OBLIVIOUS - Every Walk

Chin shook his head with a grin as he entered HQ ahead of Steve and Danny who were about to have a meeting with Catherine.

"Hey, I have the info and stats for the McCallister case," she held up a folder after saying hello. "What's funny?" The look on Danny's face as he snickered was definitely the result of bantering with her husband. Catherine knew it - and Steve's corresponding expression, too well for it to be anything else.

Danny snorted at his best friend's eye roll. "Please. It was priceless."

"Is that why you're cackling like a hyena?" Steve rolled his eyes. "Over nothing?"

"And on that note," Chin said, "Hi Cath, bye, Cath. I'm grabbing the suspect list and meeting Kono at Waiawa to interview McCallister's former gang members."

Undeterred, Danny pointed between Steve and Catherine. "Okay, since you insist, I'll tell you," he said as the three moved into the conference room.

Catherine sat at the table and waited, her look similar to one she gave her kids when they were about to tell her something as he continued with, "So, we were outside the sleezebag's motel after we took him down and of course, every …" he chuckled, "guest, and trust me I use that word loosely, was out in the parking lot when we started taking statements." He snickered again.

Steve gave his partner a look which Danny paid no mind to. "Your thousand yard stare isn't stopping my story." He waved a hand. "And there we have two ladies … again I use that loosely, who start slapping the crap out of each other. In a parking lot full of cops and SWAT." Danny shook his head. "I'll give you three guesses," he held up as many fingers "and the first two don't count, what they were fighting over." He full on laughed as Catherine grinned and rubbed Steve's bicep while pressing her lips together before her tongue peeked out with her smile. "Or who to be more specific."

"Oh boy." She raised her brows.

"Your boy, actually. Two tweakers that were getting arrested for helping their mutual boyfriend sell meth and heroin in a school zone and were carrying, were literally about to kill each other over your husband. Who had no clue."

Steve pinched the bridge of his nose. "I was trying to stop them from killing each other and compromising the scene. I wasn't taking notes on the dialog."

"And that is too bad." His partner grinned again. "It got pretty colorful."

Earlier that afternoon

The two women were clearly strung out and paranoid; unable to focus on details for long, they'd been outside their room smoking when the bust began. As Lou's team pulled them away from the doorway, Steve and Danny approached, weapons drawn while Chin and Kono circled the rear with the other half of the SWAT officers.

The scene was just cleared and HPD had begun to ask the motel's residents if they could offer any information when the women scrabbled at each other from where they sat, cuffed on the asphalt.

"Where'd he go?" The first one whipped her head side to side. "There he is," she said as she laid partially focused eyes on Steve. "I wanna talk to him."

"No way, I got the 411 on Mickey. Get outta my way, 'fore I get big mad and bitch slap you." The second retorted.

Both looked to be in their forties, but they were probably twenty five, Danny thought. Even with all his years as a cop it was sometimes hard to tell. He approached and held up a hand. "Ladies, we can take you down to booking the easy way if you cooperate. Then we'll talk about what you have on Mickey Yalani"

"No, no, I want to talk to him!" The woman who called herself Blaze said and jerked her arm violently from her companion's cuffed grasp while motioning towards Steve.

"Like hell. He looked at me special, he likes me. Back off, Dezi," the second woman whisper-hissed as she straightened the tank top that hadn't seen a laundromat in forever and smoothed her half grown out blond hair.

Pushing themselves into a standing position with the help of a young HPD officer as Steve approached, the screaming escalated until they fell at each other, cuffed hands flailing.

"Hey, hey, hey, cut it out." He pulled them apart as Lou took one woman's arm and Kono grabbed the other.

"Hey hottie, you got a kid?" Desi asked the task force commander as Kono tugged her further from Blaze. When he didn't answer and turned away she added, "Ya want one? I'm ready right now."

As they were led away, both women called out more offers to Steve, who'd already begun to discuss the two bodies found in an adjoining room with Chin and Danny. As they were put into separate cruisers, Blaze's voice carried across the parking lot as she turned her attention to her own survival. "I got shit on Mickey. I want a deal…"

"Deal? You were selling heroin and meth to kids," Grover shook his head, thinking they were probably younger than his daughter. "Get in the car."

Present

"His face…" Danny pointed. "Was priceless. He had zero clues they were fighting over him."

"I guess McGarrettitis hits all walks of life." Catherine pecked Steve's cheek.

"Lou is gonna bust my chops for a week. And probably yours when he sees you."

"Probably," she grinned. "But as the charter member of the McGarrett fan club I will defend you til the end. You may be oblivious..." She patted his cheek. "But you're mine."

Steve returned her grin and grabbed the folder of papers they needed to go over.

Danny made a good natured grousing noise, then added, "And I'll bust you till we're a hundred. Hey, I'm pretty sure if it's like father, like son, Cath, you'll have another chance to watch obliviousness."

"Not Angie?" Steve raised his brow, knowingly.

"Hell, no," Danny scoffed. "Women are never as clueless as us guys. If anyone's not gonna realize everyone thinks they're all that, it's my very handsome yet modest godson." He raised a finger. "Another ninety years of oblivious. Mark my words."

"Duly noted." Catherine smiled and tapped her tablet to turn it on. "And f DJ's lucky he'll have a best friend to bust his chops about it forever, too."

# End. Oblivious will return. Thanks for reading!
