It had been a few weeks since New Year and Lexie had been working hard as normal, just because it was a new year doesn't mean everything was going to stay the same onboard the Enterprise or in this case fixed. Lexie was currently crammed into a Jeffries tube, fixing some circuitry which had fizzled out. "I only bloody replaced you the other day, how the hell have you broken already?!" She muttered angrily to herself as she grabbed a hand full of blue and red wires, it was then when she felt like someone was watching her. She glanced down the tube to see who it was, but what she saw almost gave her a heart attack. "It can't be…" Lexie thought, but suddenly she dropped the tool she was holding and it hit her right in the eye. A string of Gaelic swear words came flooding out of Lexie's mouth (which she had picked up from Scotty) as she clutched her face, that bloody hurt. "Dam it!" Slowly, Lexie shimmied her way out of the Jeffries tube and stood against the wall in the hallway. She removed her hand from her eye, but she couldn't see anything. "Just brilliant. That's all I need." "Lexie, you OK?" A voice called, Lexie turned to see Kirk standing at the end of the hall. "I'm alright Kirk." But her Captain didn't seem convinced, he quickly walked over to her and instantly noticed her eye.
"You're hurt." "It's nothing really." Lexie said sadly as she turned her head away, "It's not nothing Lex, let's get you to sick bay so Bones can have a look at it for you." Lexie wanted to argue but she couldn't really do that, Kirk was her Captain after all. "Fine, let's go." Kirk smiled as he led his young crew member away, "Kirk can you promise me something?" Lexie asked, Kirk nodded. "Sure Lexie, what is it?" "Please don't tell Scotty about this, he'll only freak out." Kirk didn't want to agree to that, Scotty had a right to know he was her Commanding Officer after all. But he knew she was right about him freaking out, he cared a lot about Lexie and he had a tendency to over react when she got hurt. "I won't tell Lex, but I can't guarantee that someone else won't." Lexie gave him a soft smile, "Thanks Kirk, I don't want to worry him. Scotty's got enough on his mind at the moment to be worrying about me." "The ship not behaving?" Joked Kirk, to which Lexie just nodded. "You hit the nail on the head, everything seems to be breaking at the same time. We're Engineers not octopus, we only have a single pair of hands each. So there's only so many things we can do at once." Kirk couldn't help but chuckle.
They soon arrived at sick bay, only to hear McCoy yelling angrily to someone from within. "Dam it Delta would you sit still! I'm a Doctor, not a bloody mechanic!" Slightly concerned about what was occurring, Kirk led Lexie in. They were greeted by the sight of McCoy sitting on a biobed, next to Delta who had a nail poking out from his arm. "What the hell happened to you?" Questioned Lexie, McCoy turned to face her and when to answer but stopped abruptly when he saw her eye. "My god! What the hell happened to you?" Lexie glared at him with her one functioning eye, "Is there an echo in here? I just asked that, Delta what did you do?" Her robotic companion turned to face her. "Got a nail jabbed in my arm, I can't move it." Lexie smiled as she walked over to him and sat beside him, she gently picked him up and placed him on her lap. "Now this won't hurt a bit." Delta was about to reply when Lexie quickly pulled the nail out, "There all done, it wasn't that hard now was it." Lexie stated as she placed Delta back onto the bed. "Thanks Lex, what happened to your eye?" "That's what I want to bloody know." McCoy stated as he picked up his Tricorder, before moving to sit next to Lexie.
"I just dropped one of my tools on my face, that's all." McCoy scanned his Tricorder over her eye and head, "No permanent damage, you'll be able to see out of it in a couple of hours but you'll be walking around with a black eye for several days. I'll go and get something to patch up that gash too." Lexie looked at the Doctor in confusion. "Gash? What gash?" "Umm, the one just above your eye." Kirk replied, still confused Lexie placed her hand over her eyebrow, she could feel something wet and warm under her fingers and it stung, how had she not felt blood on her face? Maybe it was because she was so focused on her throbbing eye to notice. "Oh that gash, didn't even realize I'd cut my head." McCoy simply rolled his eyes as he walked away, Lexie then turned back to face Kirk when she thought she saw the same person as before standing behind him. This was becoming a regular occurrence since new year, it was one that Lexie wanted to stop. She blinked her one working eye several times, which caught the attention of Delta. "You alright Lexie?" "Yeah I'm fine Delta." Kirk then walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder, "Think you should lie down Lex, you look very pale." Lexie just complied, she didn't want to argue.
McCoy returned a few moments later, only to find the Engineer laying down. He simply rolled his eyes once more before turning to face Kirk, "Off you go Jim, I don't need you watching over me." McCoy said. "Oh come on Bones, don't you like having an audience?" Joked Kirk with a huge smile on his face, that was until he saw McCoy slowly raising a hypo up. "I'll give you a choice Jim. Leave or I'll make ya leave." The Captain gave a nervous chuckle before he slowly backed out of sick bay along with Delta who told Lexie he'll be in her quarters, "Bloody gigantic child." McCoy muttered as he turned his attention back to Lexie, who was still laying down. "You alright?" "Fine, Kirk wanted me to lay down since I looked pale. But I'm fine." Lexie replied as she slowly sat up to allow McCoy to sort out the gash on her face, but as he worked away she once again saw the same person standing behind the Doctor. Had she hit her head that hard that she was hallucinating? No it couldn't be that, since she first saw the person before she dropped her tool on her face.
Lexie was so focused on her strange vision that she had completely forgotten the fact that McCoy was sorting her head out, that was until he announced he was finished. "Thanks McCoy." "You're welcome kid, just please be more careful." McCoy was expecting her to bolt out of the room, but she didn't move which concerned him. But before he could speak Lexie asked him an odd question, "Would you mind giving me a complete head scan McCoy." "Why would I need to do that?" McCoy thought to himself. He simply agreed to the Lieutenants strange request and began his scan, but nothing came up as strange or odd. "Everything's fine Lexie, nothing's wrong." Lexie sighed quietly, "Should have guessed, thanks anyway McCoy." "Why did you want me to do that anyway?" Once again Lexie sighed. "I've just been hallucinating a bit, maybe it's down to lack of sleep and stress." McCoy nodded, "Most likely, take it easy and you have the rest of the day off anyway, we can't have you working with only one working eye now can we?" Lexie didn't argue, she simply thanked the Doctor again and left sick bay that was after she was handed an eye patch.
Lexie was trying to figure out why she was seeing this person, if there was nothing wrong with her head physically then maybe it was mental. But she was finding it hard to think about an answer since she was getting stared at by other officers, it was clearly to do with her eye since McCoy had handed her an eye patch to wear for a little while. She didn't mind them staring since she was use to it anyway, everyone looked at her oddly because of her eyes being two different colours, so this was no different. As she turned down the hall where her quarters were located, Lexie walked straight into someone. She was almost knocked off her feet, but was held up by someone grabbing her arm. "Are you alright Lieutenant?" A calm voice asked, Lexie nodded when she saw who she had walked into, "I'm fine Mr Spock, I'm sorry for walking into you. My vision isn't the best at the moment." Lexie stated as she readjusted her eye patch. "May I enquire as to the reason for the eye patch Lieutenant." "Dropped one of my tools on it, but I'm fine. I was just heading off to my quarters." Spock raised an eyebrow, but quickly lowered it.
"Very well, I wish you a speedy recovery." The Vulcan said, Lexie smiled at him despite knowing the First Officer wouldn't smile back. "Thank you Sir." The two of them then went their separate ways, Lexie was really looking forward to just having a nice nap, to hopefully take her mind off everything. When she entered into her quarters she was immediately jumped on by Delta, who seemed to have been waiting in front of the door for his creator the whole time. "Hi Lexie! I'm glad to see that you're OK, nice eye patch by the way." Lexie couldn't help but smile at her metallic friend, "Hello Delta, I'm fine. Have you been hovering at the door long?" "Since I came in, I was just worried about you." Lexie's smile only grew as she walked over to her bed, Delta tightly in hand. "Well I appreciate that bud, I really do. Now, I'm gonna try and get some sleep. I've got a banging headache, but I suppose that's what I get for dropping a dam wrench on my face." Delta chuckled quietly as Lexie placed him down on her desk, "Yeah you're meant to hold tools, not drop them." "I'll keep that in mind for next time Delta." Lexie replied as she gave him a 'boop' on the nose, before laying down on her bed and closed her one working eye.
Only an hour went by until Lexie was pulled from her slumber, since her door had buzzed. "Who is it?" She called sleepily, "Me lass, can I come in?" A friendly voice call, Lexie slowly rose up from her bed. "Dam it's Scotty, oh he's going to freak." Lexie thought to herself before calling her Commanding Officer in, "There you are Lex, I was getting worried when you didn't report… Bloody hell! What happened?!" Scotty cried. Lexie gave him a soft smile, "I dropped a wrench on my eye, don't worry though I'm alright." "Why didn't you call to say that you'd hurt yaself?!" Lexie stood up and walked over to him. "Because I knew you would reacted like this, you always freak when I get even the slightest bit hurt. Besides, us Engineers have enough to be dealing with at the moment." Scotty knew she was right, but he couldn't help it. He just cared about her, maybe a little too much.
Almost like a dad, which reminded the Scotsman that he still hadn't spoken to Lexie about the 'dad' thing. He was debating talking to her about it while he had her attention, but he simply couldn't bring himself to do it. "I don't mean to freak out, I only do it because I care. Anyway I'll leave you to rest up, but before you return to work I want McCoy to give you the all clear." Lexie smiled before hugging him gently, "Don't worry Scotty I will." Scotty felt his cheeks blush, this happened every time Lexie hugged him ever since she had called him dad. The Scotsman returned the hug before leaving the room, cursing in his head to himself. "You should have told her about it, you stupid man." But Scotty knew one person who would be more annoyed then himself, that person being McCoy. The Doctor knew about this and had been slowly losing his patients with Scotty, he even threated to tell the Lieutenant himself, which Scotty didn't want to happen. He was just trying to find the right moment, which was proving to be just as difficult than keeping the Enterprise together.
