Annabeth groaned as she opened her eyes and lifted her head off of the bus window. She pulled out her headphones and wiped the sleep out from her eyes. She stretched out her arms and pulled down her Yankee's cap as she looked around the bus. There were several tired faces and everyone dreaded the fact of going back to school. Annabeth shared this feeling but probably for several different reasons than the other kids. The bus finally came to a stop and Annabeth quickly got out from her seat at the front of the bus and made her way up towards the entrance to Goode High School.
"Annabeth how've you been," she heard a friendly voice call out to her as she approached the door. She looked up to see Piper running over to her, a wide smile on her face, and Thalia was close behind.
"I've been alright," Annabeth admitted with a shrug of her shoulders as she lightly returned Piper's embrace.
"Where have you been Annie," Thalia asked, "We didn't see or hear from you all summer."
"Yeah I've been busy," Annabeth told them but she saw the doubt in Thalia's eyes.
"Busy doing what," Thalia asked her, "Keeping your nose down in a book all summer."
"First of all there's nothing wrong with that," Annabeth pointed out, "And second of all no, I was busy with a job at the Paul's Diner that Helen made me get." At the mention of Annabeth's step-mother both of the girls had an annoyed look on their faces.
"Why do you still put up with her," Piper asked, "She treats you like garbage."
"You both know why I can't," Annabeth told them, "If I said anything to her then next thing I would know I would be off on my own."
"You know that you could always bunk with us," Thalia reassured her but Annabeth shook her head.
"I appreciate it Thalia but I couldn't accept that," Annabeth said and she saw Thalia become more annoyed by her stubbornness.
"What girl," Thalia said as she waved it off, "You just need to learn to stand up to that bitch."
"Anyways what does your guy's schedule look like," Piper asked with a sudden eagerness. The three girls then all pulled up their schedules on their phones and started to compare them. "Sweet," Piper said when she saw that they had a fair amount of classes together.
"How in the world did you get a class being a library aid," Thalia asked as she looked at Annabeth's schedule.
"Well I took some summer classes to free up my schedule," Annabeth told her, "Plus Ms. Foster like me." Thalia just shook her head and she muttered something but Annabeth didn't quite catch it. The three of them turned to walk up the steps but all paused when they heard the loud rev of an engine from the parking lot. Annabeth didn't even need to turn around to know where the engine came from but she still did like most of the students out of the front of the school. She looked out and saw a student pull into one of the front parking spots on a black motorcycle. He wore a black leather jacket with a pair of blue jeans and no helmet as he let his black hair fly in the wind. He killed the engine and swung his leg over the side of the motorcycle as a large group of boys walked over to him.
"Does he always have to do that," Piper asked as she watched the boys gather around and talk with one another.
"It's Kelp Head what do you think," Thalia told her and Piper just shook her head as she watched the boys finally start to head towards the building. Out in the front of the group was the one who rode in on the motorcycle and who was also the most popular person at their school, Percy Jackson. He was the captain and star quarterback of the football team and played a major role in turning the team around to what it was now.
"I'll see you guys in first period," Annabeth told the other two and then turned to head up the steps into the building. As she walked up the steps she saw almost everyone looking in Percy's direction, most of them being the groups of girls. Annabeth never had a real conversation with Percy but she knew a pretty good bit about him. He wasn't the greatest student in the world, mainly because he didn't try too hard. He seemed to focus more on parties and football games than anything in class. He also had a history of hooking up with a lot of girls, but never any real relationships. For that reason, Annabeth sort of disregarded him, not that the two were ever in the spot where they interacted with each other anyways. However he did have his nice moments where he would stand up for people when they needed it.
Annabeth recalled back to their junior year where a sophomore was harassing a group of freshmen in the first week of school. Percy spotted him and then pulled him away from the freshman. However his next move was to deliver a right cross to his jaw that led to a pretty nasty bruise. Annabeth respected his intentions but not necessarily how he carried them out most of the time. She shook her head as she walked over to her locker and then moved the dial to enter her combination. Once the door popped open she opened her bag and dumped anything she wouldn't need for the day in there. She quickly dashed off to her first period class where she found the room to be empty.
Since nobody else was in the room Annabeth had free range for where she was going to sit. She decided to take a seat that was in the middle row and close by the window. As she sat down in the desk Annabeth laid her bag next to her. She pulled out a book from her bag and opened it from where she left off last. She read through the remaining minutes before class started and stopped when she heard voices coming towards the room. Annabeth looked up to see both Piper and Thalia walk into the room. Both of them spotted her and Thalia took a spot behind her and Piper sat next to Thalia in the next row over.
"Seriously Annabeth," Thalia asked as she looked over Annabeth's shoulder and down at the book in her hands.
"What else am I going to do," Annabeth asked her as she put the book back in her bag.
"Anything but that," Thalia pleaded but Annabeth just shrugged it off as she looked around and saw the final students come into the class. Her eyes focused on the door as she saw Percy walk into the room and he looked around for an open seat. His eyes landed next to Annabeth and she realized that the only open seat was next to her. He slowly walked over to desk and laid down his bag as he nodded to the girls.
"How's it going Kelp Head," Thalia asked as she threw a paper ball at the back of his head.
"Pretty good Pinecone Face," Percy said back and Annabeth looked back to see a sour expression on Thalia's face. Just then the bell to begin class rang and the teacher walked into the room and placed his bag on the desk.
"Morning class," the teacher said as he pulled a few things out of his bag and set them on the desk. "My name is Mr. Blofis for those who don't know and I will be your English teacher for the year. Now I hope everyone read and brought their summer reading books to class today." Several students groaned at the thought of the summer reading book and Annabeth smirked. Not only did she read the book, she enjoyed it so much that she read it twice. Mr. Blofis then had then handed them pieces of paper and began to write some things on the white board behind.
"Psst," she heard faintly to her right but she ignored it as she looked up at the board. A small paper ball then landed on her desk and she looked over at the person who threw it and saw Percy looking at her. "Can I borrow a pen," he asked her as he leaned over towards her.
"What," Annabeth asked him as she leaned closer to him as well.
"A pen," Percy repeated, "Do you have a pen I can borrow."
"Sure," she said slowly and then leaned back over to pull a pen out from the side of her bag. She leaned back over to hand the pen to Percy who nodded his thanks as he took it from her. Annabeth just shrugged it off but she caught herself looking at him and found it entertaining to watch his face full of concentration. She shook the thought from her head and then focused back towards the board. She just hoped that the Fates would be on her side and give her an uneventful year.
Apparently the Fates liked to screw with Annabeth, or at least she thought so when she walked to the cafeteria. Her hopes for having an uneventful year seemed to be ruined when she passed by a group of girls passing from her second to third period class. In the center of this group was Rachel Elizabeth Dare. Annabeth tried to stay away from Rachel as much as possible because anytime they would interact it always ended badly. For this reason Annabeth dreaded the fact that she and Rachel, along with a few other girls in her friend group had P.E as their last class of the day. With that in mind Annabeth entered the cafeteria and made her way into the lunch line. She looked around and decided to grab a plastic container that held a chicken salad.
She then decided to grab a water bottle from the fridge and then walked off to her section of the cafeteria. It was off to the side of the room and close by the door into the cafeteria. She set her bag down on the floor and sighed as she sat down in the chair.
"Honestly I don't know why you sit over here," Thalia told her as she sat down across from her.
"What's wrong with being over here," Annabeth asked as she looked up to see Thalia raising an eyebrow at her.
"You what's wrong Annabeth," Thalia told her, "You are excluding yourself from the whole room. You're the best sprinter on the track team yet you act like you're a nobody."
"I'm not the best," Annabeth started to say but Thalia cut her off.
"Annabeth, you have been to state every single year," Thalia told her, "You've set school records in multiple events, multiple times might I add. There is a difference between being humble and being blind to your talents."
"I just don't like attention that's all," Annabeth said as she tried to shrug it off.
"There is a fine line between not liking attention and just staying in the dark," Thalia pointed out.
"Can we just leave it please," Annabeth asked and thankfully Thalia nodded. A few seconds later Calypso, Reyna, Piper, and Hazel joined them at the table.
"Well look at that," Piper said as she sat down at the table, "The gang is all here."
"How's everyone's summer been," Hazel asked as she looked around the table. There were several murmur's of 'pretty good' and 'couldn't complain' but Annabeth remained silent.
"Annabeth," Reyna said with a raised eyebrow, "You feeling alright."
"Yeah why," Annabeth asked a bit too quickly and it seemed like everyone else picked up what Reyna was suggesting with her comment.
"Girl why don't you get out of that house," Piper started to ask but Annabeth cut her off with a single look.
"Please can we not discuss that right now," Annabeth pleaded and all the girls nodded slowly. Suddenly a short burst of laughter sounded through the cafeteria and they all turned around to find the source of the noise. Annabeth quickly spotted the person who laughed, that person being Rachel. She was walking through the cafeteria alongside Percy who had his arm slung around her shoulder. They finally reached their table in the center of the cafeteria and Annabeth turned back to see several scowling faces on everybody's faces.
"Can't stand that bitch," Annabeth heard Piper mutter under her breath.
"Didn't they break up after the party at the beginning of summer break," Calypso pointed out. Everyone then turned to look at Thalia who noticed and had a questioning look on her face.
"Don't look at me," Thalia said as she held up her hands, "I'm not his keeper." Everyone muttered a few more comments and Annabeth couldn't help but look at the table a second time. She didn't dive into too much but apparently Rachel was caught making out with some other guy at a party. Percy was obviously pissed and it resulted into a major conflict, but somehow they were back together again. Lunch proceeded to be uneventful and Annabeth didn't mind it. Finally the bell rang to end lunch and all the girls headed off to their next class, all of them having P.E together. They all made it into the locker room and picked lockers all next to each other. They all changed into their gym clothes and headed off into the gymnasium where Coach Hedge was waiting for them.
"Alright cupcakes move it, I'm not getting any younger while you walk," Coach Hedge yelled out.
"Or any quieter," Thalia muttered, making the girls all snicker as they walked over to the bleachers. The class then filled the bleachers and Coach Hedge waited for everyone to be seated before he started yelling again.
"I think we can keep class simple today," Coach Hedge, "So how about the pacer test." Several students groaned and others protested but Coach Hedge kept his smirk on his face.
"Coach, is that really necessary," Leo asked from the top of the bleachers. "I mean if you want me to show off my speed we can just go out to the track."
"Valdez, if only your legs moved as fast as your mouth did," Coach told him, "You can come down here and give me thirty." Annabeth heard Leo grumble something as he made his way down the bleachers and she also heard some snickers from the other kids on the football team. "The rest of you can get ready on the line," Coach Hedge told them and then everyone made their way to the baseline of the basketball court. Annabeth flew through the first fifty without any trouble and most other people did. Drew and Rachel both stopped at forty-five, complaining that their hamstrings hurt. The thirty laps went by and more and more people started to die off, but Annabeth still felt fine. Right as they reached a hundred Annabeth only heard one pair of footsteps racing along with her.
She looked over to see Percy still in the race and he seemed to be in the same state as her. She didn't doubt his physical abilities being the athlete he was but she was surprised how little fatigued he seemed. As she looked over she met his eyes and he gave her a small nod of acknowledgement. They both steadied themselves on the line, knowing that it would only get harder from here. Twenty laps later Annabeth's breathing started to become heavier and she saw that Percy felt the same. After another ten laps Percy placed his hands on his knees and shook his head as he wiped the swipe from his forehead.
"Come on Percy you got this," Jason yelled out and Annabeth smiled at the encouragement.
"I don't know how you do it," she heard Percy say to her as he shook his head. "Winner of this next one takes it," he offered and Annabeth nodded. He smiled slightly and they both stood on the baseline and waited for the beep to send them. Right as the noise hit Annabeth took off from the line. She felt her muscles tighten as she ran and could tell she was fighting on fumes at this point. However, she did not quit as she continued to run, she was used to this kind of pain, and she enjoyed it. She finally crossed the line and looked over to see that Percy was only a few inches behind her. He grinned as he crossed the line and then nodded his head. "Well a deal is a deal," he told her as he gestured to the line.
Annabeth smirked as she went back to the line and Percy just sat down as he stretched out his legs. The beep went off again and Annabeth sprinted over and crossed the line with ease. She placed her hands on her knees and tried her best to remain upright as she caught her breath. Annabeth heard a few cheers and looked over to see her friends cheering for her. She smiled as she finally was able to stand up fully and looked across the floor to see that Percy was standing now. He was looking in her direction and smiled again as he looked over at her and offered her a thumbs up. Although they may not talk that much, the two did share a common interest in giving their all when it came to sports. They both gave their all and left everything they had behind when they were competing, for both of them it took away all of their worries.
Ayo, it's me, hopefully everyone enjoyed the first chapter of the story that could possibly turn into something enjoyable. This is attempt number two because attempt number one did not fly well. It was pointed out to me that I basically copied a good portion of Another Wise Girl xx had already done. Thankfully they pointed this out and I realized how shitty of a person I was doing that so I quickly removed it and gave it another shot. That is why I ask people to point out if I copy anything because I don't want to be a shitty person. I will try my best to not copy and if I do that too much then I'll just scrap the story and leave it be.
Anyways with all of that mumbo jumbo mess out of the way please leave any critiques that you may have, even if you don't continue to follow the story. It just helps me out since I am not the best writer, both story wise and grammatically. Also in terms of updating schedule I cannot promise anything. It is more so if I have the time and/or effort to do so. But as long as I am having fun with writing, then I will always post. Thankfully I have made the discovery that chapters around the three thousand work mark are easier to crunch out even if I am tired. So I will most likely stay with this word count or similar, unless I just have a writing spree and several ideas for one chapter. As always if you have any thoughts, comments, and/or reviews please leave them as they are always helpful and peace out!
