Honeymoon Mission

Prologue

It was a beautiful evening. The sun was setting over the Mermaid Sea, painting the sky in shades of red and violet. The water was calm; the only disturbance coming when a dolphin leaped out for a dive.

On an island simply known as Honeymoon Island, newlywed couples of all ages were enjoying themselves. Some were dancing to the soft music played by a string quartet in the dance hall. Others were in the dining hall eating that night's dinner; spaghetti and meatballs. A few couples were on the beach, some sharing heated kisses and very intimate caresses. Of course, many of the younger newlyweds had disappeared to the privacy of their cabins for certain activities.

But not everyone was interested in the romantic aspects of the island. Dwayne and Gina, both in their late twenties, were heading into the forest in the island's center.

Both Dwayne and Gina were tall with dark hair. Dwayne had stormy, gray eyes, and Gina's were ice blue. They enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and sailing. They both loved exploring, although Dwayne often jumped into things without thinking, often finding himself in trouble. Gina, on the other hand, was more level headed and observant. They were both guards at the castle of Friezenburg, which was how they met and fell in love. They had been married for a week now, and Queen Astrid had graciously given them a month's leave of their duties. Neither of them was the romantic type, often choosing more adventurous activities. Which was why, even though they had only been on the island one day, they were already bored with just about everything around them. So they had decided to go hiking in the forest.

As they walked, Dwayne, who was carrying a lantern, was complaining loudly. "Can you believe the couples next to us at dinner were noodle–kissing right there in public?" He shook his head in disgust. "And I'm pretty sure I heard moaning behind those big rocks near the dance hall. Someone couldn't make it to their cabin."

Gina just rolled her eyes. "That's just what people do on their honeymoon."

"Not us," he smirked. "We're mature."

She returned the smirk. "Oh, you're mature? So, tell me, why did you cry during our first time?"

"Uh… um…" Dwayne stuttered in embarrassment. "It was a one time thing, okay?"

She just snickered and took a few steps ahead of him. "Seriously, though… Have you noticed anything strange about this forest?"

"Yeah. It's dark."

Gina sighed. "And quiet. I haven't heard a single animal call since we came in here." She stopped walking and turned to face her husband. "The weird thing is... I saw some couples walk in here yesterday. None of those people came back out, at least not that I've seen."

"That does sound odd," he said, a grin spreading across his face. "Looks like we have a mystery on our hands."

"And you would love to solve it, wouldn't you?" she asked, laughing.

"Heck, yeah. It's the most interesting thing to happen since we got here."

Just then, the silence of the forest was broken by a queer sound. It sounded like music, but it was too high pitched.

Gina scowled. "What is that horrible noise? It sounds like…"

"…Like someone failing miserably at playing a flute," Dwayne finished. Suddenly, he noticed his wife's eyes glowing a curious gold color. "G–Gina, what…" His own eyes started to glow too, and the handle of the lantern slipped from his hand, the glass shattering and the flame going out instantly as the couple walked forward and disappeared into the darkness.

A/N: Not much to say about the prologue. I don't know when the next part will be up. I have a few things I need to finish up first.

Oh, and the Mermaid Sea is just me giving one of the Ever Realm's seventeen seas a name. LOL!
