Prologue
The metal shackle around her ankle was heavy. It kept her trapped to the wall, as it was too heavy to allow her to move around freely. She could move, but only with a great bit of effort on her end. Her off-yellow gown was messy with dirt from the floor and blood from many incidents before. Long, messy raven locks cascaded down her back in tangled waves, dirt and blood matted in the inky tresses. Her bangs were long and blocked her eyes. They had broken the clip she used to use for her bangs. It wasn't easy, but she'd managed to hide for weeks before it was eventually found. She didn't know what they'd done to the woman who'd given it to her, but she knew that she hadn't seen her since.
Bluebell eyes opened slowly, and she brushed her messy bangs from her face as she let her gaze move to the wall beside her. Though it was hard, she carefully maneuvered herself onto her bruised palms and knees. The chain dragged noisily behind her as she pulled herself closer to a part of uneven stone in the wall. Once she had reached it, she pawed at the harsh texture until the stone was dislodged. As it moved, a pink, marble-sized jewel rolled out.
It clattered to the stone floor, the sound echoing out in the silence around it. It sounded like nothing more than marble landing on the floor. She pushed the stone back into its awkward-looking slot and picked the jewel up.
She held it in both hands, slowly moving them up to her chest as she squeezed tightly to the jewel.
This was why she was kept here, she was certain of it. That judgment was not for nothing, either.
Scars littered her body from all their attempts, but little did then know that, no matter how fervently they searched her, they'd never find the little bauble they were after.
She could remember the exact moment it finally showed up, but it seemed that none of them were even aware of it. It hadn't been cut from her body. Instead she had coughed it up almost at random. One moment she was choking on something despite having nothing to choke on, and the next she'd coughed up a blood-soaked jewel into her hands. Though fear claimed her, she refused to let them discover it was in her possession.
She'd discovered the loose stone in her cell-like room, and she decided to hide it there. It seemed to do the task well, considering it was still there and they seemed to still think that it was inside her.
She didn't know what the jewel was, but it gave her such ominous feelings wherever she saw it or touched it. Not only that, but she could see it even when it was hidden. She could see a pink glow from the stone, despite it not actually being there, and she could feel it when she was near it.
It was like her soul was screaming out for her to get rid of it, but she couldn't allow herself to do so. She didn't want to risk letting the people who sought it get their grubby hands on it.
It began to shine brighter, glimmers of it peeking out from her cupped hands, and she pulled it back some. As she looked down at it, a flurry of images flashed through her head. It created a blinding pain in her head, and she let out a pained sob as she dropped the jewel, this time bringing both hands up to cup her aching head.
Several faces flashed through her mind, each one digging another searing pain into her brain. At the end, one she remembered with beautiful clarity formed. A woman with dark brown hair cut into a short, stylish fashion and brown eyes.
In the memory, she paused what she was doing long enough to turn around and pat the top of her head. She closed her eyes when tears began to form, and she swore that she could feel the warm, soft touch atop her head.
The silence around her was torn to shreds without warning. Panicked screams and gunshots echoed through the halls of this place, and it yanked her from her thoughts forcefully. She snatched the jewel back up in a hurry and scooted back against the wall and away from the door out of instinct. Fear crept up her spine as she huddled into a small ball, hoping that whatever it was would overlook this room and keep going.
She could hear footsteps from where she hid, and she tried to silence her breathing as they got closer to her door. Her silence was torn to shreds when the door- which was often kept bolted and locked up- was abruptly torn off its hinges. A choked scream tore from her throat. The heavy, metal door was dropped and discarded to the side as if it was nothing more than a hunk of cardboard. When no other noise came, she slowly picked her head up.
Bluebell eyes landed on a tall figure standing in the doorway. She could remember seeing him several times, but the cold, empty look in his eyes always terrified her. This time those eyes of his looked so different as they landed on her. They were soft. There was no touch of cold programming inside them.
He was a mess, and he looked as if he'd just gone through some sort of hellish fight. He took a step towards her and she flinched back out of instinct. He kept walking until he reached where she was, and he knelt to be on her level, his gaze straying to the chain that kept her bound and trapped. Without a single trace of hesitation, he shot his left hand out and crushed the chain in his metal hand. It crumbled to the floor, leaving just the shackle around her ankle behind.
"You're coming with me."
Those were the first words she had ever heard him say. He looked back at her face, his hand that was made flesh and blood and bone reaching out to her. His thumb dragged along her cheek, brushing away a few of the tears that had fallen from her eyes.
She felt his eyes taking in the sight of her. She had many scars that were visible, and she felt as if he was counting the many faint marks that covered her visible arms and legs.
The fear in her eyes must have been evident to him, because he soon sat back, kneeling a few steps away from her. "Don't worry," he said. "I won't let anyone hurt you ever again. I promise."
She looked up at him when he said those words. His voice was surprisingly gentle as he spoke to her, and it was nothing like she ever expected it to be. Something about him also felt secure and safe. She didn't know why she felt that. She had always been able to tell people's intentions when they were near her, and she didn't feel any reason to be afraid of him as he stayed like this in front of her.
She moved a bit, finding it much easier now that the hefty chain was no longer an issue, and she crept closer to him by a few inches. He held a hand out, and she slowly let her smaller one rest in it. A small smile graced his face as he moved to stand up. The action pulled her up, as well, and he carefully steadied her on her feet. He was ready to catch her in case she was too weak to remain upright.
She was so fragile in appearance. Tiny and delicate, and looking as if the slightest upset could make her topple.
"W-What if…-"
At the sound of her voice, Bucky glanced down at her. He hadn't expected her to talk. He caught onto what she meant as she motioned to the hall outside the door. He was reminded of the bodies that now littered the area, and he looked back at her. "No one will stop us from leaving." He turned and knelt back down to be on her level. "We need to be quick. Come here, I'll carry you."
She met his gaze and slowly took a few steps towards him. She reached out, letting her hand fall to rest against his metal one. He looked from her face and to her hand before finally looking back at her face. He met her gaze, spotting the faint glimmers of trust starting to form within bluebell irises. A small smile appeared on his face for a moment as he came to a rapid conclusion at that very second.
He wouldn't allow any harm to find its way to her. He had remembered her, even as the weight of HYDRA's brainwashing started to snap, and it became his mission to come and rescue her from this base. Now that everyone else in the building and proximity was taken care of, it was safe to get her out of it.
He knew that… no matter what came next, he'd protect her until his dying breath.
He pulled her into his arms slowly, and he picked her up. She was as light as a feather as he let her put her arms around his shoulders. He rested a hand on the back of her head and hid her face in the crook of his neck as he left the room at last so she wouldn't see the crimson massacre he'd created.
"Soldier…" her muffled voice made him nearly freeze, and he refrained from shaking his head.
"Bucky," he said once she'd fallen silent. "My name is Bucky."
"Oh…" She mumbled as she sank her fingers into the rough material of his vest. "I'm Kagome," she responded softly. Another faint smile appeared on his face.
"That's a pretty name," he responded, and he felt her nod against him.
"Mm... my mommy gave it to me." Memories of that woman from before returned to the front of her mind, and a small smile appeared on her face as tearful eyes slowly fluttered closed. "I wonder if I'll ever see her again…" she murmured sleepily.
C.R: Not a oneshot, but I'd completely forgotten about this when things got crazy for me. I found it while going through my google docs and decided to revise it so I could post it.
Goes to say that Kagome won't have a pairing in this fic- just a bunch of protective uncles and aunts eventually. She's like 5 right now. Some background for this that won't spoil things down the road:
The quest for the jewel happened, and at the end of it, Kagome's life was reset, basically. The jewel returned to her body, and it became like it'd never happened. When she was 4, something happened to her family, and HYDRA kidnapped her from her home for the jewel.
This is right at the end of CA:TWS for reference.
Anyway, that's it for now. Thank you all for reading, and I hope you enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before I posted, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Reivew&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
