As each one of us grabbed a seat, in the huge room made out of transparent glass, they sauntered with their friends.While I was staring at all the other 16 year old citizens,who awaited the aptitude test, an instructor walked down the stairs, dressed in hues of blue. Jeanine swiftly grabbed her seat beside her Dauntless members. As the instructor posted himself in the centre, in front of the mic, there was pin drop silence and he began the story…
"Years ago our founders created the faction system because they believed it would maintain peace.Today is the aptitude test, it depicts the results based on your personality and tells which faction suits you the best. You can be in Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity or Candor. Everyone must select the faction which they belong to,for the rest of their lives. The test results determine who you are and where you belong. In the end, the choice is yours, you can still choose over your test results,but we believe that the stimulation better tells which faction you belong in. Now proceed to your allocated aptitude test locations,"he ended.
Jeanine, an ordinary 16 year old blonde, fit and muscular, with gray watery eyes, just like melted steel.Is dressed in black, and appears to be a Dauntless. She walked along with her companions, and stepped into the room. She seemed excited, yet nervous about what would happen to her. Holding her fist tight, she walked towards the stimulation system. She glanced at a woman who was preparing a blue serum.
"Patricia Collen here,"she said.
Jeanine lay back on a black flat seat, the room was filled with mirrors on the walls. The women wandered towards her, holding an injecting tool.
" I'll inject you with a serum, and you'll have to face the situation that you'll find when you are in the stimulation,"she said.
After Patricia injected Jeanine, she remembered nothing. A few minutes later, she was out of the situation, Patricia gave her a confused look. As Jeanine entered the second situation, which again took only a few minutes.
Jeanine was about to find out which faction she belonged to. Patricia on the other hand looked tense.
"What are my test results?"Jeanine questioned.
"Ahh, the test results are wrong,"she said heavily.
"What do you mean? They're supposed to tell me what I am supposed to choose tomorrow at the choosing ceremony, even if I have the option to choose whatever I want to,"she said.
"They were Dauntless and……,"she said panting.
" And… WHAT,"Jeanine murmured softly.
" Erudite, just go home, you don't belong to any one kind of faction,"she said.
" Which of these two factions should I choose tomorrow?" Jeanine asked.
" Don't worry, we'll fix this soon,"she replied.
Patricia was worried for Jeanine. She was confused how to fix this;what if other factions harm her for not being of their kind. Patricia returned to Amity, but continuously thought about how to take her out of the situation.
When Jeanine walked back home she kept thinking about what she should choose. Should she stay with her abusive father and disinterested mother, who never cared for her or choose Erudite and start a new life. She still kept reminding herself that it was her family no matter what the past has been.
When she reached home, she went to her room and threw herself on the bed, looking at the glass ceiling. She was still trying to make a decision for her life. As the daylight dwindled the tension in the sky grew.
There are times when it is wise to let the feeling of fear educate you. The fear of her being with her parents, which is like being captive in her own house. She wants to live her life with freedom, and not stay under anyone's control. With all these thoughts and confusions she slept.
The next day Jeanine went to the same building where her test was carried out, when she spotted Patricia,and walked towards her.
"Ok! Listen, because you don't belong to one particular faction, I'll train you to overcome the other faction and make you belong to one,"she said.
"Yesterday I thought over whatever happened in my aptitude test, after a lot of reflection, I decided to no longer be a Dauntless, I don't feel that I belong to a faction that risks their lives for others. Instead, Erudite was always fascinating for me, the best of all ,"Jeanine said with a subtle smile.
Jeanine didn't tell Patricia about her family, which made her choose Erudite, so that she could get rid of her parents. When she was still wondering that she had made the right decision, she heard Patricia.
"Aren't you scared?" She asked.
" I am never scared," Jeanine replied.
Patricia being a faction transfer from Erudite, knew how to get Jeanine through the initiation.
After a few years, Jeanine became Erudite's leader, solely because she deserved it, scoring the highest in IQ(140-160),almost a genius. Patricia was glad that she helped a person who could have been dead, for not being of one kind. Instead, would have been thrown to the Factionless.
As usual it was Monday, when Amity is supposed to supply food to other factions because they are the only ones who grow and process it. Today, as Patricia was supplying food to the Dauntless, she saw Jeanine at the Dauntless basement,supplying loaded boxes. She felt that there was something ominous about Jeanine's presence at Dauntless. Patricia kept on observing her for the next two to three days. The day before, when she was about to head back to Amity, she remembered hearing Eric and Jeanine secretly discussing controlling Dauntless behind the truck. They were going to do this by injecting all of them with some controlling serum which would turn them into sleepwalkers,like they were hypnotised. Patricia needed to talk to Jeanine. When Jeanine was returning, Patricia caught a hold of her, before she disappeared.
"I need to talk to you Jeanine,"she commanded.
"Who are you? Move away," she replied.
Patricia pulled her and took her to the corner.
"Leave my hand and STAY OUT OF THIS," she said.
"Why are you doing this?," Patricia asked.
"Doing, what?" Jeanine shouted.
" Your plans are about killing Abnegation, searching for divergents, and killing them, as if I don't know anything,"she said.
" BECAUSE, I am tired of listening to people like you, I want to rule this faction system and want to be superior over all with my new government," she replied.
"Seriously, are you out of your head? I made a mistake in helping you, I should not have been so kind to you, it's all my fault that I trusted you," she said.
" Well!.. I used you! for my benefit, nothing else and get lost! I don't care about anything," Jeanine replied.
" I'm not gonna let your intentions come true. I will tell everyone about this," she said.
Patricia walked out and started heading towards the central government office so that she could inform her husband, Amity's leader, as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Jeanine sent out her goons to stop Patricia. Patricia texted John, asking for help. She ran towards the headquarters and saved herself from Jeanine's people, who were trying to kill her.When she rushed towards the office, the surrounding became chaotic, and noisy. There was a sudden disruption, as if Jeanine had started her mission, Abnegation running all over, saving themselves from the hypnotized Dauntless, with guns and weapons. Felt like all that she heard a few days ago was coming to reality. This gives the assurity that Jeanine was involved in this situation for sure.
The Dauntless, who were our protectors,our police started killing Abnegation. At the same time, she saw John on a truck and ran towards him.
" Ohhh… god! what happened, why are you sweating so much? Why are they running all over?" he asked.
"Jeanine, she is of no good to our society, she is killing people," Patricia said panting. They drove back immediately to the office, figuring out the reasons for this disturbance.
When they reached. John took Patricia to the restroom.
John rushed, announced on the mic, to order Jeanine Matthew to the ground for disturbing the society's peace.
When Jeanine realised that Patricia has already reached the central authority, she heads to the HQ, expecting that her hypnotizing serum will be everything over the government. She was not scared,yet was ready to mesmerize them, with her army, so that she stops them from destroying her aims. She was determined and was not afraid of anything.When Jeanine arrived at the headquarters, she saw everyone gathered at the meeting place.
" Aren't you forgetting something!!! shouldn't I be invited to this meeting too,John!!" She said.
ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Dauntless entered pointing guns at the people present in the office. Everyone at the office was injected with the serum, laying on the floor, able to do nothing, only hear her evil laugh of achievement. But she didn't stop there, she kept searching for Patricia, in the building.
Patricia on the other end, saw everything happening, but couldn't help it as she had no protection. For the government, attacking must defend those who cannot defend themselves. The government will rescue you. Our authorities will take down those who harm others and have refused to change their ways. She had to stop this at any cost.When she glanced at John, right beside him she saw a stimulation serum laying, she crawled two steps towards it, and grabbed it.
Waiting for the right moment, when Jeanine faced the opposite side she sprinted towards her and injected it to her.
"Stop this, stop the Dauntless," Patricia commanded.
Jeanine, still in the stimulation, tried to push her, but soon, she began to sleep walk like the others. Patricia took this advantage, and asked her to stop her system.
When everything settled back to normal,the injected people came out of the stimulation, even the Dauntless and the authorities came back to normal.
Everyone at the Central Government became aware of Jeanine, because they had the proof,the massacre was captured on the CCTV cameras, she had no chance to escape. Candor decided to punish her, because they believed in honesty, and Jeanine's fraudulent act was not acceptable. She was then arrested and terminated from the leadership position. Patricia took a moment to say the last words to her, " If I helped you, I can stop you too,"
As the officers were taking her she screamed and said,"NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO, I'LL KILL EACH ONE OF YOU, JUST WATCH OUT."
