Chapter 1

A thirteen-year-old, with black hair, brown eyes, woke up to the alarm clock going off. Quickly shutting it off, so it didn't wake his father. The teen begrudgingly got out of bed, and went to his thirteen-year-old sisters room. Opening the door, he sees his sister, sprawled out, and an arm laying over a little girl. The older boy walked quietly over to his sister, careful not to wake the little girl up, he bends down and quietly says, "Em', Emily, time to get up."

The older girl, Emily, tries to swat her brother away. Failing, she slowly opens her eyes and says to him, "Aaron, leave me be."

"Sorry, no can do." He pauses, then asks, "When did she come in here?" Aaron indicates to the small body next to Emily.

Emily lifts her head up, looks at her little sister and replies, "in the middle of the night. She had a bad dream."

Aaron gave a slight nod of the head, "any idea what it was about?"

"Nope," Emily tells him, getting up, trying to be careful to not wake up the little girl. "She wouldn't say."

"Okay. We got to get ready. Go ahead and wake her up, I want to get out of here before dad wakes up." Aaron tells her.

Emily gives a sigh, "okay, she's going to be a beast. She didn't get much sleep, and she's a grouch when she wakes up from lack of sleep."

"Sorry," Aaron apologizes. "Make sure she isn't too loud. Please."

Aaron then takes that moment to step out, giving one last look to his two sisters. Then he goes off and gets ready for school himself. Emily sighs, looks down at her little sister. She takes her free hand and runs it through the blonde locks. 'She's so innocent when she's sleeping. I will never understand the monster, who wants to hurt her. Heck hurt his own kids. One day, we will get out, and get away from him.' The teen thinks. She then proceeds to lean down to gently massage the little girls' back, whispering, "JJ, it's time to get up." The little girl, JJ, moves her head ever so slightly, takes her hand and rubs her face. "Come oh kiddo. We have to get ready for school."

"I don't wanna get up," JJ tells her sister, not moving, or indicating that she's going to move.

Emily rubs her sisters back, to help try to wake her. Forgetting about the spot on her back, JJ gives a hissing noise. "Oh gosh. I'm sorry. I forgot about the bruise on your back." Emily apologizes, "let me take a look at it." She then proceeds to lift JJ's shirt up to take a look at the bruise.

"No, Emmy," JJ tells her, pulling the back of her shirt down.

"JJ, I need to take a look at it," Emily tells the young girl.

JJ looks at her older sister, with tears in her eyes, she turns her back and lifts her shirt. Emily lifts her sister's shirt the rest of the way, and sees the bruise that had formed overnight. "It doesn't look too bad. Just be careful today, okay?"

"Okay," JJ promises, turning back to face her sister.

"Wipe those tears, and go get ready for school. Okay?" Emily tells her, gently wiping the tears off her sister's face.

JJ nodded her head, and slowly got up off the bed and went to her room to get ready for school. A little while later, Aaron meets Emily out in the hall, "are you about ready? Have you checked on JJ yet?"

Emily shook her head no, "no, I was just about to go check on her. I'm ready to go though."

"Okay. Hurry up, we don't want to be late," Aaron tells his sister before walking down the stairs.

Emily went and checked on her sister. Making sure that she was dressed, Emily had her go and brush her teeth. Watching her sister go into the bathroom, Emily headed downstairs to fix them both something for breakfast. Walking into the kitchen, Emily sees her brother standing by the toaster, and sees that he's got a couple pop-tarts ready. "I went ahead and heated these up for you and JJ. We don't have much, unfortunately." Aaron tells his sister, taking a bite of his own pop-tart.

"That's okay. Thank you though," Emily tells him. "JJ should be down any minute. She's brushing her teeth at the moment."

"All right. She'll have to eat hers on the go," Aaron mentions. Then he walks away to go grab his things for school.

Just as Emily was preparing both her and her sister's breakfast to take it to go, Emily turns around and sees her sister walking into the kitchen. "I have your breakfast right here, but we have to take it to go. We're going to be late. So why don't you go and get your shoes on."

"Okay," JJ tells her, turning around to go over by the front door to put her shoes on.

Grabbing both her and JJ's breakfast, Emily picked up her school bag, and walked to the living room. She turns to face her brother, who was on the couch waiting for his sisters. Emily sets her things down by the couch, and goes and gets her own shoes on. All three kids grab their own things and head to walk out. Aaron, being the last one to walk out the door, looks back one last time in the house. He looks around, makes sure they all have everything, and shuts and locks the front door. He turns around to face his sisters, "Well, lets go. Don't want to be late for school."

Halfway to the school, the youngest looks up at her siblings, and asks, "Is daddy going to be home, when we get home from school?"

Aaron stops, looks at his eight-year-old sister, "I'm not sure. I don't think he will be. If he happens to be home, we'll just go on up to our rooms, okay?"

The short blonde headed girl, looks at her brother and contemplates what he says. Not a second later she gives a sigh, "Okay."

Aaron grabs a hold of his little sister's hand, faces his other sister and gives a small sigh himself. All three kids continue their trek to school, and within fifteen minutes they make it to the grade school, Western Intermediate School. Aaron faces his two sisters and tells them, "I'll meet you two right here after school is let out."

"Okay, see you after school," Emily tells her older brother. She then takes a hold of her sister's hand and they both walk towards the building. JJ looks up at her sister while their walking, and she asks,

"Emmy?"

"Yes, JJ?" Emily responds.

"How's come we always have to arrive to school early? Why do we always have to walk to school?" JJ asks her older sister.

Emily stops in front of the doors, she takes her sister to the nearby bench and they both sit down. "Well, we just do. Aaron starts school earlier than us, so it's easier if we all go to school at the same time. That way, we don't have to see dad, and he can just sleep and not worry about taking us to school."

"Oh. Is it because daddy would be really mad?" JJ innocently asks.

Emily takes her time answering, then a few short seconds later she answers, "I think so. Aaron just wants to make sure we're safe is all."

"Okay," JJ responds. Then the little girl looks around and sees a few other kids walking into the school.

Emily follows her sister's gaze, and she goes to stand up, and motions for her sister to follow her. They both walk into the building, and Emily watches her sister go down one hallway for the third grade, while she goes off to the fifth grade hallway. The rest of the morning, Emily sits in her classroom, hoping the day wouldn't go by too fast.
