Beginnings

Hermes knew it wouldn't be long now. The players had taken the stage, the band was getting in tune, and soon the old tale would begin once more.

In the darkness of the crossroads of time, when he was everywhere and nowhere at once, the messenger god readied himself, braced himself, before the lights snapped on and he strode out to welcome the crowd. Soon, he knew, he'd witness the beginning of love at first sight, when Orpheus met Eurydice and set their story irrevocably in motion.

The tragedy looming ahead seemed so far away, and Hermes couldn't help but smile as the young lovers met for the first time, a spark blooming between them immediately.

The start was set in stone, and so was the rest, but maybe this time—Fates willing—the ending would turn out all right.
