Lucifer was not sure how he'd gotten himself into this situation. Loud cries surrounded him and he was practically running through the crowd of people. This was not his place. This was like the opposite of his element.
Trixie however was absolutely loving it. Santa Monica Pier was crowded with other families all enjoying the games and foods and the rides. How the devil got saddled with taking a child to the pier was a mystery. A mystery named 'pleasing Chloe Decker.'
Trixie dragged the rather-overdressed devil down the pier, cotton candy in one hand and the hand of the stumbling devil in the other. If he could just fly to where they were going, but no, he just had to severe his wings and was thus doomed to struggle amidst other children and their parents. Fantastic.
"Come on, Lucifer!" Trixie said, trying to pull him faster.
"Urchin, the ocean will not be gone when we get there," Lucifer countered as he was dragged past other entertainments and towards the end of the pier.
"Lucifer?"
Lucifer pulled himself and Trixie to a stop at the voice. He turned, a smile breaking out on his lips as he saw the man approaching.
"Evan! This trip just got a whole lot better." Lucifer looked down to Trixie and gestured to the two approaching them, "Spawn, this is Evan Buckley though he prefers Buck. I don't however. Evan, what are you doing here?"
Buck smiled, gesturing to the young boy with him, "A day out with this little man here. Christopher, this is an old friend—"
"With no stri—"
Buck covered the devil's mouth with a hand, "Friend of mine, Lucifer Morningstar." The firefighter gave his friend a stern look and slowly removed his hand. "Luce, this is the son of my friend and co-worker, Christopher Diaz."
"Nice to meet you," Christopher smiled brightly.
Lucifer's smile on the other hand was polite yet unsure, "Hello, Urchin Two."
"Lucifer," Trixie huffed. She then turned to Buck and Christopher, "He's just like that with kids. Hi, I'm Beatrice but everyone calls me Trixie. My mom made Lucifer bring me here, he works with her."
"Your new detective friend?" Buck guessed from the different way the young girl worded her sentence saying he worked with her, not that she worked with him.
Lucifer nodded. "She had a case and apparently I'm currently grounded so I was given babysitting duties when Daniel was given unexpected work."
"And I'm sure the devil doesn't do babysitting." Buck laughed at Lucifer's scowl, which only made that scowl deepen. "Aw, come on, Luce. It's not that bad."
"This—" Lucifer waved a hand around— "Is terrible. Much too chaotic and there's too many little humans here for my tastes."
Buck laughed again then bent down and whispered to Trixie, "He's a bit of a party-pooper isn't he?"
Trixie grinned and nodded. "We're going to the end of the pier, want to join us?"
Christopher nodded, "Sure!"
Trixie's grin widened and she took the boy's hand and off they went. The girl was careful as she pulled Christopher with her, making sure he could keep up. Lucifer sighed and Buck laughed at him as they followed after the two children.
"Where are your parents?" Trixie asked. "Buck's a family friend, right?"
"My dad's at work. He's a firefighter," Christopher replied, rather delighted with his new friend. She didn't look twice at his crutches or make any sort of comment on his disability. She talked like he was just another kid and it was wonderfully refreshing. His smile faltered and grew sad and Trixie slowed as she noticed it. "My mom's in heaven."
"Oh…" Trixie deflated slightly, now regretting asking. She tried to steer the conversation away by distracting the other. "Both of my parents are detectives. Lucifer is my mom's partner. He's the devil, but he's really nice and he gives me chocolate cake!"
Christopher's smile grew again and he brightened, "Do you think we can get cake later?"
"If we ask nicely or he wants something from us," Trixie replied. "Like if we annoy him and say we'll stop once he promises cake. Lucifer doesn't lie so anything he says is the truth! Watch this!" Trixie stopped walking for a moment and turned back to where Lucifer and Buck were talking, "Lucifer, what did you let me paint on your cheek a few game nights ago when we last did monopoly?"
Lucifer spluttered at that, not missing the devious look in Trixie's eyes. "I… You…"
"What was it?" Trixie prodded him with a wide grin.
Seeing the girl wouldn't let it go, Lucifer finally sighed heavily and mumbled, "A sparkly pink unicorn."
The devil scowled as the other three all laughed in amusement. He crossed his arms with a small huff, trying to convince himself that he'd rather be somewhere else yet he couldn't quite bring himself to really wish it. He'd never admit it and would instead dodge the question, but Lucifer found himself to be enjoying the moment with two children and his old friend.
Buck slung an arm around his shoulders with a grin, "Aw, the wild club owner's been domesticated."
"I most certainly have not," Lucifer objected. "Just… settled slightly."
"Slightly, sure," Buck joked. "How's working with a detective?"
"Delightful mostly," Lucifer replied, missing the sass in Buck's voice. "Solving murders and catching criminals. It's exciting. And I don't have to do any of the paperwork."
Buck laughed at that and nodded.
The end of the pier was less crowded than the rest of it, a few more families also looking at the water. Buck helped Christoper up to stand on one of the empty benches to look out over the ocean while the firefighter held the back of his shirt as a precaution. Trixie did the same, Lucifer beside her after deciding it would be very bad to lose the detective's offspring.
He then decided it would be a good idea to let said detective know everything was going alright; Chloe had not been completely alright with Lucifer taking Trixie out. Oh, she trusted him with her daughter, yes, she just didn't completely trust that he knew enough to keep his… Lucifer-ness in check around the young girl.
Getting Trixie's attention, and the attention of Buck and Christopher, Lucifer stepped back and took a picture of the three, all smiling and waving at the camera. With permission from Buck and Christopher, the devil sent the picture to Chloe and pocketed his phone again once he was sure it was delivered.
"So why aren't you at work?" Lucifer questioned the firefighter. "You said you'd healed after the pulmonary embolism deal."
Buck frowned at the reminder but answered, "I quit. The blood thinners apparently would have had me on light duty and I can't work with a desk job, Luce. That's not who I am."
"You're a firefighter." Lucifer smiled sympathetically. "I could pull a few strings, call in a few favours?"
"I can't ask you to do that for me," Buck said.
Lucifer only waved a hand dismissively, "But I'd do it anyway, Evan. It's what friends are for, hmm?"
"I guess…" Buck hesitated then sighed softly. "Luce, I'm not gonna get back to work through favours. I'm going by the rules."
"And if that doesn't work, you come to me," Lucifer's voice was practically an order. "I won't have you going to some sleazy lawyer or other."
A frown crossed Buck's lips. "Lawyer, why would I need a lawyer?"
"No idea but you're not going to one."
Buck gave the devil a confused look but nodded. "Fine."
"Lucifer…" Lucifer's attention was redrawn to Trixie at her worried tone and he followed her gaze as she continued, "Isn't retreating water like that a sign of a tsunami?"
Lucifer's eyes widened as he realized she was right. "Oh Dad… What is he doing?! We need to go, now. Now, move!"
Alarmed, Buck pulled Christopher into his arms and followed after the devil, shouting a warning to the other families around them. A tall wave was building on the horizon and panic was beginning to set in.
"Oh for Dad's sake," Lucifer growled softly, "We'll never out run it. If I had my wings…"
"Lucifer, here!"
The devil looked over at that and saw Buck heading for one of the game booths. The firefighter quickly placed Christopher down and Lucifer did the same. The tsunami was fast approaching, alarm sirens blaring over frantic yells.
"Get down," Lucifer said, practically shoving Buck down next to Christopher. "And hold on tight to your urchin." Vaulting over the low wall of the booth, Lucifer wrapped his arms around Trixie and addressed all three others, "Now, this may sound insane but when we inevitably get separated, you can pray to me. Devil or not, I can still receive prayers. Just put your hands together and pray to me and I'll hear you. I can't respond but I'll hear and I will find you."
"Lucifer how could—"
"Trust me, Evan."
Buck swallowed thickly, his eyes meeting Lucifer's stern gaze. He nodded and clutched Christopher to his chest. There was the roar of water and then he couldn't breathe. Buck squeezed his eyes closed as his body was thrown and tossed by the raging waters toying with him. He was battered by debris and pain made itself known in a number of places on his body. Christopher's body was held tight against him as Buck risked striking out with one hand his legs in an effort to reach the surface.
It was cold. When he peeked his eyes open, Buck saw debris spinning around him. He was spinning too and could very well be swimming down instead of up. He had no way of knowing as he was thrown and tossed about beneath the surface.
It was dark. Water tugged at his clothes and his lungs were beginning to burn. Dark shapes flew along with him in the racing current, battering him as he tried to escape the current's hold. He was already tiring and the darkness seemed to seep into his vision, into his mind.
It was scary. Buck had no way of knowing what would happen. Could he fight the current and win? Would they drown? Would his own friends be the ones to find them, just more bodies among the pile? Panic raced in his blood and fear tightened his chest but he was not going to give up.
Then there was sunlight. A desperate, oxygen-starved gasp burst past Buck's lips as his head broke the surface of the water trying to pull him back down. Christopher gasped as well and realizing he may be holding the boy too tight, Buck loosened his grip slightly, taking a fistful of the young boy's shirt.
Buck flung a hand out, managing to wrap an arm around a utility pole as they were swept past it. His lungs burned and his breathing came in heavy pants but he was breathing. A strong current tried to pull Buck away, tried to sweep him away once again, but the firefighter would not be moved. Buck looked around, a stab of relief striking him as he saw a fire truck nearby. It wasn't completely submerged and it was heavy enough not to be moved easily by the current.
It would be safe.
"Hold on tight, Christopher," Buck grunted and with a deep inhale, he used his legs to push off the utility pole and strike out towards the truck.
It felt impossible. Buck kicked his legs furiously, his free arm adding more power to his stroke. It didn't feel like nearly enough to overcome the current yet he was getting closer. It was working. Buck heaved a sigh of relief as he reached the truck and heaved Christopher up then himself. He felt exhausted, his muscles burned and his breathing was heavy, but he couldn't relax. They weren't out of trouble yet.
Buck lay sprawled on top of the truck with Christopher next to him. The boy was panting and still and that stillness drew Buck's attention.
"You're calling Lucifer?" the firefighter panted as he saw the boy's hands in a praying position.
"He said we could," Christopher replied, "And Lucifer doesn't lie."
"No…" Buck hesitated, wondering if the club owner's supposed metaphors could possibly be true. "He doesn't…"
The devil couldn't exist, could he? That would mean everything was real. Heaven, hell, paradise and damnation. Angels, demons, God himself. What would that mean for Buck and his perception of the world around him? A soft groan passed his lips and he rubbed his temples. It was too chaotic to add an existential crisis on top of the pile.
"How… How do you just accept that?" Buck asked. "That everything is real?"
"It was all real before," Christopher replied. "I just didn't know. Doesn't change much, does it?"
"I… guess not…" Buck frowned, questioning how the boy was so… wise. "But if Lucifer's really the devil?"
Christopher smiled. "He gives Trixie chocolate cake and babysits her when her parents can't. How scary can the devil be?"
A soft chuckle passed Buck's lips. "Good point. I know Lucifer… I guess knowing he's exactly what he said he was shouldn't change much about him when he never tried to hide it."
"Is now really the best time for this?" Buck and Christopher looked over as Lucifer placed Trixie onto the top of the truck. "Thank you, Urchin Two, for informing me of this refuge."
Lucifer then pulled himself up, disappearing from view as he let his body collapse to the bottom of the truck's back. Buck sat up from the higher platform of the cab and saw the devil—really, the devil himself—sprawled out and panting. Guess he wasn't that scary and evil really.
"You ever experience a tsunami before?"
"When I had my wings and could fly over it," Lucifer replied. "Immortal and invulnerable or not, disasters like this are a pain. I now regret cutting them off."
"Isn't that body mutilation?"
"Hmm, didn't stop me."
A soft laugh passed Buck's lips. He and Christopher crawled down to join the other pair. Lucifer pushed himself up and pulled out his phone, disappointed to find it waterlogged and cracked. He debated praying to Amenadiel but decided against it, not wanting to deal with his pompous brother on top of everything else. He didn't need another 'return to hell or else' talk.
Instead the devil settled for answering divine-related questions and complaining when Buck insisted on letting others join them on the fire truck. They didn't need more company, what was wrong with that? Apparently saving others outweighed personal comfort in a natural disaster and Lucifer made his opinion known until Trixie shut up him with a look.
Great. Just great. Caught in a tsunami and not even allowed to only have his friends—people that didn't annoy him with whines of self pity or hopelessness—as company. Could it get worse?
•••
Apparently yes, it could get worse.
Lucifer felt panic rise in his throat as he scanned the rushing water. The same rushing water his two urchins had just disappeared into. Hold on…
Since when were they his urchins? He barely knew them! He didn't like children either! Who knew where they'd been? Yet the devil liked those two children. The devil liked children. Lucifer would be sure he'd gained a concussion if mortal material couldn't harm him without Chloe around. Unless someone else was making him vulnerable…
Lucifer tried punching the metal beneath him and when he felt no pain over what he normally felt, he decided that no, he was not vulnerable at the moment.
"Wha— Evan!" The devil just barely managed to grab the firefighter before he could dive off the truck. "What are you doing?!"
Buck's eyes were wide in panic and he pushed at Lucifer's hands on him. "I have to find them, Lucifer! I can't lose Christopher and I won't lose Trixie! Now let go!"
"And what are you hoping to accomplish by diving into rapid water like that?" Lucifer returned incredulously. "There's no sign of where they went and you could just get yourself hurt. You're on blood thinners aren't you? No, you're staying right here with me until we have a plan, which believe me, is not something I ever imagined saying or doing."
"Luce, what if…" Buck swallowed tightly, letting his hands fall from trying to push the celestial away. "What if we're too late? We need to find them."
"And we will. We will, I promise," Lucifer said softly. He pulled the man to his chest, holding him tightly. "We'll find them."
Buck swallowed again and nodded. He let himself relax slightly in Lucifer's arms, the warmth the devil gave a nice and rather familiar comfort.
"Excuse me." The two looked over at the woman's voice and she sheepishly continued, "You two make a cute couple. I'm sure those children are well looked after."
Buck felt Lucifer tense at that, unsure of how to reply and then the devil was gone, letting himself simply fall over the edge of the truck and into the water.
"We're…" Buck spluttered, his cheeks red. "We're not a couple, he's just a friend. All three of them are just friends."
And without waiting for a reply, Buck dove after Lucifer.

Chloe was terrified.
Ella had just shown her news of the tsunami that hit Santa Monica Pier over two hours previously. The same pier her daughter and her partner were at. The picture Lucifer had sent her was sent only five minutes before the tsunami hit, they were certainly caught in it. What if they were dead? What if they were only seriously injured and now dying painfully waiting for help that may not find them in time?
Chloe clenched her jaw, trying not to show her panic. This was her fault. She was the one who insisted Lucifer take Trixie out to the pier and now they could both be hanging between life and death.
"Hey hey hey," Ella didn't miss the fear in her friend's eyes. "They'll be alright. They'll both be found alive or they'll both be happy in heaven. It's not your fault, Chloe."
"They wouldn't have been there if it weren't for me," Chloe argued, her voice much quieter than usual. "Ella, if they're hurt or dead, it's because of me. I might've sent my daughter and my partner to their deaths."
"There's no way you could have known a freaking tsunami would hit the pier," Ella replied, her hands on her hips. "It is not your fault Decker. Now let's go searching."
Chloe frowned. "Searching?"
Ella, already having walked a few steps away, came hurrying back with her own frown. "Searching for Trixie and Lucifer, I already cleared it with the lieutenant, we're off for the rest of the day. She said she could make an exception since you're one of the best detectives and there's nothing on the homicide plate right now, plus I think she likes Lucifer in a fond way. Now are you coming or not, Decker?"
Startled, Chloe nodded. She gathered her things hurriedly and almost ran after Ella as the woman left the precinct. She was led to Ella's car and climbed into the passenger seat without complaint. Ella got into the driver's side, throwing her own purse into the backseat.
"Ella." The woman looked at Chloe, who continued, "Thank you for this."
Ella smiled, "Of course. I'm worried too. So, where do we start?"
•••
Trixie had no idea where she was.
She luckily had Christopher with her, having been holding on to him and him to her when they fell from the fire truck, and they didn't let go as they were thrown by the water, but that didn't change the fact they were completely lost.
There were houses around them so they must have been far enough away from the pier. And that meant they were on their own for now. Lucifer couldn't reach them if he couldn't find them and both her parents were working. She did know both of her parents' phone numbers though so if they weren't completely without hope if they could find a working phone.
"Are you alright?" Trixie asked, pushing herself to her feet from where she and Christopher had been sitting and regaining their bearings.
The boy nodded. "Yeah. I lost my crutches and glasses though."
"That's fine," Trixie replied. "Well, not fine but I can help you! Did you call Lucifer when I wasn't looking?"
"I thought it would be best for you to do it since you know him better," Christopher said. "And you can see any signs properly."
Trixie nodded. "Alright. Then just hang on a minute."
After an 'okay' from Christopher, Trixie brought her hands together close to her chest and closed her eyes. She focused on reaching Lucifer and prayed.
Dear Lucifer. Christopher and I are together and we're alright, just a few bruises. We have no idea where we are though, there are a lot of houses though and I can't see any street signs. I'll tell you when we start moving if we see any or if we find any other people. I think we're going to try and find other people or a phone so I can call Mommy or Daddy and Christopher can call his dad. Amen. Wait, do I end with amen with you or is that God's thing? I'll have to ask when you can actually respond.
Trixie parted her hands, hoping that would end the prayer. Otherwise Lucifer would be constantly getting her thoughts and she wasn't sure how to turn it off.
"Ready?" Christopher asked.
Trixie nodded. "Ready."
She stood and helped her friend to his feet and they started off. Christopher's arm was slung around Trixie's shoulders as they went and they talked together to pass the time. It was rather slow; they were tired and thirsty and there was no one else around. Trixie wasn't ready to give up though, not until she found Lucifer or Buck or her parents.
"—And then Lucifer made the bully scream and she was never mean to me again!"
Christopher smiled, "Did he show them his devil eyes?"
"I asked him later and he said he did," Trixie replied. "But really, your dad got the grenade out of the man's leg and it didn't blow up?"
"No. He said it was scary though 'cause if he did it wrong, they all would have died."
"Wow… Being a firefighter sounds scary. Maybe even more scary than a detective, my parents get into a lot of trouble sometimes."
"My dad does too, like every day!"
The two dissolved into a fit of laughter and giggles, a fit that was soon halted as a voice rang out:
"Hello?! Children?!"
Christopher shared a look with Trixie before they both yelled back. With a burst of renewed energy, the two jogged and stumbled forwards to where they now saw a trio of people up ahead coming from an adjacent street. It was a short woman who had seen them and called out and she caught the pair as they finally tripped and nearly fell. The other two, a man and his teenage son, watched and helped easeTrixie to sit on the curbside.
"Are you alright?" the woman asked, her accent noticeable and her expression concerned.
Christopher nodded, "Just tired."
On the curbside, Trixie was relieved to rest her legs for a while. How long had they been out there? It was dark out so that meant a number of hours at least. Lucifer and Buck must be worried sick, her parents too if they knew.
"Do you have a phone?" Trixie asked hopefully.
The woman shook her head. "None of us have a working one. We are trying to find an emergency shelter and our loved ones. Come with us."
Trixie shared a look with Christopher and nodded. "Thank you."
And with a small groan, Trixie got up and they were walking once again. Christopher was shivering and Trixie wished she had some sort of sweater or blanket she could give him and apparently the woman thought the same. She draped her own maroon sweater around the boy and heaved him up into her arms, shushing his protests about not wanting to burden her.
"Who're you searching for?" the man asked. "How'd you get caught up in the tsunami?"
"We were at the pier," Trixie replied. Her mother warned her about strangers but did that still apply in the middle of a crisis? "We got swept away from the ones who were with us, Lucifer and Buck. We're trying to find them."
"Well, maybe they'll be at an emergency shelter."
Trixie nodded before suddenly remembering to pray to the devil and inform him of this new development. He would want to know so he and Buck could find them.
Dear Lucifer. Christopher and I have found some more people who got caught up in the tsunami. We're going to an emergency shelter somewhere. I still can't see anything recognizable… Wait, there are police lights up ahead. They're bound to have some way to call Mommy and then she can help me call you!
Trixie forced her legs to speed up and she hurried forwards, the others close behind her upon seeing the squad of police cruisers. Officers milled around the place and Trixie went to the first one she came across.
"Excuse me?" she asked hopefully.
The officer, a nice-looking woman, looked startled seeing the young girl but she recovered quickly. "Yes? Are you looking for someone you got separated from?"
Trixie nodded. "We all are. Could you help at all?"
"We're doing all we can to find everyone," the woman replied. "If you head to the closest emergency shelter—"
"My wife is missing," the man said. He sounded upset and Trixie couldn't blame him. "We need to find her."
"Hey, everything alright, Suze?"
Trixie looked towards the new voice and brightened instantly, "Sergeant Grant!"
"Beatrice Espinoza?" Athena raised a brow and frowned. "What are you doing out here? Didn't your mother's eccentric partner take you out for a day at… Oh. You got caught up in the tsunami and got separated, didn't you."
The young girl nodded despite it being a statement. "We're trying to find Lucifer and Buck. Do you have a phone I can use to call my mom?"
"I do," Athena said. She took out said phone. "You said Lucifer and Buck…?"
Trixie nodded with a grin now, "We ran into him and Christopher at the pier! He's really fun and Christopher is great! Oh yeah, we need to call his dad too!"
Athena frowned in confusion and worry. Trixie turned just as the woman carrying Christopher managed to pull the hood of the sweater off his head to reveal his face. The boy blinked tiredly, having been nearly asleep.
"Chris, this is one of my mom's friends!"
The sergeant's eyes were wide now, "Christopher. Oh, Buck's probably worried sick if he was with you."
"You know him?" Trixie asked curiously as Athena handed her the phone, a call to Chloe already dialing.
"I'm married to the fire captain of Buck's station," Athena replied.
Trixie gave a small 'huh' before putting the phone to her ear with a thankful smile to the sergeant.
"Hello?" came Chloe's voice.
"Mommy!"
There was an audible gasp. "Trixie. Where are you, Monkey? Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Trixie replied. "Just really tired. Mommy, Christopher and I got separated from Lucifer and Buck in the tsunami. We're going to an emergency shelter now though."
"Alright…" Chloe's voice was worried. "Christopher and Buck, are they the two that were in the picture Lucifer sent me earlier?"
Trixie smiled. "Yeah, they're really nice! I'll be okay, Mommy, Sergeant Grant is here and she's still working but I'll be okay. We still need to call Christopher's dad, he's a firefighter, so I'll see you soon."
"Okay." There was a short pause and a soft breath like someone steadying themselves. "Just be careful, Trix. Promise me you'll be careful."
"I will be, Mommy. I love you."
"I love you too, Monkey. I'll see you soon."
Trixie smiled softly and pulled the phone from her ear and handed it back to Athena. "Thanks. Can you call Christopher's dad?"
"Not Eddie specifically but I can call the captain. I'm sure Eddie will be nearby."
•••
Buck was exhausted. Hours they'd been walking through debris and bodies, trying to free anyone trapped that they came across. The firefighter was tired and he just wanted to lie down and rest but he wouldn't, not until they found Christopher and Trixie. Lucifer on the other hand didn't really seem tired at all. Which is how Buck ended up being carried on the devil's back, the devil who wouldn't take no for an answer.
"Oh wonderful," Lucifer mumbled suddenly and Buck forced his eyes open and blinked blearily.
"What now? They find somebody?"
"Only the best police sergeant in the LAPD," Lucifer replied. "Where's that emergency shelter again? It's near enough, isn't it?"
Buck frowned softly and nodded, his cheek pressed against Lucifer's shoulder. "Should be up ahead and left I think. They found Athena?"
"Oh, you know her as well?" Lucifer chuckled lightly, "Quite a formidable woman, isn't she?"
"Yeah. I was joking though, I didn't think you knew her. Should've known though, working with the police and everything…"
"She's delightful if not a bit scary," Lucifer replied. "I've taken to slipping my cell number in her pocket or other places for mere entertainment, no ulterior motives this time. I believe the last one was in her gun holster."
A soft laugh passed Buck's lips, "Man, that sounds like suicide, annoying Athena Grant."
Lucifer chuckled in return, "Well, annoying Detective Douche does get boring after a while. Now let's go and find our urchins."
•••
"Athena."
"Bobby, is the rest of the team around?"
The fire captain frowned slightly and looked around the shelter. "Yeah, we're at the emergency shelter. Why?" He pulled the phone away slightly and shouted, "Guys, over here for a second!"
"What is it, Cap?" Chimney asked in confusion as he, Hen and Eddie came over quickly.
"Athena needs us for something," Bobby replied, he held the phone out and informed the sergeant, "You're on speaker, we're all here."
"Good," was Athena's reply. "You're all gonna want to hear this."
"Is something wrong?" Hen asked.
"Well, even more wrong?" Chimney added, gesturing to the tsunami victims surrounding them.
His words got a few amused and disapproving looks from the other three but Athena continued before any of them could say anything.
"Buck and Christopher were on the pier when the tsunami hit," Athena said grimly, and just like that, four hearts dropped.
"Are you sure?" Eddie asked desperately. His eyes were already wide in panic and Hen grabbed his arm to help ground him. "Athena, are you sure?"
"Well unless there's a boy who looks exactly like Christoper that I just sent to the emergency shelter," Athena replied. "I'm sure, Eddie. He's alive." Nobody missed the long exhale that passed Eddie's lips and Athena went on. "He's with a new friend, Beatrice, or Trixie, Espinoza and a woman named Alicia. Buck and the man who was accompanying Trixie are apparently also on their way to the shelter though I'm not sure how the kids could know that when neither man has a functioning phone. Just warning you though, Lucifer's an acquired taste though I'm told he and Buck are old friends."
"Alright," Bobby said, "Thanks, Athena."
"One more thing," the woman said. "Trixie's mom Detective Chloe Decker is also on her way. Now I have no idea who'll arrive first so keep your eyes open."
"Got it."
And then the call ended. Eddie instantly let out a gasp and his legs nearly gave out on him. Hen and Bobby quickly steadied him and helped lower him to the empty bed nearby.
"They're alive," Bobby whispered, "They're alive, Eddie, it's alright."
Eddie nodded and swallowed thickly yet he couldn't get rid of the tight feeling in his chest. "What if they weren't though, Cap? I'm the one who told Buck to go out with Christopher. They could have both been killed."
"But they weren't," Hen said softly. "Buck and Christopher are both strong, it'd take more than a tsunami to take them out."
"Excuse me." The team turned to see two women, one with black hair, the other with blonde. The dark-haired woman continued, "Did I overhear you say Buck and Christopher?"
Bobby frowned in confusion but nodded. "Yeah." He then noticed the police badge at the blonde's hip and guessed, "Detective Decker?"
The woman nodded. "And aren't you Athena's husband?"
Bobby nodded again and extended a hand, "Nice to meet you, Detective." Chloe accepted the handshake with a smile and Bobby turned to the other woman. "And you are?"
Ella grinned, "Ella Lopez, forensic scientist."
The fire captain was startled by the hug the scientist attacked him with but he quickly gathered his bearings enough to awkwardly hug back, shooting a glare at the grins of his teammates. When Ella pulled back, she moved on to the other firefighters and then it was Bobby who was grinning.
"She's a hugger huh?" Bobby said, looking at the detective next to him.
Chloe chuckled and nodded, "Yeah. She's an amazing friend though."
"I can already see that," Bobby replied. "And—"
"Oh my god, Lucifer!"
Ella's shout cut the captain off and drew everyone's attention to where a tall, dark-haired man was coming into the shelter and looking around. Hearing her shout, Lucifer looked over, his expression lighting up and he came stumbling over.
"Miss Lopez, what a surprise," he said, trying not to look as tired as he really felt. "I didn't think I'd see you here. The detective and Evan's team, yes, but not you."
"I was helping Decker search," Ella replied. She became aware of the man Lucifer was carrying and paled slightly, "Oh my god, is he dead?"
Lucifer in turn became aware of the firefighters' wide eyes and hurriedly said, "No, no, of course not! I would never let harm come to Evan if I could stop it. No, Evan's just absolutely exhausted himself in searching and helping others so I insisted he let me carry him and he fell asleep. Which reminds me, he's on blood thinners and has a couple nasty cuts and scratches he should get looked at."
"You carried him?" Chimney repeated in surprise as the four firefighters came to help ease the sleeping Buck down onto the bed Eddie had previously been sitting on. "How far? Buck's not exactly easy to carry."
"A dozen blocks or so?" Lucifer replied. He stumbled slightly and Chloe and Ella helped steady him. "Hard to say. Are the urchins here yet?"
"Sit down," Chloe pushed the devil down next to Buck. "And not yet but how could you know they were coming here, Lucifer? Unless you've just been ignoring our calls, your phone doesn't work."
"The urchins have been praying to me and letting me know where they are and where they're going," Lucifer replied, ignoring the confused looks he got from the firefighters and the slight, disbelieving huff from Chloe. Now that he was off his feet, he was really starting to feel his own exhaustion. It wasn't exactly something he was familiar with, it took a lot to tire him out, but a lot had happened. "How's Evan doing? You're paramedics, right?"
"Chimney and I are," Hen replied as the two looked over the sleeping man. "He'll be fine with some rest."
"Hen?" Buck's voice was a quiet mumble as his eyelids fluttered weakly. "Chim?"
"Yeah it's us, Buck," Chimney said softly. "You're getting taken care of."
"Christopher?"
"Not here yet," Eddie replied. He grasped his best friend's hand tightly. "And don't you dare try apologizing. I know you did your best to keep him safe and he's safe now and on his way. You did nothing wrong, Buck, and you probably saved his life."
"This might sting," Hen informed as she began dabbing gently at the scratches across Buck's face with a damp cloth.
Buck grimaced and tried to shy away from her only to be held still by Chimney. "Aw, Chim!"
"You should get checked out too," Ella said, snapping her fingers at Lucifer.
"I'm fine," Lucifer replied insistently. "Just tired. Without the detective there, I wasn't vulnerable at all so I'm perfectly fine."
"Let a professional confirm that," Chloe returned, her arms crossed.
"I don't need medical help!" Lucifer whined. "Evan, tell them!"
Buck looked over and shrugged half-heartedly. "Never saw any blood or pain on him."
"See? Perfectly fine!"
Chimney poked him and Lucifer flinched in surprise, making the paramedic smile in amusement, "Just a quick once-over?"
Grumbling, Lucifer nodded with a long sigh and let Chimney begin to look over him while Hen finished up with Buck's cuts.
"What happened?" Eddie asked. His voice was curious and almost desperate. "What happened out there, Buck?"
"Uh, we were at the pier, ran into Lucifer and Trixie, tsunami hit, and we ended up getting separated," Buck said tiredly. "I'll explain more later, Ed. 'M just really tired right now."
Eddie nodded, "Right, sorry… I just… You're sure you're mostly okay?"
"I feel like shit," Buck mumbled. "Is it possible for humans to hibernate?"
"No," Lucifer replied. "I knew a few who tried a few centuries after the Cain and Abel fiasco. Didn't work very well for them."
Buck seemed to become more awake at that and then groaned softly, "Tomorrow I'm coming to Lux and you're explaining everything."
"Hmm, what's in it for me?" Lucifer replied, only half-serious.
"Is my company not enough anymore?"
Lucifer smiled rather slyly. "Oh, well if I remember, your company was most delightful."
Confused, Eddie looked between the two. "Wait, you…?"
Buck blushed rather heavily while Lucifer smirked. Chloe and Ella both rolled their eyes while Eddie, Bobby, Chimney and Hen all studied the devil again.
"Not— Not recently," Buck spluttered. "Just a year or two ago, before Abby. After that we became just friends."
"Mmm, rather unfortunately if you ask me," Lucifer added, only to get a swat from Chloe. He threw an indignant scowl at her before movement behind her caught his eye. "Urchin!"
"Lucifer!" Trixie lit up as she saw the group.
She and Alicia hurried over, Christopher still carried in the woman's arms. Trixie practically threw herself into Lucifer's arms and as he was still sitting, the young girl got her arms around his neck. Lucifer tenses instantly, his eyes wide yet he soon found himself relaxing and hesitantly hugging her back.
Christopher on the other hand was set down on his feet and allowed to stumble into his father's arms as said father profusely thanked Alicia. She smiled, said both children were delightful, then excused herself to look for her own family. Buck pushed himself upright and sat next to the devil, a smile on his lips as he watched both Lucifer and Trixie, and Eddie and Christopher.
"Did you get my prayers?" Trixie asked as she pulled away from Lucifer in favour of hugging her mom.
Lucifer nodded. "To answer that earlier question, 'amen' is Dad's thing. I'm fine with a simple 'goodbye' or 'the end.'"
"Huh…" Trixie tilted her head then turned her attention to Chloe, "Mommy, when can we go home?"
"Soon, Monkey," Chloe replied. She looked over her daughter, searching for any sort of injury. "Does anywhere hurt at all?"
"Just bruises," Trixie said, letting Chloe look her over with a soft sigh.
"Buck was amazing!" Christopher said with a grin. He was now sat tucked up against Buck's side, the man's arm around his shoulders. "He saved all these people and we were sitting on top of this fire truck!"
"Wait, was it the one-thirty-six?" Bobby asked. "We found that truck and the group of people there."
Buck gave a small smile at that. "After Luce and I jumped off no doubt."
"Yes, that wasn't particularly enjoyable," Lucifer said with a scowl.
"You're the one who jumped first," Buck returned.
"After a stranger implied we're together as a couple."
Another light blush covered Buck's cheeks at that and he scowled.
"Hey Lucifer?" Trixie asked, poking his shoulder.
The devil looked at her curiously, "Yes, Urchin?"
"Let's never do this again," Trixie said seriously. "Not unless you get your wings back."
"I second that," Christopher piped up with a giggle.
Buck lazily raised a hand, "Third that."
Lucifer chuckled lightly, "Then it's a deal."
None of them felt like explaining to the confused others.
