Luna discovers an abandoned bird, and she decides to help it survive and they become good friends.
Luna was walking along the edge of the forest on the castle grounds. It was lonelier than ever. She hated the Carrows, hated the longing for all her missing friends to return. 'What kind of Ravenclaw can't help think of a solution? How can I be stuck here, not being able to help Harry, or anyone else?' she thought. With a sigh, she sat down on a rock, looking into the forest. The Forbidden Forest had been one of her father's favourite things about forest and all the mysterious beings that resided so close to them, yet in a world all their own.
'It couldn't hurt,' she reasoned, staring as far as she could down the small dirt pathway. 'Could it?'
"It will start snowing soon," Luna said out loud, her words echoing as her feet led her into the woods. She rubbed her arms when a cool breeze hit her.
She hadn't been traveling for long when Luna heard a noise. She grasped her wand and looked around for its source. It was the cry of a baby bird. She spotted the nest, seemingly having been knocked from the tree. Luna looked around for the cause. She understood that a snake had attacked the nest when she saw shadows of a large bird fighting the long yellow snake. She couldn't save the mother, but, in the upturned nest, one of the babies still lived. She couldn't tell in the darkness what type of bird the mother had been, but it was large, so she suspected it could be an owl.
With the mother's disappearance, Luna knelt down beside the small crying creature. "Hi, little one," she said softly. The small featherless baby looked at her curiously, and let out another small shriek.
"I bet you're hungry," Luna said. She saw the sharp beak. "You are definitely a bird of prey."
She grabbed a twig and started digging a patch in the ground, looking for worms to feed the baby. "I bet you are a girl," she spoke, filling up the eerie silence of the forest. The chick was white as snow and had a black beak that despite her size, looked quite formidable. An hour or so later, Luna had gathered worms and placed them in her hat. Luna removed her scarf with a shiver, and after handing the bird a couple of worms, which she seemed content to eat. She gently picked up the chick, not wanting to startle it, or cause it to snap at her with the sharp beak.
It wasn't long after that Luna discovered the chick was an eagle. She had done a bit of research, and despite knowing that an eagle wouldn't stay the snowy white the chick was, Luna decided to call her Snowflake. During this time, Luna and Neville decided that the DA should rise again, and as Snowflake grew, so did the influence of the DA on the students right under the noses of the Death Eaters and Headmaster Snape.
One day, Luna was standing outside on a ledge, and she knew it was time for Snowflake to learn to fly, so she did what the mother eagle would have. She threw Snowflake into the sky, holding her breath as the eagle flapped her wings, slightly startled at not being held anymore. She started to fall, and Luna gasped. 'Was it too soon?' she wondered, but just for a second, as Snowflake started to rise into the air. Luna clapped her hands together, and grinned. Snowflake was all grown up. Luna watched as Snowflake flew off into the Forbidden Forest, and she sighed. She felt her coin heat up. She glanced at it.
Emergency meeting - now.
It seemed like it was time for her to spread her wings as well, because just then, the saviour of the Wizarding world had returned to Hogwarts, and needed their help to win this war.
