Chapter 1
There, I awoke, again.
Right there, in that puddle, covered by a cloak of moss.
The sapling growing behind my head itches slightly as I scratch it with no clue what planted it there.
I live alone here, alone here where humans roam with pets through the day and sleep under the stars, when I awaken to hunt.
I have lived and hunted here since before the humans arrived, before they chopped all the trees down, before they befriended the horses, tricked the horses into pulling them along and figured out how to make metal do the same instead.
But now is not the time of reminiscing, this is the time to hunt with the foxes.
As I get up, the foxes in the burrows nearby awoke as well and darted off into the night and I followed along diligently.
The foxes quickly found small game and livestock for themselves before leading me to some deer that made the mistake of wandering nearby.
I quickly pounced on the nearest of the deer and severed the head off, of the corpse, I lifted that to my chest as I stood on my hind legs to carry home, a pair of the foxes grabbing the antlers of the deer to carry back for me.
And so, we hobbled back to the assortment of burrows to drop off our kills and eat.
Once home, I chopped up the deer evenly for each fox burrow and began eating the head, melting the meat from the skull before grinding the bones to pulp in my jaws.
Nothing remained of the deer's head before dawn and I laid down to rest as I had drank the lot. I fell asleep fast, with a full stomach. I would be sleeping for many moons to come, ignoring the many hundreds of owls that flew overhead, that morning…
