Hermione huffed as she finished packing everything. She was going to be gone for quite some time. Likely forever, if she didn't get killed. She did her best to think of the positive that was coming from her doing this, but the fact she was facing in losing the family she had made here, today, in her time they had suffered, she had found a sliver of happiness, with the unlikeliest of people, but happiness it was.
Picking up a photograph of her and her family, her husband, and their two gorgeous children. The pain of leaving them, of knowing that if she changed the past that she would lose this family of being possible. Lifting the older photograph to her eyes lever, a photo of herself, Ron, and Harry that had been taken back at the beginning of their third year, Hermione's bottom lip trembled as she held the picture frame close to her heart sadly, she remembered why she was doing this, why she was risking changing the past for a better future for them all. "It's my turn to save you this time." She whispered to herself.
A sudden knock to her office door had Hermione quickly sweeping the falling tears from her cheeks before she turned and found a tall man with graying black hair smiling to her a bit weakly.
"Sorry, but you have a visitor." He said nodding his head beside him.
Smiling to him weakly Hermione nodded, "It's fine Dudley. Who is it?" Hermione asked curiously. Her brows raised with a curious look of amusement as the platinum blonde-haired thirteen-year-old girl with dark green eyes poked her head sheepishly around the corner. She was dressed in her Halloween feast dress of a burgundy silk skirt and her robe-like top of long sleeves that slimed along her arms and the front buttoned-down was a deep 'A' line. The girl was absolutely adorable.
While this girl, and those her age and a few years older, had been born with this style of clothing in these hard times, Hermione had never gotten used to the old style. Aside from their clothing, their technology had also been destroyed, regressed to nothing but quills and paper and telegram deliveries, which were still very difficult if they needed to speak to anyone outside of their Haven. It was almost impossible to get anything out to their allies around the world.
Upon Voldemort taking power a year after Harry's death, everything had been destroyed and Muggles and magical begins had swarmed together in a last-minute attempt at survival. It had taken them years to establish the Haven they lived in now, that being just off the grounds of Hogwarts Ruins after Voldemort had personally destroyed the ancient castle and school.
Viktor Krum had come here himself after his wife and daughter had been killed by Death Eaters six years ago, and Dudley had come looking for them when he was sixteen, using his cousin's name as his own to get their attention. Unfortunately, he'd gotten the attention of Voldemort as well and Dudley had been lucky the Order found him before the Death Eaters had.
They knew they'd need to be on their school grounds simply for the magical properties the earth could give them. They'd grown their own herbs for years now. However, they'd been forced to regress a few of their potion's abilities to 'Old' and 'Ancient' ways. Though Hermione knew that the past ways had probably helped them now in the future to further their potions and creations of new ones. Hermione was honestly surprised the old ways had helped so much. She had learned so many things from the old ways that they hadn't learned in school. It was fascinating, the things they hadn't been taught.
Forcing back her bitter and painful memories, Hermione sighed as she looked at the girl peeking around the Office door. The girl's adorable behavior had Hermione smiling a real smile. She was one of Hermione's most talented students, besides her own kids. It only topped the cake at the fact that she was Hermione's goddaughter. "Aurelia Aurora Newnan, aren't you supposed to be at the Feast?" Hermione questioned the girl.
Coming around the office wall, Aurelia looked around Hermione's office, "I wanted to see my favorite teacher and godmother… I overheard you saying that you were leaving tonight. Why? There aren't any missions posted." Aurelia asked her Professor and godmother with worry.
Hermione sighed as she grabbed her small velvet fabric purse which she had placed an extension spell on ages ago and held her hand towards the door. "Let's go. Everyone is likely missing you at the Fest." She told the young girl. Hermione smiled as she watched Aurelia softly sigh and walked out with her with Dudley following behind them. Hermione had noticed a long time ago that Dudley was surprisingly good as their head security for being a Muggle. He saw things half of their magical security teams did not. "I have a personal mission I have to do."
Frightened at knowing exactly what she was talking about, Aurelia turned to Hermione, "That's not a mission Professor!" she said loudly turning on her favorite teacher with worried eyes, "That's suicide. You can't go -"
"Aurora!" Hermione snapped a bit at the girl clearly having a panic attack over Hermione leaving. But she appreciated her fears. Especially since Hermione had told Aurelia's parents she'd watch out for the girl. "I have to Aurora. Look, I know I promised your parents I'd always be here to watch you. But this is something I have to do." Hermione told her Goddaughter sadly. Sighing, Hermione looked around and found a chair before grabbing the girls' arms tenderly and took a seat, remembering how wonderful Aurelia's parents had been. She remembered their wedding day, how happy they had been when they found they were going to be parents, how happy Hermione had been when Luna had asked her to be the godmother.
Cedric Diggory had married Luna Lovegood, when the couple had Aurelia, they'd feared both of their family names being famously well known to the wizarding Community. It had driven Cedric and Luna to give their daughter a partially false maiden name. That being Luna's mother's maiden name, Newnan.
Cedric had lived through the Tournament while Harry had died, the man had lived with the guilt of letting Harry die until his own death about ten years ago. Cedric had said, on the few occasions he would speak about that night, that he had Harry in his arms when he'd called the Cup to them, but as soon as he'd had the cup in hand to take them out of there, Harry had been spellbound and ripped from Cedric's hold. And he'd been unable to go back for the boy.
As Hermione looked at the girl before she, she smiled sadly. Aurelia looked just like her grandmother, Pandora Lovegood (neé Newnan). They only knew this from the photos Luna and Cedric had left behind for the girl to know at least something of them. Unfortunately, they had been killed when Aurelia was just a toddler.
Once more sighing softly, Hermione gently grabbed Aurelia's little hands, "Aurelia, I have to go. I am the only one who can go. We can't send Dudley, Draco can't go, no one else can go. We have one shot -"
"But you already told us all the story! You tried going back, more than once! And you still couldn't save them. Not to be harsh, but how exactly do you plan to save them now?" Aurelia questioned. Though, it was a fair question. But she knew it was also cold as to how she had asked her teacher, her own godmother, this. But she did not want to lose her favorite Professor, her guardian, her godmother, the only mother she had really know. "You're the only mother I know,"
Pressing a figure to the girl's lips, Hermione smiled sadly. Seeing the girls' defeat Hermione lowered her figure from silencing the now self-silent girl and placed a sweet kiss on Aurelia's forehead. "I have to go, Aurora... I love you, sweet girl." Hermione told the young girl with a heavy heart full of love. She loved Aurelia as her own in Luna's place as a mother. But she had to try to save them. If she could fix the past, then maybe things would turn out for a better future.
Sniffing back the now falling tears, Aurelia nodded. "I love you to godmother." Aurelia did not want to lose the only mother she knew, least of all did she want Louie or Nesrin to go through the pain of losing one of their parents as she had with both of hers. All in one night.
The two held onto one another for not long enough in either of their opinions before they pulled apart. Clearing her throat sadly, Hermione stood and looked to their Head of Security, "Dudley, take her to the Feast please." Hermione asked the man who had gradually became a friend of hers over the years.
Nodding, Dudley kept his silent sigh to himself. Gripping Hermione's shoulder with silent good wishes before walking Aurelia back to the bustling large underground feast. Even though he'd lived there with them for years, since he was sixteen, he was still struck by how much they could still do with their magic. Gently patting her back to go find a seat before he'd left the Feast, Dudley knew he had his own job to do.
The Feast had bustled on like it always had in the past. They'd lived under the ruins and had gone to classes under the ruins for thirty-three, almost thirty-four, years. Professor Jones was doing her yearly Halloween Speech that Professor McGonagall would give before the dear Witch's passing. Her tomb was even underground with the rest of the deceased names upon a wall. Those whose bodies they could reclaim were buried, while those who were simply enshrined in carved marble stones for lot places. But in the end, all of their names were placed upon their wall to Honor the dead.
Aurelia had hardly listened to Professor Jones while her mind did circles. But the tingling chills continued to run up her spine that it finally had her taking in an annoyed breath and did a slight body shake to rid herself of the chills. Something wasn't right.
"Hey, are you alright?" A boy asked coming up behind her.
Turning to look at the boy, she smiled sadly with a sigh. Shaking her head to him she tapped the empty place beside her and waited for him to sit, "My Godmother is leaving shortly on an assignment." She whispered.
Confused, the boy looked around curiously. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know. She's been going to the Shrieking Shack lately, the last few weeks actually -"
"Wait, you've been following Professor Granger?" The boy said with some shock. He was quickly silenced by Aurelia clamping her hand over his mouth.
"No…" She said in the attempt to hide the fact that he was in fact correct. Suddenly realizing that she was making a small scene, Aurelia smiled around the table a bit and released the boy, going back to picking at her food on her plate, "…Yes… to answer your question, Gaius… She comes home late, later than usual. So, I started following her." She answered weakly with an embarrassed sigh. Feeling a tap to her leg, she looked up to Gaius grinning, who motioned his head and grabbed her hand and tried to sneak off with her behind the table and possibly out a side door. They had many hidden doors in their Haven, in case it was ever breached. And he'd been lucky enough to know just about every single route of escape.
Slipping her hand from his hold, Aurelia looked around the table, thankful no one was paying attention to them any longer. "We can't leave together Gaius. You know the rules. Anyways, my Uncle would skin both of us alive if I was found wandering off with a boy five years older than me." She told him under a whisper, her cheeks blushing at his suggestion.
Grinning at seeing her blushing cheeks, he glanced at her goblet. "Drink your juice, maybe it'll make you feel better, less stressed." He suggested sitting back beside her.
Thinking about that for a moment, Aurelia sighed a bit heavily and took a big drink of her juice. "Okay? Still worried here." She told him after a moment. However, his grin told her he was up to something, maybe his usual pranks. The thought had her rolling her eyes at him. She was always his target for pranks, but that was because the boy liked her, that much she knew but he didn't have to make her his guinea pig. Her mind was still spinning with worry until Aurelia suddenly felt more than just a little ill. With her head becoming dizzy, and her stomach turned every which way.
Right now, she didn't know if she should thank the guy for getting her out of the Feast or curse him. "Gaius, what did you -" Covering her mouth quickly to keep from vomiting, her other hand gripped ahold of his cotton white button-down long-sleeved shirt. Aurelia knew he had to of had this pre-planned, and now that she thought of it, he hadn't put anything in her drink at all in front of her. Which told her he'd planned on getting her out of here in the first place. "Gaius," Aurelia swallowed back her drying saliva as he lifted her into his arms and walked down the aisles towards the door.
"Where are you taking our cousin, Gaius Gallows," The boy accused Gaius with glaring eyes.
He sighed with deep annoyance as two blonds stepped in his path. "Hello, Malfoy's," Gaius said with obvious dislike.
