Chapter 1: Runaways

"Everyone is looking for you, you know." Mikasa said, making her way to Eren at the refuge camp. He said nothing to that, and instead change the subject to the refugee's predicament. He acknowledge how that these people have gone through the same thing as them when they lost their home when they were only ten years old. It was even worse for Mikasa since she lost her home and both of her parents when she was nine, and then got adopted into the Yeager family only to lose them again the next year. She had lost her family and home twice and she is only 18.

"Mikasa... why is it that you care so much about me?" Eren ask out of the blue, he turn to look at properly at her.

"Huh" was all Mikasa manage to say, because what the hell was going. Eren never ask her anything like that before and they were just talking about the people in the refugee camp, and now he's bombarding her with this loading question. Mikasa is force to look up at him, when did he get so tall, there was a time she was taller than him but now he's a good head taller than her.

"Is it because I saved you when we were kids? Or is it because I'm family?" he continues blushing ask said it as if he is embarrass of the question.

"Huh? Huh?" Mikasa replies as if her brain was malfunctioning at the moment. She couldn't believe what was happening. She just continue to stare dumbfounded at the guy that she has loved for almost a decade.

" What are we?" Eren ask with anxious but equally hopeful eyes. Mikasa get the jest of the nature of the question, at first she was confuse, why would Eren of all people ask why she cares about him. Eren saved her when she was a kid and has been by her side since then, he's also aside from Armin the only family she has left. It should be obvious to anyone why she would care so much and want to protect him at every turn, he means everything to her.

"You're... family" she finally answer, that was a safe one and that what she always said when people ask, technically she's right they are family. If the traitors has never broke down the wall, they would have been brought up as siblings, she was technically adopted by his family and Grisha and Carla never treats her different. Grisha evens refers to her as his daughter, it has taken sometimes to realize that her love for Eren was not the familial kind.

The hope in his eyes is gone and he seems like he return to his shell after hearing her answer. "So we are family and that is the reason you care about me so much."

"Do you not see me as your family? You care about me too, why do you care about me then Eren?" She is blushing even harder and trying to maintain eye contact.

"I do care about you more than anyone actually and do see you as my family but I don't think it's the same way you see it." it was his turn to blush now. He already said more than he plans on to say, and he hope she does not figures he out.

They are interrupted by Ramzi's guardian, he invited them into his home and they promise to go in a minute.

"I think we should go inside Mikasa."

"Eren I'm not sure why you ask me that question, I want you to know that you mean everything to me and I would follow to the deepest part of hell, I want to stay by you side forever. You should understand that by now."

" I only have only four years left to live, and you have a very long life ahead of you. I always thought that after everything is over with the titans that we could go back and live a peaceful life but fate has other plans and it not one that I can fight my way through."

"What if we can have that peaceful life, what if we run away?" Mikasa did not what she was playing at, after listening to Eren's explanation, maybe the only way to save themselves and have any semblance of peace before Eren die is if they run away or Eren will be fighting till his last breath and they will never have another chance. They both look stun at her words. "I know it sound crazy"

"It is crazy, so we should run before the others find us. Are you sure you won't regret this?" Eren said while grabbing her hand and interlacing their fingers. She shakes her head, and they start running towards the unknown just the two of them hand in hand.

The journey to Switzerland took two days by train, good thing they both still had their allowance with them at the time, and Mikasa being Kiyome's favorite has even more money than the rest of them. They walk holding hands as if they are afraid the other would suddenly disappear. The make their way into the forest, Mikasa had no idea where they were, she just trust Eren's judgment.

"We'll build our little house here. I saw this place in a memory, it's seems fitting and is also very far away from everything. Everything we need we can go buy in the village so we won't be completely isolated." Eren explain as they reach a clearing are in the forest, the place reminds Mikasa of her old home, where she lives with her parents.

"It's perfect Eren." They set the things they bought at the village's marketplace on the side, Mikasa lie down on the grass. They run away with nothing but the clothes on their back so they will need to buy more things for their house but first they need to actually build the house.

"I should probably start looking for trees to build the house." Eren said to Mikasa after joining her on the ground. She sighs as a response, she stares at his face and then at blue sky and she decided she will never regret her decision to run away with Eren. They nap on the grass since they barely got any sleep while traveling on the train.
