Alice

Pain assaults every part of my body. My body is incapable of motion. My eyes no longer see clearly, nor do my ears hear clearly. And yet, as I feel my life slowly ebbing from my dying body, there is enough breath in me to focus on the man lying just a few feet away from me.

Uncas.

From that first moment, I thought he is and would be my destiny. To walk by my side for as long as life endures, the only man I will ever love. I thought I was wrong when Magua, cursed be his name forever, stabbed him before my eyes and sent him to his death at the bottom of a cliff. But now I see that is not so. Uncas is, and forever will be my destiny, only not in this life.

Slowly, with my dying breath, I inch closer to him, and I see that he is not dead yet. His eyes meet mine, and our hands move towards each other. I feel the warmth of his fingers as they meet mine, and I manage to utter three more words before my spirit departs my body.

"I love you".

Uncas

The woman I love lies but a few feet away from me. There's so much I wish to say, so much I wish I could tell her. But there is no more time. My strength is departing me, my spirit moments away from rising into the eternal. I'm sorry, I want to tell her. I'm sorry I failed to save you and that only death can reunite us. But I have not the strength for those words. Instead, I extend my hand towards her, until my fingers are clasping hers, our last embrace in this life.

Great Spirit, I pray silently. Grant me this final wish and let me be with her. Take her to the happy hunting grounds with me and let us be together as we could not be in this life. I ask for no more.

I hear Alice whisper her last words, just before my ears fail me and I feel my spirit flying free.

I love you, Alice.

The Great Spirit

I watch as the lives leave the bodies of the man and woman lying hand in hand beneath the great cliffs. I hear the prayers of my Mohican son as he makes his final wish, and I feel the timeless love between them. And now I watch as their spirits depart their mortal bodies and rise to walk into their final destiny.

I shall grant my son his last wish. To the happy hunting grounds shall they both go, where there is no more war or death or pain. As they could not be together in the human world, so shall they be together forever now. They shall run freely through the shining fields, and they shall laugh and dance hand in hand and never shall they know a moment's sadness again.

The Mohican man and the blonde-haired lady stand face to face in the shining meadows, beneath the canopy of trees and the light that shall never stop shining. They run into each other's arms, and how they laugh and cry as they kiss and embrace.

"You're here with me," Alice whispers.

"Yes," Uncas smiles. "Yes. The Great Spirit has heard my prayers, and here you are. Come, and let us walk into our new life."

Hand in hand, the lovers walk towards the light beckoning to them until they disappear over the horizon.

Hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed this single chapter story. I've always loved Alice and Uncas, and was so devastated to think they could never be together, so I decided to imagine what it would be like if they could be together in death.
