Jade marched towards her front door, fuming over the latest, and most likely last, breakup with Beck. 'He took her side, again.' She thought, the memory that had been on replay, over and over, the entire time she drove home. 'He took her side. I-I wasn't even trying to hurt her. Honestly, I was trying to help. But no, he had to take me to task, saying I was way out of line, all while she sat there, giving me those sympathetic eyes, like she knew this was the end.'
The door shook as she slammed it, vibrating the frame to the point where Jade might have worried that the safety door would come loose, if she cared about any of that. "Why does he always take her side?" Jade moaned as she tried to make her way to her room.
"What was that?" June West, her mother, asked. Her mother hadn't changed her name, despite the years since the divorce. Jade suspected her mother loved her father, but the man was so distant, so cold. It confused the pale girl how anyone could hold onto even the smallest amount of love for that man, even as she desperately wanted his approval.
"Beck broke up with me. Again!" Jade huffed, trying to fight back the tears. Her mother may be one of the few people she trusted to see her cry, but that didn't mean she was going to break down here in the entryway. At the very least her brother, Baron, would hear, and he would want her to share her feelings. 'Stupid therapy. How many fourteen year old boys talk about their feelings?'
"And why did he break up with you?" June pushed.
"Because I suggested that Vega crash in a simulator first, before she went out driving in the streets. I even knew of a good one, one that had realistic blood and gore for when she ran over the elementary school." Jade explained. "I suggested we rent her some time on it in order to save lives. And naturally, for whatever reason, she took it as me saying she was an unsafe driver. Mom, she hit an old lady. During her drivers training, she hit an old lady. That's not that hard a target to miss."
"Yes, it does sound like you were teasing this Vega girl." June said. Jade started to protest, but her mother held up her hand. "I know that simulator, the one at Dave and Busters. You played it that one time, remember." A deep sigh. "I remember how you chucked every time you ran someone over. Why that simulator let you back the car up to look at the carnage, I'll never know."
"So you can see I was in the right, right?" Jade asked.
"I also know you fell for a fair man, Jade." June replied. "That means he's not always gonna take your side."
"I just wish he would occasionally." Jade groaned.
"You have to admit, you're often in the wrong." Her mother said, but her voice was calm and soothing. "Jade, I know you were trying to help. I also know you were planning on letting her use you pass, to save her a LOT of money. I mean, without that pass, it's a dollar a minute, ten minutes at a time. You have how much time earned?"
"That's not important." Jade groaned. "I was trying to help, but no one was willing to hear my side of things, and now Beck is off with HER, comforting her while they drive out to Sinjin's beach house."
"And you didn't go why?" Her mother asked.
"Because Beck and I just broke up. No way I was welcome there. Hell, even Cat was looking at me like I just ate a kitten." Jade moaned as she checked her phone. "Great, Tori texted while I was driving home, and insisted I come with. But noo, it's too late, because I'm already at home, and..." She stopped, paling as a feeling washed over her, some insight she didn't quite understand. "Mom, something happened to them. I-I gotta, I don't know. They..." Jade dropped to her knees.
"Easy Jade, why don't we try calling them, see whats going on?" June suggested, taking Jade's cell phone. The goth was shaken by something, and June knew that it was possible that Jade was aware of more then the poor girl was ready to understand.
"Beck, everything okay?" She asked, putting the phone on speaker.
"Just Fine." Beck's voice cut through Jade's fears. "We're almost at Sinjin's beach house, and we're gonna just enjoy the evening from there. Sinjin promised he'd be there, making sure we had everything we needed to enjoy a small, quiet get together."
"And let Jade know she's totally invited." Tori's voice, soft from being a distance from the phone, added to the call.
"Like we want that grunge." Trina said.
"Guys!' Beck calmed down the chattter. "Tell her I'll text her the directions, and..."
His conversation was halted with the sound of screeching tires, followed by swearing from the various people in Andre's SUV. Next, an odd sound echoed through the phone line. It was a sound Jade hadn't really heard before, but somehow knew was a sonic stunner going off. That sound ended with the phone fizzling out, the call dropped.
"BECK!" She screamed.
Almost as if on cue, the front door slammer open, and Malcolm West stormed in, followed by his second wife, Mary, and their young son, Carl. "Jade get up. No time for any coddling. Somethings happening, and we need to go protect your friends."
"THEY TOOK BECK!" Jade screamed.
"They weren't after him." Malcolm said, not giving her a moment. "They won't hurt him, or the others. No, I think they might need them. Otherwise, they'd have just destroyed the car. How did they get so close without me knowing? Must be using some kind of clouding technique." He shook his head, clearing his thoughts. "No mater, cause they aren't planning on taking Holly alive, so we need to get to her, save her, or those people will have no reason for keeping your friends alive. Jade, come! Baron, protect your Mary, mother, and your brother. June, take them to our cabin in the hills, and stay there. I'll try to send Holly and David to you." He barked the orders like he expected them to be followed.
Everyone but Jade and her brother, Baron, were moving, racing to follow their instructions. Mary already had a packed overnight bag, something Jade remembered her father insisted they all have, just in case of an emergency. Her own was being tossed to her by June, while Baron sat there, as stunned as his sister.
"It's happening, isn't it?" He asked. "I feel it. Things are in motion now, the future is fluid, changing. What you do now may determine the lives of… owe, that's too many lives to think about." His hand rose to his head, as he tried to work though something that Jade might have thought was a migraine if she didn't, somehow, know better.
"I knew you had a gift for prophesy. I just had no idea how deep it went." Malcolm said, his voice showing a touch of wonder. "Jade, we're moving. No time to worry, it's time to act. Come, NOW!"
Jade, helped up by her mother, followed behind her father as they raced to his car. Once inside, he handed her a flashlight like device, reminiscent of a different electrical device she knew her mother owned, and tried to hide from her children. However, this one was oddly familiar. "Feels right, right? I remember when you made that one, and it's twin. I'll give you the other once I know your abilities are working."
His car, a 2011 Nissan Leaf with some slight modifications (Jade had never seen him charge it), was already racing down the streets at truly break neck speeds before Jade was aware of him starting it up. He blew through lights, avoiding cars and trouble by the narrowest of margins. Jade had never made the trek from her place to the Vega home in such a short time, and it was almost too late.
The house was under attack. Damage from weapons Jade should have believed were science fiction mixed with bullets, tearing the structure apart. The car had barely stopped when her father yanked the door open and activated his own weapon, a flashlight like device like hers that now resembled the swords the Red Knights used in Galaxy Wars. A good two and a half to three feet of energy blade sliced through the air, while the weapon hummed in a way more reminiscent of her mothers private toy.
"Jade, follow my lead and try not to die. Trust your instincts and training, and help me deal with these people. We have to rescue the princess." Malcolm ordered, not bothering to even look backwards. With that, he leaped, literally, across the twenty plus feet between himself and the attackers, entering combat with a flourish. His red blade sliced between them, acting as both weapon and shield.
Jade hesitated, fear rising to try and hold her back. Bullets tore into the car behind her, deflecting off what was supposed to be a wax seal intended to prevent rust. Jade's hand moved on it's own, and hers own blade sprang to life, preventing any of the many shots aimed towards her from striking. The pale girl didn't have the time to think about how she was doing that, she was just reacting, as a faded memory of some hovering sphere that shot bolts of pain lingered deep in her memories.
Jade reacted, racing towards the men still outside, knowing that they had worse weapons hidden from view, and not wanting any of those used against her father. With a quick motion, she sliced weapons, destroying threats as she made her way across the battlefield. Two panel trucks sat on the road, obviously the men's method of transport. Jade destroyed there tires, using her glowing red blade to slice through everything like she was just moving her arms. Then, with a flick of her wrist, the one not holding a weapon she hurled a man away from her. A new power was calling out from within her, screaming to be used, and then men were flung around, slamming into solid objects on all sides. Both trucks rocked from the impact of men tossed about like paper dolls in a strong wind. Jade knew she was doing something wrong, realizing she forgot to point, letting the power work through her without Physical direction.
The pale, somewhat confused girl dominated the outside battle field, quickly subduing all threats. It was time to go inside, help her father.
The goth quickly made her way into the home, and found herself in a different world. Her father wasn't concerned about the niceties of life, only finding and saving Holly. There were bodies everywhere, many cut in to pieces. Limbs scattered near the dying or dead. She had to hold back an initial vomit reflex when she smelt the strong odor of burnt human flesh, a side effect of the swords slicing through the various people her father had come across. It was like the goriest of her horror films, but this time it was real, in front of her, and oddly, missing the gallons of blood that normally goes with that level of dismemberment.
"Jade, what took you so long?" Her father asked, walking out of a doorway down the first floor hall. The Vega's followed him close behind.
"I had to subdue the guys outside." Jade defended herself.
"Yea, I see." Malcolm said, glancing out the french doors. "Of course, it wouldn't have taken nearly as long if you'd bothered to just kill them. Jade, we're on a time crunch here. The time you took to disarm, then disable them, that was time one or more of those guys could have used to call in for help, maybe call in a strike on their position, destroying the house and the Vega's with it. Now, go to the car, and guard the Vega family. I'm gonna get their emergency bags, then we'll be heading out to Controls house. She'll take them to a safe place while we go after their girls."
"And Cat." Jade added. "And Beck, and the others."
"If there's time." Her father said. "Now Go."
"Grey, take it easy on her." Holly said with a strangely warm tone. "This is new to her."
"I don't have time for her to figure this out along the way." Malcolm scoffed. "Holly, I thought I raised a psychotic killer. I'm actually disappointed I'm wrong."
Jade watched her father bound up stairs so cut up it was a miracle the "flying" stairs hadn't fallen already. Then, a few moments later, she led the way out to her fathers car. Her weapon, the energy sword, was held ready to defend her and the Vega parents from any perceived attacks. And now, in ways she'd never imagined, Jade was perceiving.
Looking down the street, the pale girl could tell the neighbors had been evacuated. Not just hidden away with their homes, in the hidden safe rooms so many of them had, but fully and silently evacuated. "Someone pulled the people from around here. Why?"
As she hesitated to think, even as the Vega's started to get into the Nissan, a car raced up the street, past empty houses and skidding to a stop just feet from her own. A tall, older man Jade hadn't really seen before lept out of the car, gun in hand, and moved towards the house. Her own weapon blazed back to life, and the strangers ducked behind a car.
"Ah, lieutenant Malone is here." Malcolm called from an upper story window. "If you can, come with us, and help guard Holly and her mate."
"You're with Grey?" The police officer asked Jade. "Must be his daughter." He decided, nodding to himself. "Okay, David, did you get a chance to grab a weapon. We'll need more firepower then just our handguns."
"We have two Gray Knights." Holly said. "We're fine."
"I grabbed one on the way out." David added. "Our attackers had em, and no genetic locks. Not much out here, however. Someone sliced and diced the blasters."
Jade was very aware of her father dropping from the upper story window with four bags in his hands. He landed softly, as if he hadn't fallen more then a foot, and tossed the bags towards Gary. The police officer caught two, staggering under the force of the throw, while David caught the other two. "I'll find you a weapon, then we need to head out."
"So what tipped you off we needed help?" David asked his partner slash friend.
"I heard an evacuation warning for this street, something about dangerous chemicals, and when I checked, of course, your house was right in the middle. And get this, only a couple of officers were assigned to oversee the evacuation. I'm thinking the guys who attacked you helped clear the streets, then moved in while you were preoccupied." Gary explained.
"Jade, there is an ancient race called the Vorlons, they are one of the oldest, and strongest races in this galaxy. When our ancestors moved here, the Vorlons told us we couldn't interfere in the development of less advanced species." Holly started to explain, even as the older woman got into the back seat of Malcolm's car.
"You sure you don't want the front seat?" Malcolm asked. Jade had watched him, at the blasted open front door, just reach towards the inside, and a large pistol like weapon flew to his hand. He presented that to Gary even as he questioned Misses Vega's choice of seating.
"Back here I can sit next to my husband." She explained. "Gary, you coming? I think we're going to Contriol's place."
"I'll meet you there." Gary said. "I'm gonna call this in, let them know it's over."
"Wait a few minutes." Malcolm instructed. He got into his car, glaring at his daughter until she got in beside him, and they drove off.
"Um, Why do you call my dad Grey?" Jade asked after about five minutes of driving in complete silence. Immediately, she added "Sorry, probably a bad time. Don't worry, I'm sure Tori and her sister are gonna be fine. We'll find them, rescue them. I… How the holy chiz did I do any of that chiz?"
"Greyson." Holly said. "Your fathers middle name is Greyson. As a kid, we didn't like calling him Mal, cause even to us it kinda meant bad. So we called him Grey instead. Kinda ironic, considering what he became."
"What is he?" Jade asked. "What the holy hell am I? I mean, I janked those guys up, and that's nothing compared to what dear old dad here did inside."
"You're a Gray Knight." Holly said. "An offshoot of Jedi, with a touch of darkness."
"She's not a knight yet." Malcolm corrected. "She's too soft to be dark, and doesn't have the inner light to be Jedi. But her power, that is impressive."
"She doesn't have to fall all the way." David snapped. "Remember what the spirit said. Jade didn't have to fall, just understand the darkness. She needs to have the light inside too, to help her ward off the corruption from the dark."
"I needed, need a weapon." Malcolm snapped back. "Your wife is my oldest and closest friend. I'm swore to protect her, and to do that, I need a weapon, not some mewing schoolgirl too shocked by the real world to do whats needed."
Jade felt so unloved in that moment, being called nothing more then a weapon. It burned, tearing her already fragile self esteem further apart. Part of her wanted to just leave, jump out of the car and roll, see if she survived or not. But as much as that painful ending might have appealed to her, several other things were holding her in her seat. Her father may think of her as a weapon, but he needed her, and that was a first. The Vegas were arguing in favor of her humanity, kinda. Maybe they saw her as a weapon, but she got the feeling that the kind of weapon they wanted had compassion. In fact, she could feel that compassion rolling off of the two people in the back, like waves that broke against her wall, yet some seeping in through cracks so small she could never have seen them. Compassion, sympathy, and maybe just a little gratitude. It offered a small buoyancy to her in the sea of painful emotions she felt pulling her under.
Then there was Beck. They were broken up, to the point where her new insight told her they were never ever getting back together. But that didn't change the fact that she loved him. Beck, and Cat, and Andre and Tori and even Robbie, she wanted to find them, see them all returned home safely. 'Then I can put this all behind me. Or, maybe I find myself someplace out there, where no one knows me, and start over. Yea, someplace where I can just be Jade, a dark-natured girl looking for acceptance…'
"JADE!" Malcolm said, his voice loud and clear, snapping her out of her thoughts. "Whatever your thinking about, forget it. This family owes it's allegiances to the Valorum family, specifically the princess Holly Valorum, now Vega. Whatever thoughts you might be having about running away, let them go. We have work to do."
"Grey..." Holly's voice was soft, soothing.
"Sorry, but she is my child, my responsibility." Malcolm informed her. "I'll decide whats best for her. Jade's strong, strong enough to maybe, perhaps, help end this war and restore you to your former place in the galaxy. She just needs to snap out of whatever dreams she's been holding onto and accept her destiny."
"As a warrior." David said. "Maybe a warrior is just a weapon to you, but to me, they have something no weapon can have, judgment. And if you say judgment is over rated, I'll remind you how important it is on the streets, on the battlefield, everywhere. No, you need this weapon to be able to make snap decisions, and that's the trait of a warrior, not some mindless weapon."
"If she were mindless, I'd get less arguments." Malcolm argued. "But you're right. I'd have had less use for Jade then a blaster if she lacked intelligence. Jade's smart, I can see it in her many revenge plots. Weak, trying to humiliate instead of harm, but I appreciated the situation. Humiliation was sufficient, and avoided getting her into too much trouble with the school."
"Glad you appreciated something I did." Jade drolled out.
"But if she is a warrior, she'll have to step up her game, not be so concerned about killing the people trying to hurt you, or even the ones trying to kill her." Mister West continued. "Lord knows she's a fair distance from being a knight."
"Who said I wanted to be a knight?" Jade snapped.
"And that's why we don't include you in the adult conversation." Her father replied with a dark smirk. "Look, we're almost there. I expect control will be a bit upset at this news..." He let his voice fade.
Jade looked outside again, realizing why the scenery around her felt so familiar. The drive may have been round about, but it was a path she often took when she wanted to calm down, or just enjoy the evening. Now, at their goal, she understood why. It was Beck's parents home, with his trailer still in the driveway, right in front. "Beck's dad is control?" She marveled.

Posted as an original because there are no Star Wars characters used in it, or even the setting. Just Jedi lore, kinda.
Okay, I wrote this story years ago, before "Rise of Skywalker", then put it on the back shelf to see what changed in that universe before deciding to revisit the story recently. I no longer care about Disney's version of the Star War universe, cause they did Rise of Skywalker. Besides, this story borrows and modifies Jedi lore, but is unique in it's own way. Anyways, enjoy.
I have at least ten chapters to edit, and no fudging time, so… Lets see how quickly I can post. Hoping for once per week, but we'll see.
Review?
