This is a Bilbo and Thorin III fic. As in Dain's son Thorin not Thorin Oakenshield, which may be a little confusing but I'm planning on giving him a nickname. This is just a fun sweet little fic. Planning on a few shortish chapters. It will be slash. This is a everyone lives/no body dies au, cause I like things happy. Also, ages etc might not be spot on, just roll with it, its fanfiction I hope you enjoy.
I do not own The Hobbit.
Chapter 1
Bilbo stumbled as he was pushed out of the way by yet another dwarf in too much of a hurry to notice a small hobbit trying to do his shopping. Bilbo let out an exasperated huff. Really, he wasn't so small that he couldn't be noticed. He made his way to the edge of the market and tried to avoid getting trampled by rude dwarves. It had been months since they had taken back Erebor, but everyone was so busy rebuilding and establishing Erebor as the Kingdom it had once been. Many dwarves had returned to the mountain, eager to return home after years of isolation. It made for a hustling hive of activity. Normally one of his friends would accompany him to the market and assist him with his shopping, but they had all been so busy lately.
Bilbo understood, there was so much for everyone to do but it did make for a rather lonely hobbit. Besides without one of the other dwarves from the company to accompany him, it was nearly impossible for him to complete his shopping.
He walked past a merchant selling some of the most beautiful fabrics he had ever seen. Oh, the wonderful clothes he could make with these. He reached out a hand to run over a forest green velvet when he was jostled and nearly knocked to the ground. He let out a yelp of surprise and pain as an elbow jabbed into his ribs and braced for impact as he stumbled, but before he hit the ground a large hand wrapped around his waist and pulled him close.
Bilbo blinked his eyes open, taking a moment to orient himself. What he found, was himself face to face with a strange dwarf.
A large dwarf, with a flowing auburn beard and long hair pulled back into beautiful braids.
"Are you OK?" the dwarf asked, concern clear in his voice.
Bilbo pulled back a little, straightening his braces, as he answered, "Oh, yes, thank you for the save. That could've been quite a nasty fall."
The dwarf nodded, though he didn't step back, and he didn't take his hand from around Bilbo's waist.
"You shouldn't be out here alone; dwarves are not known to be the most careful and patient of people."
Bilbo snorted at that. "Of that I'm already aware, trust me."
The dwarf grinned, his eyes crinkling in mirth.
"Would you allow me to accompany you while you shop and ensure those beautiful feet don't get trampled underfoot?"
Bilbo blushed lightly. He wasn't sure what to make of this dwarf, but he couldn't deny he could use the assistance.
"Oh alright, the help would be very much appreciated" Bilbo said gruffly, though he wore a little smile on his face. "I'm Bilbo" the hobbit said sticking out his hand to shake.
The dwarf's large hand engulfed his own, Bilbo could feel callus' against his palm.
"Thorin" the dwarf said, his tone deep and rough. "But everyone calls me Rin."
Bilbo paused for a moment, thrown a little by meeting another Thorin, but he supposed it was only logical that more then one dwarf had the name.
"I noticed you admiring the beautiful wares here" Rin said, indicating the shop Bilbo had been standing in front of. "Should we start here?"
"Oh yes" said Bilbo happily as he turned back and began examining the fine materials. "I am in a mood to sew some new clothes, and this material would be perfect."
Rin stood and stared in awe as the little hobbit babbled excitedly about all the things, he was going to make with the materials he was buying. He made sure to listen closely to every word, drinking in the happy smile and the soft voice like a dwarf dying of thirst. He had spotted the tiny creature being hustled and bustled along by the crowd, he persevered even when he was almost knocked down on multiple occasions. Rin knew who this hobbit was of course, though many others obviously hadn't heard the tale. This was Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit who had helped King Thorin reclaim Erebor. He should be being treated like a hero, instead he was barely able to get his shopping done. He frowned to himself. Where were all the hobbits' companions and why hadn't they made sure that Bilbo was safe? Why had they yet to tell the dwarves of Bilbo's heroic deeds so that he could receive the respect that he deserved.
He hadn't aimed to seek out the hobbit but had simply come upon him by chance. Rin had just arrived in Erebor and had been making his way to the mountain when he spotted chestnut curls bobbing though the crowd. He had felt a wave of anger wash through him when the hobbit had nearly been knocked down and decided to step in to offer assistance. He was very happy with how things had turned out, his arm wrapped around the delectable hobbit as they spent the morning shopping together.
After Bilbo had brought all the materials he wanted and had arranged for them to be delivered to his rooms in the mountain, they moved to another stall, selling buttons, then another selling seeds and all sorts of gardening equipment.
"I'm hoping to start a small garden you see" Bilbo explained as he held up a small packet of sunflower seeds.
Rin himself didn't much see the point of flowers, but if it made this little hobbit happy then he was all for it.
"What's your favourite kind of flower?" Rin asked as he helped Bilbo sort through the seeds, never straying far from his side.
Bilbo thought for a moment. "Probably an iris, they are just so beautiful."
Rin hummed in agreement, earning a small smile from the hobbit.
They continued on, with Rin holding Bilbo close, ensuring he was safe from the crowds.
Bilbo, to his surprise found that he didn't mind that a practical stranger had his arm wrapped around him. He felt safe and honestly it felt nice to have some company after the weeks of near isolation.
"Shall we get something to eat?" Bilbo asked, nodding to a group of stalls selling a variety of foods. Everything from crusty breads to hot stews or delicious looking lemon tarts.
Rin's stomach gurgled in response, forcing a bark of laughter out of Bilbo as they strolled towards a shop selling meat skewered on a stick.
Rin went to pay but Bilbo just pushed his hand down. Handing over a few coins and grabbing two long skewers, handing one to Rin.
"For your help and your company today" Bilbo said sincerely.
Rin stood frozen for a moment at the exceedingly kind gesture. This hobbit was something else.
"It was my pleasure" Rin said gruffly as he took the skewer, wrapping his free arm back around Bilbo and pulling him close as they walked back through the crowd.
"Are you staying nearby?" Bilbo asked as he wiped the dripping juices off his chin.
"I'm actually here to visit with my father, he is staying in the mountain at the moment."
Bilbo looked surprised for a moment.
"What's his name? I live in the mountain so there's a good chance I know him."
"It's Dain" Rin answered.
Bilbo spluttered for a moment, "Dain? As in Lord of the Iron Hills Dain?" The hobbit was truly shocked. His fingers twitching nervously through his soft curls.
"That's him. He sent for me, so here I stand."
"Well, we best not keep his Lordship waiting" Bilbo said with a tight smile that caused Rin to narrow his eyes in concern. Was Bilbo afraid of his father? His father could be rather stern but was truly a teddy bear under it all. Well be it, a large, muscular, armour wearing teddy bear. He didn't put up any resistance as the hobbit started leading him toward the mountain.
As they drew nearer Rin felt his fingers twitch, he didn't want to let Bilbo go.
"Where are all your companions, little one? It's not safe for you to wander the market alone, you could be trampled to death."
Bilbo bristled, but this only caused Rin to smile, the hobbit looked like an angry cat with his fur standing up.
"I am perfectly capable of going to the market on my own" Bilbo sniffed. "Besides, everyone is so busy at the moment, I- I had no one to go with." He finished quietly.
Rin frowned at that. "Well, if you ever want some company come find me, I would be happy to accompany you."
Bilbo smiled brightly, "I might just take you up on that."
They had now reached the corridor that led to Bilbo's room.
"Well, I better let you go, thank you for a wonderful day" Bilbo said stepping away from Rin a little.
Rin gave a nod of his head before striding away, smiling a little as he felt the hobbits eyes on him as he left.
Bilbo kept his eyes peeled but didn't see any sign of Rin that night at dinner. He ate alone in the dining hall. The rest of the company were absent and not every dwarf was as happy as Rin to befriend a hobbit. He made his way back to his room, where he enjoyed a cup of tea before retiring to bed. As he lay in the soft comfortable bed feeling warm under the pile of furs, his mind wandering to Rin. He knew it was foolish to hope that he would see the dwarf again, but he couldn't help the fluttering in his stomach at the thought.
The next day was spent mostly in his rooms, sewing himself a new jacket. It was a beautiful deep brown, that reminded him of freshly dug earth. He only left to retrieve some food for himself from the kitchens. He gave Bombur a small wave, but the dwarf was so busy that they didn't get a chance to chat. It was now early evening and Bilbo was making his way toward the dining hall. He looked around eagerly for a familiar face as he entered but found no one he knew. He bit back his disappointment and a sigh that was longing to break through. He was nearly finished his meal when he felt a large body drop down in the seat beside him. He turned in surprise to find none other than Rin sitting beside him.
"Hello" Bilbo croaked, before clearing his throat and trying again.
"Hello Bilbo" Rin said gruffly. The dwarf looked angry, his body was tense, and he was glaring around the hall.
"Ah… is something the matter?" Bilbo asked tentatively, reaching out a hand to rest on Rin's arm.
The contact seemed to jolt Rin out of his bad mood. He turned with a soft smile to take in all of Bilbo.
"Not at all" Rin said. "Just not much of a fan of fish" he joked, pointing at the fish stew on his plate.
Bilbo chuckled. He knew that hadn't been what was bothering Rin, but he willingly let it go.
"Well, if you like you can come to my rooms for dinner tomorrow night? I promise not to cook anything fishy" Bilbo said, a slight flush on his cheeks at his own forwardness. But honestly, he was desperate for some company and Rin was the nicest dwarf he'd met in a long time.
Rin looked equal parts surprised and delighted at Bilbo's invitation.
"Ay, that sounds like a real treat, lad. I would be honoured."
Bilbo smiled happily and began to tell Rin all about his day as they ate their stew together. And if a certain dwarf's arm made its way back around Bilbo's waist, pulling him close, well neither felt the urge to comment on it.
