Introduction:

Elizabeth woke up to see her maid, Annie softly shaking her.

"Your majesty, I regret to inform you that the King has just passed away".

Elizabeth bolted up. This couldn't be, Nathan was young, fifty six years old, he was too young to die. Thirty years of marriage was not enough, they were meant to grow old together as Nathan's parents had.

"Please no, please tell me you misspoke Annie, Annie?", Elizabeth pleaded, tears forming in her eyes. Annie bowed and slowly shook her head, as tears threatened to fall from her own eyes.

Elizabeth ran to Nathan's room, ignoring every look or stare from the servants. It was clear that not many knew of this tragic news. As she burst into the door, she saw him lying there. His hands were placed over his chest, one lying over the other, and he looked so pale, but so relaxed, so comfortable, almost as if he was in a deep sleep.

"Oh Nathan, Nathan my darling", Elizabeth spoke between tears. Elizabeth screamed and wailed, begging for her husband's butler to help the King, to help her, to bring Nathan back to her.

After an hour of crying at her husband's bedside, Elizabeth had cried all her tears for now at least. She let the doctors enter Nathan's room to confirm what was blatantly obvious in her eyes. Annie came and escorted Elizabeth back to her own room and helped her change into her black mourning attire.

After eating a small breakfast, Elizabeth returned to her husband's bedside, brushing back a piece of his hair that had fallen, that curl in his hair that she had loved. She found herself at a loss for words. Everything had happened so quickly, she was no longer the Queen, just a queen, like her mother in law, and her mother in law before her. Elizabeth had never felt more alone, sitting there, staring at her beloved, her soulmate, the love of her life.

She would laugh in a few years, remembering how he tormented her in their younger years, or how shy she got when he was in the same room as her, their wedding day, the look on her husband's face when he first met their children. Now they were just memories and soon, she knew that she would be the only one to remember them as memories, not as a story, told through the generations. Nathan was, and will forever be her lifetime and their love story was one of the greatest love stories of the century, if not the greatest.

As she gently rubbed Nathan's hand, Elizabeth whispered the last words she would ever say to her husband,

"My darling, we are out of time".

AN: Thank you for reading my story! This is my first FanFiction so constructive criticism would be much appreciated! Incase anyone's confused, my story is set in England for the most part. The Grants are the British Royal Family, instead of the current Windsor Family. My story is set around 1910s-1920s, I'm not 100% sure on the exact year so I will be taking some historical liberties! (If that is a thing?)

Apologies that this chapter is short, the next few might be too as i'm just introducing the characters and setting up the plot! This story is "starting at the end" but the next chapter is going back in time 33 years!

This story is completely separate from the storyline of the show but it will include our favourite characters! Elizabeth and Nathan will not be the exact same as the show but I will try and keep them fairly similar. Elizabeth has never been married, which means no Little Jack (I am sorry I do love him) and no Allie also (For now ;) Hope that doesn't give away too much!) So please enjoy this story and remember these characters were not brought up on the frontier, but in a world of lavish society! However, both of our main characters don't 100% love the idea of it. I'm sorry this author's note is so long, I just wanted to clear that up with everyone as we begin this story! Enjoy!

Royal Family: King Archibald, Queen Mary, Princess Colleen and Prince Nathan (Titles may change)

Thatchers: William Thatcher, the 12th Earl of Kinallen, Countess Grace of Kinallen, Lady Viola Davies, Lady Elizabeth Thatcher and Lady Julie Thatcher (Titles may change)

Other characters will follow as the story progresses!
