Ariel went to her father one day asking the reason why he had told no mermaid or merman to go up to the surface. "Dad, why can't we go up to the surface?" said Ariel. Her father responded with, "Well Ariel, humans are bad people and if they saw us, they would treat us badly." "But how do you know that if you've never gone up to the surface before, daddy?" said Ariel. "I just do, now go run along and remember to never go up to the surface." Said her father.
Then Ariel left confused and without answers, so she decided to go to the library where everything that happens end up in a book. She thought that if she went there, she could know more behind the reason of not letting mermaids go to the surface.
One hour went by, and she found nothing other than the same thing her father had told her about humans. "They can't be trusted", "They are bad", "They are killers". She did not get anything that was different. Until she found at the end of the book about King Charles, which was her grandfather, but she never got to meet him because he died from a tragic accident. Instead of continuing her search she investigated her grandfather.
She read about how heroic he was, how he saved lots of people, and the things he did to keep the sea from any harm. Ariel was extremely interested into everything she was reading. She was curious on to why her father never told her about her grandfather. She kept reading about his history up to the point where it said that he was killed by a human ship going up to the surface.
Ariel gasped in shocked of what she just read. She did not know how to react or whether to talk to her father about it. She finally decided to keep reading and it said,
"King Charles was killed in a tragic accident. He was hit by a ship from up above the surface. There was no evidence onto who had caused the accident to happen, but King Henry, ruler of the land people, also known as humans, said, 'I saw something in the water in front of the ship and thought it might had been a big fish, but I didn't want to stop just because something was in the water, so I went through it.' This helped us narrow down who to accuse of the murder of King Charles."
Ariel did not know what to say. She had nothing against humans because she never met one before. She truly knew now that all humans were bad. She had the prove. After she finished reading that section, she took the book with her and swam as fast as she could to her father to show her what she found.
Her father saw her as she was heading right to him. He asked her, "Why are you in such a rush Ariel, slow down." "I went to the library to find something more on humans and I found this book on my grandfather. You never told me anything about my grandfather." Said Ariel. "There's nothing to say about him, if he's not here, right?"
Ariel showed her father that he was killed by a human and Ariel kept telling her everything she found on him. King Triton wanted to know what her point was of showing her all these things he already knew. "Can you tell me what you're trying to tell me about all of this information I already know." Said King Triton. "Now I know why you hate humans so much. Its because of your dad." "Yes, it is but it's also that I don't want anything to happen to you as well." "I understand know father that I shouldn't be near the surface or by humans." Said Ariel.
After that whole talk, Ariel went home and kept the book that she took from the library and knew not to mess with that topic anymore with her father. King triton was happy that she knew the reason behind it but also that she wasn't going to keep digging more information about humans and just leave it as it is.
