Disclaimer: I own nothing
"Day twelve," she began, holding a voice recorder up to her lips. "The suspected Phantom Thief, Ren Amamiya, still hasn't found out I'm following him."
The Shujin Student Council President, Makoto Niijima, had been given the responsibility of finding the Phantom Thieves of Hearts by Principal Kobayakawa. Finding the infamous transfer student to be the most likely suspect, she set out to follow him around Shibuya whenever possible, hiding behind the guise of a student engrossed in a book.
The disguise was simple, but foolproof.
So far, she had witnessed him enter a shady airsoft shop several times. Almost every day that she tailed him, in fact. He also tended to frequent the underground mall where he would most often socialize with Ann Takamaki, another suspect. On days where there was no school, he'd sometimes travel to the arcade to fraternize with another delinquent and suspect, Ryuji Sakamoto.
She was close to something, Makoto just knew it. But knowing something was bound to come your way didn't make waiting for it any less boring. "Come on! You've been in that damn bookstore for almost ten minutes!" she groaned.
Her wish was granted in the next instant when Ren Amamiya exited the store, with a bag in hand, eyeing around suspiciously, as if to ensure he wasn't being watched.
But being watched is exactly what was happening. "Suspect might think something is afoot. Must take care that he doesn't see me." She noted in her voice recorder.
After dismissing any thoughts of being followed, he continued down Shibuya's Central Street, maneuvering through the crowds of people until reaching the movie theatre.
Makoto pulled out her voice recorder again. "Suspect is entering the movie theatre. As far as I've observed, he has yet to show any interest in media. Must investigate further."
Pulling out her wallet, the President made sure of her current funds. Whatever movie he was going to enter, she was sure to have enough to attend it with him, but she couldn't afford to be distracted by the movie itself. It was extremely possible that he was using the movie as a covert meeting place to discuss nefarious Phantom Thief business.
She entered the theatre and saw the suspect buying two tickets and then retreating towards the snack stand within. "Two tickets?" Makoto pondered aloud. "So he is meeting someone…"
Hurrying to the ticket stand, she prayed the line would move fast enough for the attendant to remember what movie Ren Amamiya was going to see. Unfortunately for her, the line was moving at a snail's pace. She had no earthly idea how such a long line had managed to form in the time between his entering and hers. Her only respite was the fact that the line her suspect was waiting in was just as long.
Finally nearing the front, Makoto jumped when a voice called out from behind her. "What are you doing?" a deep voice asked. She turned around to see the transfer student with tickets and popcorn in one hand, and a tray with two drinks in the other. "I've already got our tickets, so let's get going." he urged her with a genuine smile gracing his surprisingly soft features.
"I-I-I-I-" Makoto found it impossible to get out a single word. "I-I-I think y-y-you h-have the w-wrong person…" she pathetically whimpered.
"Pretty sure that I don't." he laughed. "You are Makoto Niijima, aren't you? Student Council President of Shujin Academy."
"H-how did you-"
"Come on," he urged her again. "Our movie is gonna start soon."
Tentatively, she followed him, unsure as to what she did wrong. There was no way he could have seen her.
Guiding her into the theatre, Ren led her to their seats, observing how empty their movie was. "I'm surprised," he thought aloud. "I thought there'd be more people here."
She didn't say anything, simply opting to sit down in silence. "Oh, I didn't know what you liked, so I just got you some cola, is that okay?" he suddenly said, offering her one of the drinks.
"Why is he acting like we know each other?!" the President screamed inside herself. "I-I don't drink soda…" she meekly answered.
A face of disappointment greeted her as he retracted the drink. "Oh, I'm sorry…"
Ren placed the drink in the cupholder between them and proceeded to offer her popcorn, only for it to be rejected as well. "I d-don't eat popcorn…"
Another disappointed face showed itself as he set the food down by his feet. "Sorry." he apologized again as he sat back, waiting for the movie to play.
As the theatre darkened, Makoto found it impossible to move. Her feet were glued to the ground. Thousands of thoughts were speeding through her mind, trying to understand how he knew she was following him, how she let him lure her here, and what he was planning to do to her. If he really was a Phantom Thief, there was no doubt that this movie was a sort of smoke and mirrors to cover up his true intentions, though she didn't even know what his false intentions were.
The movie began playing soon after the trailers. It was a romantic comedy from what Makoto could tell in the beginning. Though her focus was more on Ren's movements and mannerisms than the film.
Eventually, her guard unintentionally lowered and she began watching the movie like she would if she had come here of her own volition. Though that guard was sure to be put back up not even a minute after it was lowered.
She felt his warm, somewhat rugged fingers wrap around her hand that laid on the arm rest. Her hand closed tightly, locking his hand to hers.
She looked to the would-be criminal whose gaze never moved from the screen. He coolly took a sip from his drink as a content smile spread across his lips.
Biting her lip to keep her cool, Makoto slowly relaxed her hand and eased it out of his grasp. Shockingly, it was easy. In fact, he let go of her the moment he realized that the President was trying to reclaim it.
The movie continued to play as Makoto tried her damnedest to ensure that she never lowered her guard, but she found it hard not to pay attention to the movie every so often. Halfway through, she ended up forgetting about Ren's presence all-together, save for a few instances where she realized how she ended up in the theatre to begin with.
When the movie finally ended, Ren escorted her out of the theatre and gazed up at the darkening sky. "It's getting a little late, but if you'd like, I know a diner close by. It has good food." he said with an innocent smile and kind eyes.
"I-I-I should p-probably get home…" She was still too nervous to speak clearly. Nervous and confused.
"Oh…" he pouted. "Well, can I walk you home?"
That question triggered a different sort of fear response. Makoto wasn't in flight mode, but rather fight mode. If he was who she thought he was, this was a threat. "Don't be absurd!" She yelled. "There's no way I'm letting you anywhere near my house!"
Ren stepped back defensively, before laughing. "Okay, I've got it." he acquiesced to her. "But please tell me I'll be able to take you out on another date."
Never before had a feeling of true horror and dread filled the President. "Huh?!" she gasped. "D-D-D-D-Date?!"
"Yeah," he laughed again. "What did you think this was? A boy and a girl at the movies together, hand holding, and me asking to walk you home - It seems pretty self-explanatory."
"B-B-B-But," Makoto had never been so flummoxed. She had no dating experience, but considering the facts, she had just gone on a date. "Oh, Sis is gonna kill me!" she cried to herself. "I'm not allowed to have a boyfriend!"
"Is that so?" Ren asked, invading her collapsing mind as he grabbed her hand from her side, holding it just below his lips. "Then does that mean you have to keep me a secret?" There was something about his tone that was totally different. It was dripping with a sort of seductive and tantalizing sense of delinquency. It was the call of the indecent and the wrong.
Ren placed a small kiss at her knuckle before letting her arm fall back to her side.
"I-I-I-I-I-I-I-" Makoto's mind had been broken. She wasn't mentally prepared for these events to take place, nor was she properly experienced enough to guide herself out of it.
"You don't have to answer me right now." he reassured her. "But the next time I see you following me, I'll assume that means you want to continue where we left off here tonight." He turned to leave, but stopped himself. "Oh, and if we do continue, I'm going to also assume that it means we're boyfriend and girlfriend."
"Wha-" her voice gave out before she could manage a single word, leaving Ren with enough time to escape into the crowd as Makoto's mind worked overtime to get her working properly again.
"B-B-B-Boyfriend?" she asked. "D-D-Date? Continue?"
Just a little one-shot I thought of a little while ago. If anyone wants to make something larger out of this, feel free to take the idea. Please keep me informed though since I'd love to read it.
