Dean leaned against Baby, looked into the blue sky and glugged down a throatful of beer. It was cold, crisp and sharp, much needed on such a hot day.
He closed his eyes and breathed in, steadying his nerves. He heard a whooshing noise behind him. Dean slowly opened his eyes and chewed his bottom lip. He slowly turned around and saw Castiel standing before him.
The angel was wearing the same suit and trench coat, even now when he was helping Jack recreate Heaven. Cas looked down at the ground for a moment before meeting Dean's eye.
"Dean," he said almost sheepishly.
Dean nodded in return at first before saying: "Cas."
"You...umm...asked to see me?" asked the angel.
"Yeah," said Dean. "I thought we should talk."
"Talk?" asked Castiel, pushing his hands deep into his pockets. "About what?"
"About what?" asked Dean incredulously.
"You seem upset," remarked Castiel.
"Do I?" asked Dean.
Castiel took his eyes away from Dean and looked at Baby.
"Your car seems…"
"Look at me," barked Dean.
It was Castiel's turn to chew his bottom lip before looking back at Dean. Blue eyes met green eyes and locked.
"I," started Castiel.
"Shut up," ordered Dean. Castiel closed his mouth. "Just shut up, Cas."
Dean pointed at Cas and was about to start saying something but couldn't.
Cas was about to say something again when Dean held his hand up to say stop. Cas obeyed once again.
"Cas, " started Dean.
"Dean…" Cas tried to say something and took a step closer.
"No, " said Dean. "Stay there and let me talk."
Castiel extended his hands to say sure, whatever you say.
"Right…" Dean said, running his hands through his hair and started to pace back and forth.
"Ok," Dean said…"Ok."
Dean cleared his throat and licked his lips.
"Shut up, Cas," said Dean.
Cas gave a wtf shrug.
"Yeah, well...I could hear you think it."
Cas nodded and scratched his chin.
"So, the thing is…" Dean breathed out and took another glug of beer.
"I haven't seen you since…" Dean looked down at the ground and squeezed his eyes shut. "Since you died."
Cas looked away, looking shy and embarrassed,
"And…" continued Dean. "I have been...waiting for you to…"
Cas looked up at the sky and chewed his bottom lip some more.
"To…" Dean tried to find the words but he couldn't.
"Dean," began Castiel.
Dean smashed his bottle onto the ground and pointed as Cas.
"There's no excuse," growled Dean. "None...for not coming to see me."
"I…" said Castiel.
"And don't tell me you were too busy," said Dean. "What the fuck, man?"
"I'm sorry," said Castiel.
"Sorry?" said Dean. "No, that's not gonna cut it."
"I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry I told you I..."
"You're sorry for that?"
Castiel looked around and back at the ground.
"I'm sorry if I...embarrassed you." Castiel looked as though he was blushing. "With everything you've been through...I didn't want to impose on you."
Dean closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead.
"Impose?" Dean whispered.
"Yes," said Castiel.
Dean walked over and leaned on Baby. "You think that telling me that you…"
"That I love you was an imposition, yes," said Castiel.
Dean shook his head.
"I was not sure if you knew my true meaning, Dean," said Castiel.
"What do you mean?" whispered Dean.
Castiel took a breath. "My true meaning is that I don't just love you...I am IN love with you."
Dean looked at Castiel and he looked up at the sky.
"Yeah," said Dean and nodded. "I knew exactly what you meant."
"And I am sure you understand now why I stayed away," said Castiel. "Things can never go back to us being friends or brothers or just family - it would hurt me too much and be too embarrassing for you."
"Embarrassing?" whispered Dean. "Cas, I…"
Dean closed his eyes and breathed out heavily.
"You're a coward," said Dean.
"Excuse me?" Castiel said slowly in his deep, gravelly voice.
"A coward," growled Dean.
"I'm a coward?" asked Castiel, his eyes narrowing and taking a step closer.
"So you just hit and run with 'I love you'?"
"To be fair, I was trying to save you, the world and all of humanity," growled Castiel.
"That old line," growled Dean back. "Who hasn't used the world is about to end, I love you."
"It means something when I say it," said Castiel, standing a few feet away from Dean.
"Ouch," whispered Dean, leaning back.
"I'm sorry, " said Castiel looking apologetic and reached out an arm.. "That was rude of me."
Dean looked at the blue eyed angel standing before him with his black ruffled hair and stubble.
Dean gently wrapped his fingers around Castiel's wrist. Castiel looked at Dean's hand on his and his body seemed to shiver slightly.
"Nah," said Dean. "I deserved that."
Dean licked his lips and shuffled his feet, still holding onto Castiel's wrist.
"So, umm," said Dean, rubbing the back of his head with his other hand.
Castiel tilted his head to one side and narrowed his eyes.
"The thing is….I…" said Dean. "Fuck, I miss you, Cas."
Castiel narrowed his eyes some more and took another step forward.
"Miss me?" asked Castiel.
"Yeah," said Dean, reaching over and jokily punching Castiel on the shoulder.
Castiel looked at his shoulder.
"I miss your…" Dean gestured widely with the hand that wasn't still holding onto Castiel's wrist. "Your...everything."
"My...everything?" asked Castiel.
"Yeah, man," whispered Dean as he took a step closer to Castiel, so they were merely inches from each other.
Dean looked into Castiel's eyes.
"I miss your everything," Dean whispered.
"I miss your everything too," whispered Castiel back.
Dean reached over and ran his thumb along Castiel's jawline. Castiel inhaled deeply.
"Wanna come for a ride in Baby?" asked Dean.
Castiel slowly smiled. "I'm not the kind of angel," he whispered.
"Wanna bet?" Dean whispered back.
Castiel grinned.
"Let me drive?" asked Castiel.
Dean took a step back, put his hand in his pocket and tossed Castiel the keys.
"She's all yours," Dean said softly as Castiel smiled widely.
