Instead of writing my mermay stuff I wrote this instead... whoops XD
But I came up with this idea on the spot and I just had to make all the cute feelings. Thanks to GhostHex for the title suggestion.
Noctis started out of his apartment window. He watched people walk around on the sideways, and cars drive down the streets. Everything was normal, yet there was a festiveness in the air. People were more joyous than usual as parties were held and fireworks were set off across the kingdom.
It was one of the few days in the year that Regis allowed for such a loud celebration. It was all for his son after all. He wanted to make sure that the people could celebrate their beloved prince on his very special day.
This time it was also a very special birthday; his 16th.
The people were really having a grand time celebrating his birthday. Honestly though, he really didn't care what the people did. Sure, it was nice to know that his people did care for him and celebrated his existence, but sometimes he felt like they just used it as an excuse to celebrate loudly.
On the other hand, people also loved showing their love and praises to the prince. He would receive countless gifts and fan mail from all who wanted to send him something. From cards, to artwork people made, to books, games and everything else under the sun, he would get it for his birthday.
It had always been this way as long as Noctis could remember. Even when it wasn't the public sending him gifts, the staff and his own father always showered him with so many gifts. He didn't really hate getting all of the gifts, but over the years he did grow a bit tired of it.
No one ever asked him what he wanted, they just gave him what they thought he would want.
Sure, toys and books were nice at first, some of them actually being things he wanted. But still… no one thought to ask first if he wanted this or that in the first place. He was always just given everything people thought he would enjoy.
But he never once spoke up about it.
He never told anyone that he didn't want this book, or that toy, or that he would rather have something else.
Being the prince he knew at an early age if he asked for something he would just get it right away. There would be no surprise or build up to getting a gift he always asked for cause he would be given it right then and there. Plus no one asked him ever what he wanted, so he saw no reason to start that up by this age.
So with that in mind, Noctis knew that today's birthday was going to be no different than the last. It would be the same old same old, but now with him being 16.
Suddenly his phone started ringing. It was playing a very distinctive chocobo theme, meaning it could only be one particular person calling.
With a smile, Noctis picked up the phone and hit the answer button. "Hey Prompto."
"Yo dude! I'm on my way to your apartment. But there's so many people walking all over!"
Noctis laughed. "Don't get trampled."
"Trying not to. Don't want your present to get crushed. That would be like, super bad!"
"Present?"
He had only known Prompto for a year now, and they had become quite close in their friendship. Still, Noctis hadn't expected anything from him. Prompto was the only one who befriended him, just to be his friend, not because he was the prince. Aside from the first moment they met, Prompto never called Noctis 'Prince Noctis' and it felt so good to hear just a relaxed and normal 'Noctis' or a 'Noct' for once in his life.
So to expect a present out of the blue, Noctis wasn't sure what to feel. He had never received a present from a friend before. Ignis and Gladio always got him presents, but it was just the same as the rest. They would assume what he wanted, never asking, and would just give something nice to him.
"Yeah a present. Cause y'know it's your birthday? Or is the entire town celebrating some other Noctis?"
"Yeah… guess I just didn't think about it. Just knock when you get here, okay?"
"Can do! See you soon Noct!"
When he ended the call, Noctis let out a sigh. He could feel the nervousness turning inside of him. He trusted Prompto to treat him like just a normal guy, but when it came to a present? What was Prompto going to do? Would he be like the rest and just assume what Noctis wanted?
"Probably a game or something," Noctis thought to himself. "Or maybe a framed picture of us, we did take one at the arcade recently. That wouldn't be so bad I guess…"
He waited a bit longer until he heard a knock at his door. The pattern was the same chocobo theme that he had heard on his phone. Chuckling, Noctis headed over to let Prompto in.
"Such a dork," Noctis muttered as he opened the door.
Prompto was standing there with a big red box in his hands, smiling widely. "Hey buddy! Also uh, you got like all these cards and flowers outside your door."
Looking down, Noctis saw what Prompto had described. With a sign he bent over to pick up everything. "Yeah I figured there would be more, sorry about that."
"More?" Prompto gasped. "You mean you already had a ton from before?"
Noctis closed the door after Prompto was inside and gave a nod. "I'm the prince, what do you expect?"
"Geeze, I think that's a bit of an overkill. You'll have your own mini flower shop in here soon enough," Prompto said, eyeing the pile of flowers already on the kitchen countertop.
"Bet I could make a profit from it then," Noctis said, smirking slightly.
"If you do I get 50%! Cause I made up the idea!" Prompto laughed.
Shaking his head, Noctis laughed. "Sure whatever. So what's in the box?"
"That!" Prompto declared as he placed the box carefully down on the floor. "Is for you to find out! Take a seat in front of the box and let's get this present reveal started!"
Noctis did as he was told as Prompto whipped out his phone. Noctis raised an eyebrow. "You're filming this?"
"Yeah, and?"
"You're not going to post it to ChocoTube are you?"
"No way, dude! I am just filming this for the memories. Now go ahead and open the box!"
With a shrug, Noctis looked down at the box. It wasn't wrapped, but the cardboard was red. All that it had really was a big bow on the top, keeping the top of the box loosely pushed down. Part of him wondered if Prompto didn't have any wrapping paper or even scotch tape, but he let it slide as he took the bow off and opened the box.
Looking down into the box, for a split second he thought it was empty. He thought for a moment that it was some kind of stupid joke, but then he saw it.
He saw the little blob of fur move to look up at him.
With shaking hands he reached down and pulled out a small black kitten with white on around its nose, chest and paws. "P-Prom?" Noctis asked, his voice becoming watery.
"Surprise!" Prompto said cheerfully.
Noctis couldn't even begin to describe how he was feeling. Everything seemed to burst out at once and he didn't bother to hold anything back. He let out his sobs as he brought the little kitten to his face. He could feel it's warm body and heart beating in his hands, and he never wanted to let go.
Pressing a kiss to the top of the kitten's head, he tried not to let his tears drip down on to it. This was a kitten. It was his kitten now. Prompto had gotten him a kitten. It was one thing he had wanted for years, but no one knew that.
"Noct?" Prompto said as he put down the phone. "Uh did I do something wrong? Not the type of kitten you want?"
"N-No not that," Noctis managed in his weak voice. He knew he probably sounded pathetic as he whined through each word. He pressed a kiss to the kitten's head again as he kept holding it close. "How did you k-know?"
"Well I asked, remember? When we walked by the shelter a couple months ago?"
All the memories of that day seemed to float back into Noctis's mind. He remembered it now as clear as day when he passed by the shelter window with Prompto.
"Aw look at the cute little pile of sleeping kittens!"
"Yeah so cute."
"You want one?"
"Huh?"
"Do you want a kitten or something? Never seen you smile that way before at anything. Not every video game!"
"I guess…"
"Well why not buy one?"
"Ah… you know they would just give me a kitten cause I'm the prince. Plus would have to run it by with Ignis… he'd probably say no."
"But you do want a kitten? Maybe for one day?"
"Yeah, maybe one day."
Sobbing again, Noctis placed the kitten carefully back into the box. Then without warning he latched himself onto Prompto, crying into his shoulder. He couldn't believe he hadn't realized it before. He hadn't even considered the simplicity of the words back then.
He didn't tell Prompto first that he wanted a cat, Prompto asked him first. He had asked him if he wanted something and he had listened. He actually got something he had always wanted because someone had the courtesy to ask him if he wanted it in the first place.
That was what most of his emotions were. Aside from the kitten being cute, and it being something he always wanted, the act of kindness Prompto displayed was more than enough. He had no idea what else to say as he laid there, hugging Prompto hoping that he understood his thanks.
"You okay Noct?" Prompto asked as he hugged Noctis back. "I didn't mean to make you cry."
"Y-You're good," Noctis whispered. "I'm just h-happy."
"Aw I'm glad. I thought you might like this little guy. He's a tuxedo cat and I thought that would be so purrfect for you. So he can be all fancy for the galas and come with you."
Noctis laughed, enjoying the terrible pun humor. Slowly he started to take in a few deep breaths, trying to calm himself back down. "That sounds nice. Ignis is going to flip though."
"Actually…" Prompto pulled back from the hug and chuckled. "He kind of already knows."
"What?"
"I thought it would be good to run it by him before I just went and bought a kitten. You know to make sure you weren't allergic or anything. Don't worry though, I didn't let him pay for it. He just oversaw it all."
"You really paid it all? Doesn't it cost a lot?"
"Yeah but, I know you wanted a kitten. Thought it would be a good gift. And if you're happy then I say it was totally worth it."
Smiling, Noctis finally wiped the tears from his face. He heard a soft little mew from the box and went to pick up his kitten again. "Hey little guy," he whispered softly. "Sorry about putting you back there. Just needed to thank Prompto for a moment. You good now?"
"Mew."
Noctis laughed, petting the head of his new friend. "Aw you are a sweetheart. Boy or girl?"
"Oh, boy. It was the only tuxedo cat they had and I just couldn't resist a cat that looks like he is in a suit! You get to name him though, I didn't put down anything for that on the papers yet."
"Thanks Prom… really," Noctis replied as he held the kitten close to his chest. "This is the best present I've ever gotten."
