Chapter 1: Origins
It was a storming night when a spirit was released from the Ori Tree. Flashes of lightning illuminated the area, and with a large CRACK! of thunder, a new leaf was released. Lookout Spirits usually tracked the Spirit Leaf when they were released, but no one was looking because of the storm. Everyone was hiding away and did not see the Leaf as it floated away. The little Leaf fluttered about at the mercy of the raging wind, and was about to land on the ground when a gust blew it through some thorny vines. The Leaf dodged most of them, but still got 3 tiny cuts on each side of it.
The Leaf landed on a small hill, and with a flash of light it transformed into a small spirit curled into a small ball. It had 6 long, floppy ears, and a small, round, white face and a small nose. Along each of the cheeks were 3 jagged scars, uniform in length and size. He was of average height, and glowed a teal light around him. He opened his eyes, and looked around with dark blue eyes. He didn't have much strength, and so he barely lifted his head and looked around. He couldn't see anything in the dark, and the rain was cold. Not being able to do anything, he put his head down and went to sleep.
When a spirit is born, they need other spirits around them to maintain their light. Left alone, a spirit's light will diminish, and eventually go out. Lookouts had gotten every spirit, but they missed this one in the storm. The spirit longed for something to come, but it didn't have the energy to call out to alert anyone. He just sat there, its light dulling into a darker shade of blue.
Xul was wandering. He wanted to get away from the spirits for a time. Not that he didn't like them, he was just tired and wanted some alone time. Xul was a warrior spirit, and a very good one too. He was pretty popular, so he was always dealing with spirits. It got very tiring talking to people and signing pieces of bark, so he decided to walk off into the woods to clear his mind.
As he was walking along, Xul suddenly stopped. He saw a small hill, and on top of it was a small spirit. It was smaller than most, and its light was a dark blue. Xul realized that the lookouts must have missed the spirit, and it was close to dying. Xul dashed up on the spirit, lifting it into his arms. He traced the scars along its cheeks, wondering how this happened. The spirit felt cold, and Xul sensed the light leaving the spirit. He knew that the spirit didn't have long to live, but the healers might be able to bring this spirit back. Xul dashed as fast as he could, while safely carrying the spirit, getting back to the rest of the spirits. Everyone looked shocked when he stopped in front of the healer's hut and saw the small, dying spirit in his hands. He went immediately to the head healer, Ira, held the spirit out, and told her how he found the spirit. She took him in her arms, examined the small spirit and said, "We'll do the best we can, but we don't know if it'll survive. We've never had a spirit like this before, and so we will want to be as careful as we can be." Xul bid her farewell and returned to his home.
