Pairings: Mac /Stella
Summary: This is what I think should have happened at the end of the episode "My Name is Mac Taylor"
Mac - Office, Stella - County Hospital
Mac Taylor answers his phone in his usual way "Mac Taylor"
"Hey its me" Stella answered
"How's David doing?"
"He's at County, in surgery he's in critical condition Mac, I… I don't know if he's going to make it. You know this doesn't justify what he did but he really loved her"
Mac could hear the sadness in her voice
"Yeah, it makes you think, we should make the most of the moment we share with the people we care about"
"Absolutely" Stella wanted to say more "see you tomorrow"
"Umm…Stella?
"yes mac"
"Do you want to grab coffee or something?"
"Sure" she smiled down the phone ""Let me finish her up here, meet you are the lab?"
"Ok, see you there"
Ok so he had done it, he had finally asked Stella out for on a date, even if she wasn't aware, yet, that it was a date. They did get coffee together all the time just this time was going to be different. After the case they had just solved he had decided that tonight he should finally do something about the feelings he had been harbouring for his partner and best friend, feels that had only grown stronger with time.
BACK AT THE LAB
After checking on David one more time she headed back to the lab to meet Mac. As much as the thought of a coffee, or something stronger, with a good friend appealed to her right now being close to Mac was becoming harder. She had had strong feelings for Mac for years and it was getting harder to hide them from him. Sometimes she thought that maybe, just maybe, Mac had feelings for her to. Stella took a deep breath to clear her mind and headed to find Mac.
"Hey sorry I took so long, you ready?"
"Just shutting this thing down" Mac said turning of his computer, Mac was a little nervous, what is Stella didn't feel the same. "I'm guessing you haven't eaten yet?"
Mac knew her well "not yet, but what about the coffee?"
"We could grab something to eat, then get coffee, I know a nice little place" my place Mac thought to himself
"Sounds like a date" Stella beamed at him, hoping Mac would take the hint.
They walked to the elevator in silence, but Stella has so many things running through her head. She had said Date! She had said Date to Mac Taylor, a man who usually runs from the word. But he has smiled at her, hadn't he?
Stella had used the word Date and had smiled at him. Maybe this evening was going to be better than he ever thought. This evening was going to be the first of many, hopefully.
"So" Mac began "where shall we go? Mexican, Chinese, Greek?"
Stella was a little surprised that Mac wasn't backing out "I fancy Greek"
"me to" he said catching her eye, his heart racing like some love sick teenager.
Some Fancy New York Restaurant
"Wow Mac this place looks expensive" Stella said as they entered the restaurant "You really don't have to go to this much trouble"
"No trouble at all Stell, beside you're the one that said it was a date, and well, you deserve the best"
As they were shown to their table Mac was the perfect gentleman, he help her off with her coat, pulled the chair out for her and even ordered a drink for her. If this is what being on a date with Mac was like she could definably get used to it.
"You okay Mac? This is all very nice, but you seen a little distant"
"It's just…"
"You know you can tell me anything"
"I know that." Mac took a breath and looked her in the eye "What if I wanted this to be the first of many dates?"
Stellas reply was cut of by the waiter bringing there food.
Stella lifted her glass, looked at Mac "A toast"
Mac raised his glass
"A toast to the first of many" then she gave him that wonderful smile that warms his heart.
Dinner went by with relaxed conversation and comfortable silences. In all respects it was the perfect first date. As there meal finished and Mac paid the bill, much to Stellas protest and his winning argument of "I pay for everything when I take a lady out to dinner", Mac placed his hand in the small of Stella back and lead her to his car. "how about that coffee"
They drove by many cafes and bars that served coffee, yet Mac didn't stop. After a few miles Stella realised just where Mac was taking her.
"So this place we're going for coffee, would that me Café Mac?"
Mac smiled of course Stella had worked it out "best coffee in town"
MACS APARTMENT COMPLEX
After parking the car in his spot, he rushed round to open the door for Stella, he knew that she was an independent woman and that was part of the reason he loved her. She was also brave and incredibly clever and so beautiful both inside and out he was starting to wonder what she saw in him. Mac led them to his apartment. It felt nice bringing Stella to his home, it felt right somehow. Yes she had been there before but never like this never as part of a date.
"Take a seat, put some music on if you want, I'll just put the coffee on. Unless, you'd like a glass of wine instead"
"Wine sounds lovely" Stella smiled as she looked at Macs CD collection.
Mac returned with two glasses and a bottle of red wine. It was one she had suggested to Mac a few months ago, in fact she had bought him a bottle for his birthday. Mac saw the question on her face.
"Here you go" he said handing her the wine "This wonderful woman I know gave it to me, was just saving it for a special occasion"
Stella blushed and took the wine "thank you"
They took a seat next to each other on the sofa and they could both feel the tension in the room start to rise. They were thinking the same things "Were do we go from here?" They both went to say something at the same time which made them both chuckle.
"Did you find any music you wanted to listen to?" Mac asked trying to relieve some of the tension.
"There's a couple that look good, you choose"
Mac stood up grabbed a CD he felt appropriate and pressed play.
Soft melodies and gently rhythm poured into his living room. He turned to Stella gently took the glass from her hand and placed it on the table. He took her hand and gently tugged it so that she would stand. There was no need for words after ten years of friendship they could read each other's thoughts, well most of the time anyway. One dance led to another and before long the CD had finished. Feeling reluctant to let Stella go, Mac lead her back to the sofa to finish the wine. Stella yawned, not realising how much time had passed.
"I guess I had better go, I didn't realise how late it was getting"
"Ok, I can call you a taxi, you wanted"
Mac helped stella with her coat "I haven't had this much fun on a date in a long time, thank you."
"I'm glad you asked me out. I was beginning to think I might have to ask you." Stella leaned in and placed a soft kiss on his cheek, just like she had done many times before. But this time has Stella leaned Mac turned his had and captured her lips. It took them both a little by surprise.
"Stella I'm sorry…" mac began
Stella silenced him with a finger on his lips "Mac, you talk to much. After the wonderful time we've had this evening, I would be disappointed if it hadn't ended on a kiss. I'm just disappointed it didn't happen sooner."
She smiled at him, removing her finger from his lips and placed her hand flat against his chest right over his heart. "You're a wonderful, stubborn man Mac Taylor and I love every part of you so don't start second guessing yourself now, okay?"
Mac placed a hand on Stellas cheek, she always knew exactly what to say "You know me so well Stella, I love you" he searched her eyes, and finding nothing but love, kissed her with the promise of forever.
