Author's Headnote: Hey... for those of you expecting an update of RWBY: Festival of Blood, don't worry, it's not abandoned. For everyone else, this is going to be my... test fiction for a Ruby personality I am trying out. You see, I'm writing a Mass Effect/RWBY Crossover, however. I'm still trying to decide how I'd want to write Ruby in that fanfiction. Either as a Paragon or a Renegade. Problem is, I'm considering Renegade and I wouldn't know what a "Renegade Ruby" would be like. So, I'm writing this. This fanfiction will be centered around the classic Adaptational Jerkass trope. The main change here is that Ruby will be quite the prick towards other. Other than that, I will do by best not to tread on canon too much. The writing format will be similar to that of RWBY: Festival of Blood, on the other hand, which you should check out. As for the Title, I really can't come up with one... I don't want to do a "Every Rose has it's Thorns" thing, because that's well overused. I want to be creative with the title here. However, if you think a different name is better, let me know, though I won't take anything with a curse word.

Ruby the Renegade: Ruby Rose
City of Vale, 8:07 PM, Sunday, Downtown
Nice, friendly, amicable, kind-hearted. These words in no way are an accurate description to the Signal Academy student: Ruby Rose. The child of Summer Rose and Taiyang Xiao Long, she used to be a lot more happy and get-going as a small child. But than one day, her mother never came back on a secret mission, in which Ruby ended up becoming more distant. Her sister, Yang had made a promise to protect her. Unfortunately for Ruby, Yang was sick on Ruby's first day of school... so she was easy pickings for the school bullies on that day. However, she decided to fight back.
This would lead to the chain of events that lead to what would have become of Ruby today. Mean, distant, spiteful, and a full-on jerk to just about everyone, even her family. However, her family knows she still cares about them. She's just the prickly pinecone of her family.
Despite her attitude, she still wishes to help people. She aspires to be a huntress, just like her parents. However, unlike most of her aspiring career, she doesn't really cater to be friendly to people, nor does she plan on letting herself being vulnerable. So, she just either ignores, pushes aside, or straight out being a jerk to new people. It all depends on how they greet her. The students of Signal academy don't really bother talking to her. They view her as the quiet kid who prefers to work by herself. Well, it's not an inaccurate statement. Whenever she does a group project, she does all the work by herself because she can't really stand the people she's assigned to.
But no less, she is currently at a dust shop: From Dust till Dawn, reading a magazine about weapons. Weapons, unlike people, are better to be around, mostly because they don't talk. In addition, weapons have been in general nicer to her than any person she's met, besides her family. So, she more so has a respect for these tools of destruction. She always brings her favorite weapon with her, Crescent Rose. A bolt-action rifle which can be extended to a sniper-rifle, in addition it also has a scythe blade at the end, allowing for better melee combat. So, in addition for being a highly customizable bolt-action combat rifle, it's also a melee weapon.
She does consider getting a secondary weapon though, maybe a handgun that folds into a short-sword... or perhaps a sawed off-shotgun that's also an axe. She's currently listening to some instrumental classical music on her headphones. She always prefers classical music. Not the kind with opera and loud singing though. She isn't really fond of singing in her music.
However, some guys come in, tapping on Ruby's shoulders, she than swipes off the hand. Signaling that she doesn't want to talk. And than she feels a metal object being whacked on her back. She than turns around. They were common mercenary grunts... looking by it, they were from Junior's troop. They were carrying simple combat assault rifles. They were telling her to take off her headphones. It has to better be important, given she likes this symphony. She takes off her headphones and looks at them.
"What do you want?" Ruby asked in an annoyed tone.
"Hands in the air!" one of the grunts threatened.
Are they seriously trying to threaten her? She than looks around, they were robbing the store. Maybe in some alternate timeline would have asked if they were robbing. But the bags, the dust being drained, it was an obvious robbery. So, she figured she'd play vigilante. She went to lift one hand in the air in a fist shape, and than get Crescent Rose out of the other. After she fastened Crescent Rose into it's rifle shape on her right hand. Her left hand, the one she's raising in a fist shape. She than raises the middle finger and shoots the grunt. She than cocks the other rifle, and than transforms it into it's Scythe form.
"No." she responded. After shooting the grunt. No worries, she made sure the grunt is alive. She than, knocked the other grunt out of the window. The remaining grunts came after. But she manages to parry and dodge their attacks... which isn't very hard to do... considering that these guys have terrible aim. But no matter, a swing of the scythe here, and there. The grunts are taken out in a couple swings of her scythe, which means all that's left is the ginger guy in the white outfit and hat. The shopkeeper went outside to check out what's going on.
"Get back in the store. I got this." Ruby said, in an annoyed tone.
The shopkeeper had gone back to the store, waiting for Ruby to finish with fending off the robbers.
She than jumped and used Crescent Rose to jump herself onto the rooftop. Where she is met with the man in the hat.
"Worth every single penny, those guys." the man in the hat said... in which was responded by Ruby firing Crescent Rose in her rifle shot, although he dodged the bullet.
"Hey! Watch it!" The man said.
"Shut the hell up." Ruby responded with an angered tone, with her expression being her normal cranky and irritated self.
"Well, aren't you just a ball of sunshine and happiness?" the man taunted, with a smug and sarcastic tone.
"I don't have time for this." Ruby said, firing another shot... the man also somehow dodged that bullet too.
"What? Do you think I'm just going to stand there and take it?" the man said, smugly. Followed by firing a flare from his cane... she shot the flare, but it exploded. Thankfully her aura shielded most of the damage.
"Well, sorry little red. This is the part where our date ends, here's a little parting gift." the man said. He than, prepared to throw a flaming dust crystal, only for Ruby to fire a bullet at it. The bullet caused the dust crystal to blow up in the man's face. Ruby was relieved that he was still alive, although his clothes now have burn marks. She does not want to be charged for murder and appear on the news.
"Well... I should have seen that coming." the man said.
The man than jumped upon a chopper. In which he entered the pilot seat, and in his place a mysterious woman.
Ruby figured firing bullets directly at her would be a bad idea... so, instead, she aimed for the chopper tail. She fired a bullet from Crescent Rose at the tail of the bullet, but the woman than somehow... deflected it? What kind of aura technique is that?
As soon as the bullet was deflected, the woman than casted a fireball towards Ruby. Thankfully, a professional huntress stepped in and saved Ruby from some permanent scars. The huntress deflected the fireball with a telekinetic forcefield.
At a vein attempt, she tries to fire a round at the tail blades of the chopper... but it fails again. Since she overshot.
The pair of them got away... and she is left with the huntress.
May as well head back to patch and wait for Yang to coddle Ruby into giving her a farewell when she leaves for Beacon Academy.
That is until a shoulder of Ruby's is firmly grasped by the huntress. "you're coming with me, young girl." the huntress demanded.
Unfortunately... Ruby appears to have been apprehended by a would-be ally. As she is being taken to a police station.
City of Vale, 8:16 PM, Sunday, Vale Police Station
Ruby was in the interrogation room. Apprehended by the woman. She was confined to sit down, whilst the huntress was standing.
"Do you have any idea how much danger you put yourself into?" the huntress yelled.
"They were robbing a store! I couldn't just stand there and do nothing!" Ruby talked back.
"Did you just talk back to me?"
"Yes, that's a how conversation works." Ruby remarked... guess Yang really did rub on her.
"You're very rude. If it were up to me, I would have you sent home with a slap on the wrist. But someone wants to speak to you." the huntress scolded. She than moved out of the way.
And in her place. There was the Headmaster of Beacon Academy... Ozpin. To this day, Ruby is unsure whether that's his first or last name. If that's his last name... but that's irrelevant. He's the headmaster of Beacon Academy. And he came here with a glass of milk.
"You... have silver eyes." Ozpin stated.
"Uh huh, is the milk for me?" Ruby asked. Milk was one of her favorite drinks in the whole wide world, alongside milkshakes. Her favorite food is strawberries. So of course, that would mean she likes strawberry milk.
"Yes, the glass of milk is for you, miss Rose. If you tell me how you've managed to fight like that." Ozpin stated.
"I was tutored by my uncle. He's a teacher at Signal academy." Ruby responded nonchalantly. Even she knows better than to diss someone like him.
"I could only think of one man who fought like that. He was a dusty old crow."
"Yep, that's my uncle alright. Now can I have my milk?"
"Here you go." Ozpin said, sliding the glass of milk towards Ruby. She than takes a sip of the milk. "Before you go... do you know who I am?"
"You're the headmaster of Beacon Academy, Professor Ozpin."
"Some people refer to me as 'Headmaster Ozpin', but I do not care eitherway."
"So... why is that you wanted to see me?"
"There is an open spot for attendence and I was wondering you could fill the gap."
"I've always wanted to be a huntress, because I like helping people. Talking to them is another story."
"That would just mean you'd focus more on your studies." Ozpin joked.
Ruby sighed.
"My offer stands, would you like to attend my school?" Ozpin asked.
"Very well, I accept." Ruby said, in a passive tone.
Bullhead, 11:00 AM, Monday, From Vale to Beacon
Ruby was aboard the bullhead. With all these people here... chatting and stuff. Ruby was staying distant. Even from Yang. She didn't bother oggling their weapons, since that would mean Ruby would have to get near and talk to people... in which Ruby would not want to do.
And of course... she has to board the same bullhead as Yang. Yang is her sister; she cares for Yang just as Yang cares for Ruby... but Ruby tends to find her annoying at times.
"Ruby? Is that you? Can't believe my baby sister is going to Beacon!" Yang said in excitement.
"Ya ya, keep your panties on, Yang." Ruby said in a dismissive tone.
"Oh, come on, don't tell me you're not excited to be here!"
"I am, I just don't smile and be swingy swingy around it."
"Cheer up Rudy, it's okay to show a smile once in awhile!"
"Please stop calling me that."
"Only when you turn that frown upside down!"
This was one of those times. No, she will not 'turn that frown upside down'. There's a good reason to why Ruby is never in a good mood. Her mother is most likely dead and she has intense trust issues. However, this makes her as Yang called it: 'a living grimm magnet.' she can handle a couple of beowulves, they're typically sliced in half in one-shot. Because of this, Ruby's fighting stance is a bit more on the defensive, preparing for counters when she's not making an initial attack.
When it comes to people... well. She makes a clear rule that the only ones meeting the edge her scythe are grimm. Even when taking justice to her own hands, she doesn't kill. Nor does she mortally injure someone to a degree where they'd end up wishing they'd die. She has standards, this by no means makes her soft.
But while she was lost in thought whilst Yang was ranting about making friends... and getting out of her shell... and trying to be nice for once...
But that was corrected when the television went on. The news reporter, Lisa Lavender was reporting on a faunas rights protest being interrupted by the White Fang. She's heard of the White Fang, they're a terrorist organization that kills humans and robs Dust shops and trains relentlessly. The reporter than switches the topic about... Roman Torchwick, who looks exactly like the man Ruby fought last night.
The television went black. And behind her was a hologram of the huntress she encountered last night. Her name is apparently Glynda Goodwitch, and she's a teacher here. Mostly to welcome students to Beacon Academy. Ruby scuffs during the hologram speech.
And than some guy barfed next to her... he had blonde hair and blue eyes, along with wearing a casual outfit with armor over it. thankfully there was no mess on her clothes, otherwise... she would have made a scene. But her eyes were twitching just from the thought of it. Yang than dragged her away from him.
"Hey, it's your first day at a new school, I don't want you to make an enemy this early." Yang stated.
"Yang. He was this close to get his vomit on my shoe, of course I would be mad at him." Ruby said in an irritated tone.
"That's a fair point, but still... you should try to focus on making friends. Like I keep saying... for like, since you've first started school!"
"Why should I bother?"
"Maybe because it's good for growing girls to get out and have fun instead of being kept up in a dark room training and tinkering weapons."
"At least I study for my tests instead of electing to have parties at someone else's house."
"Hey hey, Ruby. Let's not make this personal."
"This conversation is over."
Beacon Academy, 11:30 AM, Monday, Beacon Courtyard
Ruby was impressed when she first saw it. It was large. Too large in fact, she doesn't even know where to go. The greenery and that giant statue is beautiful to look at though. Although she's not here to sightsee, nor is she here to look at Yang scoping out boys... or girls... Ruby doesn't know what Yang prefers, nor does she care. Yang than poked Ruby's shoulder, which means she wants to talk to her.
"Come on Ruby, aren't you a bit excited to see the weapons?" Yang asked.
"I like weapons. That doesn't mean I'll just swoop in and go near people. I respect people's spaces for one, so as long as they respect mine." Ruby stated.
"Well. That's an improvement."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"No offense Rubes, but you're kind of a prick."
"Why does that matter? I'm here to learn to fight monsters and get an education. Friends are just a distraction."
"Well, aren't you just a little ball of sunshine and happiness?" Yang said sarcastically.
"Shut the hell up, Yang." Ruby said in an annoyed tone.
"I love you too, now if you excuse me... I'll be catching up with my friends. Don't start a fight while I'm gone."
Yang left and Ruby was all by herself... where she made a quiet growl after Yang ditching her. Although if she is to be in a group, she well hopes that she's with Yang, because there's no way she'd work with anyone else.
And that's when lost in thought, she gets tripped and fell over some luggage. She than sees the face of some girl. Ruby was knocked over by this girl on the ground. She was incrediblty pale, had white hair and blue eyes, along with a scar on her left eye. She was wearing a white dress, alongside a jacket.
"Watch where you're going, asshat!" Ruby yelled at the girl. Then proceeded to get up.
"Excuse me?" the girl responded in disgust. "You were in MY way!"
"I was here first. You should have at least warned me!"
"Why should I? I was clearly hauling my luggage!"
"Ya, princess. Hauling your own luggage, what a big girl, doing that. What's next? You're going to learn to clean yourself?"
"I can very well clean myself!"
"If you excuse me, I'll be leaving now."
"At least help me pick up my luggage, you dolt!"
"You're the dumbass, thinking you need all that clothes!"
"There is dust in these briefcases!"
"And that's your problem, not mine. So, pick up your luggage and cause a crater somewhere else."
"Excuse me? I'll have you know I know how to handle dust!"
"Welp, I'm done talking to you." Ruby said, punching the girl in the right eye with her left fist. The girl was than knocked down to the ground with a black eye.
"She had it coming." another girl said. She was sitting on a bench reading a book, wearing a black and white getup, with a black bow on her head, which was twitching. She had black hair and amber eyes.
"uh huh... doesn't take a genius to see that she's just a bitch." Ruby stated.
"That 'bitch' is the heiress of the Schnee Dust Company, Weiss Schnee. And you just gave her a black eye." the black-themed girl said.
"Aura will heal her up. And besides, she deserved it."
"That she does..."
"I'll be heading elsewhere now. Please don't bother me again!" Ruby said, leaving.
She was most likely busy, what else would explain her dismissive attitude, that or she was plain anti-social. And what's with that bow? She decides not to ask and be polite about it.
As for Weiss Schnee... well, Ruby just outright hates her. She's far by the most insufferable being she's ever met. Who does she think she is? Why is she even here? She could just be working at a desk job, or be a pop-star. Even than, Ruby would not listen to any of her songs. Why would someone of her status risk her life to be a huntress? Maybe to prove a point or something? Either way, Ruby doubts she has the skill to last long.
As she was walking to find where everyone is supposed to go. That was until she bumped into vomit boy. This is the second time they meet, and already she has a negative connotation with him.
"Go away, vomit boy." Ruby said, in a dismissive tone, heading away from him.
"Hey! I'm sorry for throwing up on you!" Vomit boy said, in a worried tone. Racing up towards facing her.
Ruby responded simply by flipping the bird at him. She ignored him and continued to pace around the courtyard.
Three minutes later... she notices she's being followed by him. Which is honestly putting her in a worse mood than the Schnee did.
"Why are you following me?" Ruby asked angerly.
"I don't know where I'm supposed to go... I'm a student here and I..." vomit boy said, before being interrupted.
"Shut. The. Hell. Up. I gave you a hand signal as an obvious sign of what I want you to do, go do that."
"You're lost too, aren't you?"
"Do you want a black eye? Unless the next words out of your mouth are asking directions for where first years are to go, I suggest you keep your mouth shut."
The boy than squealed.
Ruby was than looking for somewhere to go... a sign... something... anything... also for vomit boy to stop breathing down her neck. Can't she just catch a break and not have to deal with people?
Luckily, there was someone that caught the guy's attention. He went toward some Rabbit faunas. Ruby couldn't help but eavesdrop on the conversation.
"Excuse me? Do you know where first year-students are supposed to be headed?" vomit boy asked.
"Oh? You're new! I've had the same problem back at my first year. You're supposed to go to the auditorium!" The rabbit faunas answered.
"Where is that?"
"Oh, it's around this way, near the main building." The rabbit faunas said, pointing an arrow towards a direction.
"Thank you!" vomit boy said.
"Oh? Who is that girl over there? She's your sister?"
"Thankfully no, she's just an incredibly rude child that I was following."
"Why were you following her?"
"I was lost and I didn't know where I was heading. The most attention she gave me was a threat and the middle finger."
"Wow, sounds like she's not a very good person to be around."
"Yep. Thanks for the directions." the boy said, heading toward the auditorium.
Ruby was heading toward the auditorium; no doubt Yang was there waiting for her. So, Ruby was heading toward there... at least she can tolerate being near Yang. She is family after all, and thus familiar to her.
Beacon Academy, 11:52 AM, Monday, Beacon Auditorium
It was a large empty room, with a stage. It also had a green theme to it; the floor was tiled and grey. And the walls were a diluted shade of green. The stage was empty... for now that is... chances are there's a speech waiting at 12 PM.
Ruby was looking around for Yang, with vomit boy following her.
"Why are you still following me?" Ruby interrogated.
"Honestly... I've got no friends here, and you're the only first-year student that's talked to me." vomit boy stated.
"So... why don't you... go talk to someone else?"
"Riiight... do you want to try and be nice for once?"
"How about you get out of my sight before I give you a black eye!"
"Alright, alright, I'm going!" vomit boy said, walking away from Ruby.
"Hey, Ruby! I saved you a spot!" Yang yelled.
"About time!" Ruby said, using her semblance towards Yang. Ruby is not known for her patience.
"Careful. You're gonna leave a mess!" Yang said, commenting about the rose petals left behind by her semblance.
"I'm not cleaning it up." Ruby stated.
Yang sighed. "Well, did you at least not start a fight?" she asked.
"The fight was averted; I punched some snobby rich girl down to the ground." Ruby said.
"That still counts, Ruby. You know I can't have you starting fights, I can't always be there to help you get out of trouble!" Yang said.
"I can assure you; she deserved that black eye."
"You gave her a BLACK EYE!?" Yang said, with her eyes briefly glowing red.
"You wouldn't get it; you didn't witness the event." Ruby said dismissively.
"YOU!" Weiss yelled, walking towards Ruby. After a couple of seconds, she was now standing next to Ruby and Yang. Her black eye is still visible, along with it being slightly closed from the damage Ruby gave it.
"Oh great, you again. Do yourself a favor and go find someone else to hold your luggage." Ruby said rudely.
"This started over luggage?" Yang asked.
"She knocked over my luggage by not getting out of the way!" Weiss said.
"You ran into me; you could easily just move!" Ruby objected.
"It sounds like you got off the wrong foot, how about you two start all over and be friends?" Yang asked.
"That's not going to happen." Ruby answered.
"She gave me a black eye; I won't forgive her." Weiss stated.
"See? You're already agreeing on something!" Yang said, trying to make the best of situation.
"What? Do you think just because we agree on something? We're going to be suddenly painting eachother's nails, shopping for clothes, and talking about cute-" Weiss said, before being interrupted by the speakers.
"Ahem... I'll get straight to the point. You are here on a quest for knowledge. To sharpen your current skills, and add new ones among them. Along with improving your craft. And when you finish your quest, you will be on a new one, to protect the people of Remnant. But I look here and I do not see potential defenders of the world, I see wasted potential, without any purpose or direction. You came here for knowledge, but knowledge alone is not enough, it is up to you to reach that potential, or fail doing so." Ozpin announced from the speaker. Most people are commenting that the speech was a downer. However, Ruby simply does not care.
Ozpin walked off the stage, and in his place is Glynda Goodwitch. "All first-year students are to attend the ballroom, directions toward it are provided. You will be provided food and rest there tonight; your initiation begins tomorrow." Glynda announced.
Beacon Academy, 8:00 PM, Monday, Ballroom
The Beacon Ballroom is a large area, with two bathrooms. This place is designed for dances and balls, obviously. But given it's size, it's utilized as a placeholder resting place for first-year students. There are vast windows on the walls, along with chandeliers. The floors are covered in sleeping bags.
Ruby was next to her sister for the whole thing... trying to sleep. Yang on the other hand... was eyeing... something. But it doesn't matter, Ruby was listening to classical music with her headphones on...
That is until Yang took them off.
"Yang! I'm trying to sleep!" Ruby yelled.
"Come on, basically every student is in our year is here, maybe it's the oppurtunity to make some friends?" Yang suggested.
"And I keep telling you, no. I'm not going to waste time with friends."
"You're going to be on a team of four huntsmen Ruby, you're going to need to learn to get along with people. Fighting monsters isn't just some school project. You can't do all the work by yourself."
"Well. We don't have our teams, so I don't see much of a point with being chummy to anyone."
"Come on, is there someone you've talked to that you haven't been rude to."
Ruby was trying to think... nope, she's been rude to just about every student she's met so far.
"Nope." Ruby said.
"Anyone you haven't insulted?" Yang asked.
"Well, there was one, but she was anti-social, so I kept at a distance."
"You're also anti-social, Ruby."
"That doesn't mean we'll be friends."
"Can you keep it down? I'm trying to sleep!" Weiss yelled.
After she said that, a light had gone out. Which means finally, Ruby can get some shut eye. Hopefully the initiation won't be bothersome.
Author's Footnote: And that's the chapter. What do you think of this Ruby? Personally, I do not like her. She is not a good person. Morally correct, but she's a jerk. However, I am way to interested in this Ruby to just ditch this fanwork and make it a one-shot. As for pairings, I currently do not have any plans to pair up this particular Ruby with a romantic relationship... mostly because I honestly cannot see her in relationship like that unless it's some kind of horny rivalry. So, see ya next chapter.
