuddering breath left Anna's lips and she glanced back up, this time to see that her mother was gone. Before she could think much more of it, Mary, Matthew, and George came in through the front door.
"Hi!" Anna happily greeted her friends. She walked over to give Mary a hug. As they drew apart, Mary's hand rested on the small belly.
"Oh, Anna, you are always such a beautiful pregnant woman."
Anna blushed.
"Where's Jack?"
"In the kitchens, go on," Anna said to George. George looked to his parents for reassurance and they nodded that he could go.
Once George had gone to the back, Anna went with Mary and Matthew to the booth in the back. She sat down with them, exhausted. Not only was she more sickly with this pregnancy, she also found that she was more tired. Her hand came up to rub against her temple, right as John placed down three drinks.
"Stay here and eat," he suggested. "We're not busy."
Anna gave him a grateful smile.
"Hey! Turn that up!" The lone patron at the small bar asked of the television. Anna watched as John went to the one television they kept for sports' nights, which were their highest earning evenings, and turned it up.
"Turkish Diplomat, Kemal Pamukā¦."
Anna's head jerked back to look at Mary. Mary had gone pale and her eyes were locked on the television screen.
"Kemal Pamuk was found dead while visiting the Duke of Hastings. More details to follow."
To be continued...
I did forget to mention with the epilogue of Lucky One that yes, the Duke of Hastings is a bit of a crossover with Bridgerton, haha. You don't need to know anything about Bridgerton, though, to enjoy this story. His character is not that important, outside of being the husband to Lavinia. Please let me know if you'd like more. Thank you.
