Severus sat at the Slytherin table along side Regulus waiting for the Leaving feast to be over with. He was entirely over being at Hogwarts this year. Only two weeks had passed since his falling out with Lily and it was becoming clear to him that she was indeed NOT going to forgive him. No matter that he didn't really believe that she was any less of witch because her parents were muggles.
Granted the only one that knew how he really felt about this was Regulus. They had been relatively close friends since part way through Severus' second year, Regulus's first year. It had taken some time for the friendship to develop.
They eventually sort of bonded over mutual hatred for the behavior of Regulus's brother Sirius.
Regulus on the other hand did believe that this fact of parentage made Lily less of a witch. He also however respected his friends feelings for the girl.
As soon as the feast was over they both stood up, glanced at each other. As if to say "Let's go, NOW!". Promptly walking down to the thestrals, and then onto the Express.
They were eager to get on and find a compartment to avoid certain gryffindors.
Meanwhile 20 years from then.
Hermione Granger was walking to the Headmasters Office. Professor Dumbledor wanted to talk to her, and get her input on an idea he had for her.
She felt somewhat nervous as she rode the Gargoyle up to the office. After all it was usually Harry the professor took any kind of interest in. Not her.
She lifted her hand to the door to knock on it, just then it swung open.
"Do come in Miss Granger, thank you for coming so quickly." Came the genial tone of Headmaster Dumbledore.
She hesitated just a moment, she hated her nerves when it came to adults who had authority over her.
As she walked in, Albus gestured to the rather large, and comfy looking Gryffindor red wingback chair. It reminded her of the recliners her parents had at home. Though she rather doubted it reclined.
"How are you healing up, Miss Granger. I know it's been just a few weeks since the Department of Mysteries incident?"
"Umm, Just fine sir, thank you." She squirmed in her chair a bit. Still feeling uncomfortable but trying to make herself relax. " I am still taking some potions though, as I am still a bit sore."
He smiled familiarly at the young Gryffindor girl.
"How long do you still have left to take those potions, dear?"
"Oh, umm, just another week. I do feel a lot better then I did that first day."
"Count yourself lucky you silenced the man, dear girl. That particular spell has been known to cause much more damage, and in some cases death."
She smiled rather tightly at this. She already knew this of course as she had asked Madam Pomfrey about it as soon as she was able.
"I bet you're wondering why I have called you to my office."
She straightened up at this, preparing to listen closely, "Actually yes sir!"
"I had wondered dear, if you'd be willing to go on a mission for me. With your old time-turner?"
Her face dropped at this, messing with time made her nervous. Especially considering her experience with it, "Sir, I gave Professor McGonagall my time turner back at the end of third year."
" Of course I recall Miss Granger, I still have it here in my desk," He bent slightly to swing open a drawer, Then turned that one slightly, deliberately, then another drawer popped out the side of his desk, where she swore there were no signs of the desk even having a drawer there moments ago. There on top was her time turner. The drawer hugged it really.
"wha-" She croaked out and cleared her throat and tried again, "What did you have in mind for me doing with it sir?"
" I would like you to give my past self a letter, dear. That is all, simple really. Inside it I will give myself instructions for your return."
Something felt off about the request but she wasn't sure what, "When would you like this to occur, Sir?"
"Well you said you had a week of potions left to take?," She nodded, "How about three days after that then? That leaves you a couple of extra days just in case. And it's two days before The leaving feast is set to take place."
"Can- Can I have some time to think on it?"
"Yes, yes, my dear, of course. I would maybe not share the information with the youngest Mr. Weasley or Mr. Potter. I know that Mr. Potter at least is still feeling quite a lot of grief over Sirius Black."
" Of course sir, I understand."
Albus rose to see her out the door, and she stood up to follow suit.
"Please do let me know your decision, at your own discretion. Miss Granger."
And she rode the Gargoyle back down from his office.
Her mind was spinning furiously, wondering what that letter would pertain. Was this really safe? Messing with time had the potential to cause catastrophe after all. Could it really be as simple as that? Just a letter? If she learned anything this year from the pain his actions had caused Harry, she learned that Dumbledore could sacrifice people for the greater good. But certainly he wouldn't do that to a fifteen year old girl?
However, at the end of the day, she knew she would do what he asked. He wouldn't ask if it wasn't important to the war right? She would let him know tomorrow after breakfast.
Still she couldn't shake the feeling in the pit of her stomach that this was most definitely NOT a good idea.
A/N It's a first chapter and this feels like a natural end to a chapter. Other chapters should be longer. I thought I'd try my hand at a time-turner fic. This one will have a bit of a twist in the middle. I have no Beta if anyone would life to volunteer? I'm not entirely sure about this title.
