It wasn't a spur of the moment decision, but rather, she really wanted to honor her dad and keep some small part of him within the family. A genealogy wouldn't list the name that she's come to know as his name or at least as the name that he took on some odd months before she would be born. John Casey, and aside from that, she can tell that now John Casey held just as much weight if not more for her father than his original name had.
So, she really wants to keep his name in the family somehow, find a way to memorialize this part of her identity and her child's identity, just as her mom memorialized her dad's identity when she'd been told that Alex had died a hero's death during the war. She bore her father's original name: Alex, and that means a lot of things.
And besides that, her dad had once said, 'us, Caseys,' and that had resonated with her in a way that it was hard to really articulate. Alex was considered a Casey too, a spy's daughter, a soldier's daughter, the daughter of a hero, of a strong man that didn't back down from a fight and had the heart and courage that most people could only dream about. She is his daughter, regardless of what name he's wearing, and there has to be a way to really show her dad how much he means to her and how much she considers herself a part of their family. Just asking Morgan something like this is a big deal, bigger than she'd ever imagined, and how could she really ask him something like this?
"So, Morgan?" Alex feels the jitters spring up around her, harder than they ever have since she's been pregnant and harder than they've hit her since her wedding day or even the day that she first found out she was pregnant, and they were expecting a little baby.
"Yeah?" Morgan dropped the game controller like a hot potato and really looked at her; it's moments like these that she remembers exactly why she fell in love with him.
"I have an idea for what to name our baby?" It sounds more like a question than Alex had intended, but how do you ask one of the most important questions of your life? If this is the way that Morgan felt when he proposed to her, she definitely doesn't envy it.
"Oh, baby boy or baby girl?" They had never asked what gender their baby is, never longed to know until childbirth. As Morgan had told the doctors once, 'Surprise me.' Alex probably shouldn't have laughed that day, but it had been said with enough conviction that it felt almost like a 'fight me,' but also spontaneous enough that it became nearly a joke in that moment. They'd already said that they were waiting to find out, long before that first Ultrasound visit.
"Either." Alex gulps, a little worried about her own answer.
"Either?" Morgan looks at her, a little confused, and then, "Like our names?"
"Yeah. Sort of." Alex admits, finally, "I want to name her after someone."
"Oh! That's cool. Who?" Morgan looks so excited, that she doesn't really know how to get the words out.
"My dad." Alex wonders for a moment if that's a little weird; it feels weird in this moment.
"Alex?" Morgan suggests, remembering vaguely that she'd mentioned that she was named after her dad before.
"No." Alex takes a deep, reassuring breath, "Casey."
"Oh, oh, oh!" Morgan gasps, shocked, but still thankfully somewhat excited, "That could work! I mean, works! And a little girl can be named Casey or a little boy!"
"Yeah. And I wanted to keep Dad's name in our family." She admits, finally taking a seat next to her husband.
"Yeah!" Morgan pauses with a wide grin, "Oh, man! Casey's going to be so excited!"
"I hope so." Alex smiled as she scooted closer to her husband; it will all be okay, after all.
