Chapter 1: An (un)ordinary day - part 1 of 3

Luz Noceda idly tapped her fingers against the table; the noise helping to distract her in-between glances at the window and waiter who makes her second Pineapple-Mango Smoothie.

The whole sky was blue and partly cloudy cloudless. A strange image coming out of a cloud in the sky.

Pulling her eyes away from the window, she looked around the shop, finding it just as empty as it had been for the last fifteen minutes. Wensdays tended to be slow days at Arcadia Hill. Besides Luz, the only other customers were a pair of teenage boys playing a game of pokemon cards at one table and a woman who had been tapping on her phone ever since she'd walked in.

She enjoyed coming here when it was like this. This place was always warm, calm and has comfortable atmosphere.

The workers would tolerate practically everything that customers does. So, Luz hasn't been banned after a couple "incidents" here.

The fact that they made great smoothie and muffins was a nice bonus.

But today neither smoothie or muffin can't make her feel better.

The young Latina glanced at the pamphlet that her mom give her last morning.

Reality Check Summer Camp. A place she will spend this summer. And the place would attempted to squash her weirdness.

Luz have always been a girl with a wild imagination and a love of fantasy novels, especially the tales of The Good Witch Azura. Unfortunately, her book report of Good Witch Azura... got out of hand.

Her teacher and class did not react kindly to snakes. And after talking to school principal, her mom decided Luz spending the summer at the Reality Check "reform camp".

The teen had no doubt that will be an awful summer.

She can't believe that she would enjoy being put into boxes. Even though the boy on the cover was smiling, the position he was in did not look comfortable at all. A wonderful metaphor what this camp will do with her.

"Maybe it's a good thing that I didn't get to the Act 3." Luz thought as she held a large firecracker with some smaller ones tied to it. "After that I probably would staring at the brouche for Military School now."

"We do not allow fireworks and firecracker in here. I'm sorry." said a young waiter with blue highlights and British accent as he put smoothie on the table.

"I was just leaving." She said as she returned the firecracker to her book bag. Then she paid and left.

The teen girl turned the corner, and walking a familiar pat right after she left Arcadia Hill Cafe.

Today is her last day of freedom before she have to go to camp. And if she have to spend next months listening about balancing checkbooks. She's going to spend this day in the Burrow.

The Burrow, a childhood nickname that was given to unfinished mall on the outskirts of town by the most of the people in city.

The construction was halted for unknown reasons. Some said that this place is haunted and weird thing happens at night. But, like, nobody believes that.

Few years ago, the Burrow became very popular place for graffiti artists. External and interal walls of building was covered with countless graffiti.

Luz was very fond of visiting this place. It was kind of like her own little refuge away from the world, someplace she could come to and be alone with her thoughts for a while, especially on bad days like today.

The graffiti are beautiful and they always made her feel better.

Her favorite graffiti were painted by "Owlet". Nobody know who is hiding behind this pseudonym. But everybody loved Owlet's graffiti.

Luz fell a bit better when arrived to her destination and noticed a new graffiti with this distinctive sign.

Soon as she got close the wall, a few sun's rays lit the one big wall outside. Beautiful, vibrant colors covered the once bland and boring grey concrete walls of the building, a treat for the eyes.

Graffiti depicts a padlock with various symbols including two fleurs-de-lis, a crossed keys, a small lock, and the four alchemical symbols for Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. In the center of the padlock is a white star shape-keyhole image.

To the left of the padlock sits man wearing the blacksmith clothes, holding the hammer in Thor style in his right hand and the large iron key in his left. Beside him shows the shadows scary creatures being burned in flames.

To the right of the padlock sits woman with pointed ears, wearing a lightly armored robe. She holds the witch staff with green crystal snake on top in her right hand while holding a weird key in her left. The bow of key shows demonic like eye. Beside her shows the dragon holding a orb of light.

The top shows a sun and moon surrounded by clouds. A the bottom, below the padlock is the Latin text: "OMNI CLAVSTRO CVIQVE EST CLAVIS" ("Every Lock Has A Key"). Below that is the demonic skull with a thirteen eyes.

Luz handed her a phone to make photo.

Suddenly, there was a loud crack. She glanced over her shoulder, then froze when she saw it.

If Luz had had to name it, a girl supposed she would have called it dog, though there was something reptilian about it, too. It was as big as horse. It had sharp purple eyes. Its fur was a onyx-black color. There were two gray bands on each of its back ankles, as well as a spike on the top of both schoulders. It also had a long, skinny scaly tail with a triangular tip that was split down the middle and four clawed toes on each paw.

It stood across the square menacingly, its black body practically suck the life and light from around its body. It didn't move or growl; it didn't even look like it was breathing. It was one of these creature. This which aura screaming "Born to kill". But It seems…so calm.

An abnormal chill runs through the girl, reaching down into her bones. Would it attack? Or was it just standing there? Maybe it didn't see her yet.

The teen was far enough away so that Luz might be able to have a head start. She swallowed, and took a single step back.

Bad choice.

Her feet hit the empty spray can. It roll around on the ground with the distinct spray paint clacking.

A sudden clanging sound made large dog whip its head around and look at Luz, its had a look of quiet murderous look on its face.

The next second, Luz turned and bolted in the opposite direction down the alley.

She hoped the monster dog would hesitate for chasing her or not. She cursed internally in Spanish as she heard heavy footsteps sprinting after her. The chase was on, and she had no intention of being caught. Her heart pounded heavily as she rounded the corner onto the street at full speed, making a beeline for the for the park.

The weird canine growled after her, also running as fast as possible.

A silent thank you to her school gym teacher for making her class participate climbing and jumping was said as she leapt onto the stone wall on the edge of the park, and dropped down on the other side. She glanced both ways before deciding to dive into a nearby bush, just seconds later a loud thud suggested the monster dog had made it over the wall too.

Her white and purple hoodie, short jean-shorts, black legging and black cap don't helped much her blend into the green leaves, yet she just freezing completely still as she listened for the large dog.

Breathing was all she heard, she had managed to shake them for the moment, but she couldn't stay in this bush forever and she used the time to look for the nearest exit and evaluate the distance to it.

Unfortunately for her, the creature's much more faster than her.

Luz only made it just past the few trees when the canine grabbed her hood in its mouth and slammed her on to the hard ground.

The girl gasped at the sudden impact, the breath knocked out of her. Next thing she knew, she was being catapulted to the tree a few yards away.

When she hits the tree behind her, she looks up to see monster dog looking at her.

Luz shrieked in horror.

The canine roared wildly and then open its quadra-hinged muzzle like a Yautja from Predator, heading straight at her. Ready to tear her body to pieces

And just the monster dog could finish Luz off, a powerful reddish orange blast shot and blinded its eyes. It yellped in pain as turned and ran through the nearest park gates.

Luz turned to see teen boy a few years older than her, holding a staff in right hand. It was wooden and had a owlcat tottem at the top.

As he got close, the girl get a good look at him. With pale skin and bright orange hair, he's a proud carrot top. For his eyes, he had segmental heterochromia in both of them. Parts of his eyes were gray and the other being yellow. But his most notable features were a pointy ears and a ruby long hexagon-shaped jewel embedded into his sternum.

His outfit consists of an black t-shirt with a gray collar underneath a red, orange, and dark brown sleeveless jacket, with the collar of his jacket raised. He wore normal tan jeans which were held by a brown belt. He also had wrist band and black and navy boots.

"Are you okay?" He asked, and extending his hand to her.

"I'm fine. Still screaming inside. But I'm alive." Luz said as she took the hand and let him pull her up. "What was that?"

"I could tell you but you probably would have believed me." He hummed to himself as he pressed his finger against his lips and studied her. "Let's say seeing that thing was a figment of your imagination caused by heavy metals in your blood. Actually, I'm not here too."

"You're here."

"Are you sure?" He asked in weird voice, and he leaned in toward her. "Maybe you're talking-Ow!" He stood up as Luz poke him in the eye.

"You are true person."

"All right, point taken." And there's a bit of dry amusement in his voice.

"So this monster dog was real too." Luz wasn't sure if she feel relieved or not when she said that.

"It wasn't."

"It was."

"It wasn't."

"It was."

"We can't keep it up. I got hellish zombie-dog to catch. See ya never!"

"Wait!"

"Sorry girl, this lock-in part." He spun his staff and slammed the end on the ground.

The earth began to quake, and a big cluster of crystal grew out of the ground, blocking her way.

"Wow... Did not expect that..." Luz commented in shock as she touched the wall with her finger, it was real not some trick.

She was staring at crystal wall with this really intense look on her face, it was nearly transparent, so she could saw the strange teen ran towards the abandoned mall.

Her first thought was to call the police or animal control service. But her fingers frozen just above the screen. What she's going to say? Hellhound attacked me, and strange teen boy with a wooden staff shooting lasers trying catch it.

If she do that, her mom'll send her to near a lunatic asylum instead of summer camp.

A sudden flash of light from a building's windows called her attention.

Before the light faded out, Luz disappear behind the same wall she had just climbed a five minutes ago.

She quickly sprinted and snuck into the building. She ran up on an escalator, where there appeared to be signs of a fighting on that floor.

Luz stopped when she heard growling.

The girl then looked over at the ledge and saw the monster canine and a mystery teen.

The demonic dog growled in anger as it charged right at the orang haired boy, who quickly dodged and moved to his left. He used his staff to fired another blast at its head again. It roared in anger. It turned and gave chase after him. He smirked, quickly dashed and ran away from wild canine. He came across to the walls, where he used his full speed in running up on it. Allowing the monster rammed on the walls, he hovered over and landed on its back.

"Yipee-kiyay!" He exclaimed as the animal shook the boy on its back through and through.

He held onto that canine, still a big smile on his lips and confidence glowing around him. It was like this boy was born to do this, like he put all his energy in it. And it looked like it wasn't his first rodeo.

"Look, ma, no hands!"

He had been close to sixteen seconds on that dog-like creature when it grunted in anger. Using its tail, grabbed boy by the throat and threw him in the decorative pillar.

He flipped a bit, missed pillar and flew a few feets away, then landed on his feet. The canine didn't waste any time. It reared up on its back legs, before charging at the male teen.

But the boy just smiled, taking something out of his pocket.

A metal disk like objects with a glass-like center, and a rune etched into a gold seal on the side emerged. Small enough to fit right in his hand.

"Time to back home, doggie." He shouted as threw it under a monster dog, then twirled his staff around a bit planted the end to the floor.

*FWOOOOOOM*

The blinding flash of light filled the place. Luz had look away and shield her eyes. When the light had faded, she looked back to where monster dog stood.

But it was gone. A lorge kind of vortex were in its place.

The orange haired boy walked to it with a winning smile before he looked around. "It's a bit of a maze down there...Meh. If somone's going to lean this up, it's not going to be me."

Then he dove headfirst into the vortex. It splashed energy about as if it were water. Silence sliced across the place. The monster and strange teen gone.

But this...vortex was still here.

A average person would have turned around and walk away. Luz, however, was not that kind of person. She came gently and slowly to weird vortex and crouched down, so she could see inside.

It was marvellous, a feast for the eyes, this complication of coloured tints, a perfect kaleidoscope of green, yellow, orange, violet, indigo, and blue; in one word, the whole palette of an enthusiastic colourist.

Then Luz noticed the wonderful vortex shrank with each passing seconds, straining glowing edges closer. A small, very small, part of her thought she should just leave. Averting weird thing wasn't really her style, though, so with fast beating heart, she raised hand and touched the colorful surfec of glowing vortex.

She felt a chill... like a warm water running up her spine... and then a glowing tentacle just sprung full-grown from the vortex and dragged her into it.

She plummeted downwards through some sort of iridescent, swirling mass of energy, faster and faster. There didn't seem to be any upward limit to her speed. Her skin itched, and her perception seemed to stretch.

Her consciousness fled.

The last thing Luz saw before she passed out was...

Well whatever it was she was awake now. Although her head was still throbbing like crazy. She's going to lie here, wherever 'here' is, for the rest of her life. Or at least until her vision cleared.

She brought her hand up in order to soothe her aching head.

Once her vision cleared...she sit up and found herself in a tiny sheltered meadow, ringed with silent trees and illuminated by a shaft of sunlight. The forest around it has a highly dark and gloomy atmosphere, with little light being visible from the inside.

Slowly her memories came back to him, between slowly disappearing pain in her head and the feeling of the grass underneath her she remembered what happend to her again.

A monster dog, strange teen with wooden staff, and a weird glowing vortex.

It was only now that Luz started to notice the weird plants, in between the trees, that looked like they had eyeballs-like flowers growing on them.

She stepped closer to one.

On closer inspection the 'flowers' proved to not be funny flowers or rolled up leaves with a single slit through the middle, acting as the pupil. But the real eyeballs. One even winked to her.

She reached out a finger to poke one of the eyeballs.

"If I were you, I wouldn't do it."

A voice. Unfamiliar, female, and only a few feet away from her. Luz shrieked, and lost her still precarious balance. She toppled backwards and her head slammed into ground with a burst of pain and a bright flash followed by stars.

Luz groaned, blinking away tears. Someone loomed over her, a dark shadow blocking her view of sky.

"That's going to leave a bump."

Adrenaline coursed through her veins. Her fingers coiled around a solid length of wood, and Luz sprung to her feet, fighting off the wave of nausea that accompanied the sudden movement, and brandished her weapon in front of her. "Stay back!"

"What did I ever do to deserve being threatened by a Treants' arm?"

Luz blinked. "I… what?" She glanced at the teenage girl in front of her, who seemed entirely too amused with something, then back to her wepon. Rather than the heft of large stick, a live green-brown skelonton arm wriggled in her grasp.

"Gaaah!" Luz exclaimed with dignity, and flung the arm onto the floor, where it flopped. And then just freezes, looking like a normal stick in the shape of a arm.

Deep breaths. She needed to get ahold of herself. She turned her attention back to the stranger and finally got a good look at her.

The pale skinned teenage girl, older than her. A small nose, a pointy chin, thin red lips, upturned crystal blue eyes, and fire red hair which she keeps in a side braid. Her ears are pointed like elf. A violet gemstone is embedded in her chest, which takes the form of a water droplet. She wore a cyan asymmetric dress and is accented with light green, light gray-blue pants, and black and white knee-high boots. In addition to that, she wore black fingerless gloves. She also had a gold earring on her right ear.

"Is everything all right?" the red head asked, "You looked like you were two steps from panic attack."

"A panic attack? There is nothing to panic about." Luz didn't know if she wanted to convince herself of that or this girl. "Can we start again? I'm Luz."

After a brief small pause, the older girl returned the smile and shook her hand. "Katrina. Nice to meet you."

"This may sound strange... but where are we?"

"The Everdark Forest. A very dangerous place for human." She added when noticed Luz's ears.

"You speak as if you aren't human." Luz said with a raised brow.

"Do I look like the human girl to you?" Katrina asked, moving her pointy ears, and with the middle finger tapping gem in her chest. Luz kept staring at her, but no answer.

"It's a little hard to tell, isn't it? Let me give you a tip," The older girl said, making an orb of fire in one hand and an orb of water in the other. "Can human do it?"

"Is this one of those hidden-camera shows?" Luz looked around like she thought it was some elaborate joke.

"Hidden-camera?" The both orbs vanished.

The Latina opened her mouth to repiled at the precise moment the teen who save Luz popped his head back out of the brush next to them.

"Hey, Red, I've got good news and bett-why are you looking at me like that?"

"You're bleeding, Jett." Katrina said after he came out of the bushes

"I am?" Jett put a finger to his forehead and got it covered in blood. "Sweet. A cool scar on head."

"That's no reason to be happy of it." Luz noticed.

"Chicks like men with scars."

"Then I'm doing "Chicks" a huge favor." Katrina draw a spell circle around teen's head and made wound glow. A little weird glowing energy here and his forehead was good as new.

"I would look good with scar. But thanks, Kat, anyway." This time, Jett's eyes stoped on Luz, looking as if he had just barely noticed her for the first time. "And by the way, how did you get here, girl?"

"I followed you." Luz said honestly.

"You opened a gap in place where were the humans." Katrina declared as she pointed at the boy so accusingly that it threatened to bore a hole into Jett's chest. "And you didn't check before you come back?"

"Guilty." He said, but he doesn't look like he feels the slightest bit guilty.

She sighed, "Tell me at least the monster is back in here."

"Don't worry, I took care of it." He shot back a smirk.

"I still can't believe you get that cursed rock."

"First, it's not a rock. It's night crystal. And how was I supposed to know there was a shadow monster hiding in it?"

"You bought a magic shining rock off a gremlin named Cozbi "the Twilight Monster Sorcerer." She bent her fingers, quoting the Twilight Monster Sorcerer part. "What did you think would happen, Birdbrain?"

Before he could even think of a reply to that a loud howl emanating from deeper in the woods. And a few seconds later, large glowing eyes showed up between the trees.

Both Jett and Katrina gave surprised looks at each others, before they both scowled at glowing eyes of creature.

"Jett."

"Yes?" He asked casually, but get a stronger grip on the staff.

"You said the Ectonuritol come out of your crystal." The red head said as she put her fists together and summon her own staff. It was bisque shade of brown staff with the elegant phoenix on top.

"This just happened, Kat."

"This isn't the Ectonuritol." said Katrina in a regal tone as creature has stepped out of the shadows. Luz recognized immediately a gigant canine who tried to kill her.

Jett turned to her, looking somewhere between put off and ashamed as he grumbled, "Look it's not my fault that kind of creatures look alike."

"How many four-legged shadow-zombie canine come out of crystal?" Luz asked, a half intrigued and half frightened.

"As a matter of fact, 11. Twelve, if you consider black dog ghoust." Katrina repiled, pointing her staff at creature, "But this one is the Gytrash."

Jett's brow furrowed, "So when I used a ice spell on it, I...Whoops."

"Whoops?! That's all you got?! WHOOPS?!" Katrina yelled when understand what he'd done.

"There's other things I wanna say, but none of them are very lady-like."

Then, to everyone's surprise-turned-horror, canine began transforming into a other being, its body had been changed to something different. A multiple ice spikes grew across its body, and had a mane, tail, and underbelly that are all swirling mass of black shadows. It also had four huge gray spikes running down its back that overlap. These spikes start out as a shark-like fin at the head and rises almost into an arc over the back, tapering near the rump. Claws and teeth just looked quite so... lethally sharp.

"Have you got a plan?" Luz asked, looking at creature. That stood within just three meters from them. It's way bigger than it was before.

"It's angry, unstable and absorbed much shadows like a king-sized sponge." Katrina answered a bit tensely as her gaze moved towards the creature, "We have no crystal to seal Gytrash , so I suggest a tactical retreat."

"Are we going righ, left or up?" Jett asked, the owlcat on top his staff just seems to move.

"Up."

"Wait, what are you planning to-" Luz didn't get to finish her question.

Katrina locked her arm around Luz's and jumped into the air, Jett followed her example. Their staffs glowed and the ornate animals atop the staffs moved its wings and began flapping, they began flying away with Luz in Katrina's tow.

Gytrash growling at sky before ran off.

In the distance the trio was now flying, Jett and Katrina stays calm and relaxed while Luz was closing her eyes as tight as she could letting a few tears fly out.

This must be a dream, she must be in bed dreaming after eating too much flamin hot nachos!

The Latina pinched her skin, only to finds that it hurt. And confirm this whole situation isn't just weird dream... or hallucinations induced by the graffiti paint fumes.

About two maybe three minutes later, Luz feel ground under her feet. But it wasn't normal solid ground. She the ground was soft and resilient. Like she's standing on a water bed.

"We landed, you can open your eyes now." Katrina spoke up making Luz do so and then she stood there slack-jawed, buggy-eyed.

They're standing on a cloud somewhere, really high.

"How." Luz finally whispered.

"Magic."

"Magic?" the Latina asked, still feeling odd about this whole thing.

"Yeah, magic." Katrina nodded, pointing to view in front of them, "In there, magic is normal."

Luz was now gazing upon the gigantic corpse of the horned creature partly lying in the ocean. This skeleton seemed to made up a large portion of the land here. She need a ten seconds to understand that made up the actual isle. She looked down in shock, having to physically pinch herself again.

'Ouch.'

She was definitely awake.

"What's this place?"

"I will answer your question." Jett said, stepping up beside her. He gestured grandly around them. "This, my dear human, is the Boiling Isles."

Luz blinked. "The Boiling Isles?"

"A slimy, stinky, weird and gross...the Realm of Magic. Every Myth you humans have is caused by a part of our world leaking into yours."

As if on cue, dragon popped out of a nearby cloud with a soft "Roar!" before start to fly towards the rib bones of the titan

"Is that a dragon?"

"Eeyup." Jett nodded, "We have dragons, griffins, flying monkeys, werewolves, mermaids, etcetera."

Luz didn't know what to say, didn't know yet how to respond to a confession like that. Of course she had hoped, somewhere deep down that the magic world like this in her favorites novel are real, she had always believe magic is a thing, but hearing confirmed from somone who belong to magic realm and seeing it so directly made it somehow more tangible. More real.

Then something just snapped in her brain.

"OhgodOhgodOhgodOhgod!" Luz screamed, bouncing like a little child. "THIS IS AWESOME!"

The olders teenagers were a bit startled by her excitement, they had expected at least some fear.

"Not the reaction I was expecting." Jett said with a small smile.

The Latina looked back at them with an inquisitive look on her face, "What are you an elf, wizard, a genie?"

"I'm the witch. Jett Clawthorne, at your service." He grinned, going as far as giving Luz a theatre bow, "This is my cousin also a witch. And we-"

"Must catch Gytrashes ." Katrina immediately interjected, taking on an boss tone.

"It's a lot of work." Jett complained.

"We can't let it run free."

"Why not? This is the Boiling Isles, more than 80 percent of the creatures here are as dangerous as Gytrash. Or more dangerous. What's the harm in let it run free?"

"It can smell us. You don't want him to be able to come after you."

Jett scoffed. "So what? If the Demon Hunters, the Shadow Clan, and that vampire ladies from the pet café place can't track me down, how is a overgrown shadow puppy supposed to find me?"

"The vampire ladies were surprisingly persistent," said Katrina "What did they even have against you?"

"They was under the mistaken impression that I had stole one of their cafe pet. I can't imagine why."

"Then you have to stop take King to place like this."

"Maybe you are right, but still see no reason to worry about Gytrashes."

"It also can found the crack."

"Ooookay we have to seal it."

"Uhhhh, guys?" Luz raised her hand like a student at lessons. "What about me?"

When the adrenaline died down a bit, she realized she is 777 feet in the air in the middle of the other dimension. Her companions are intending to hunt for shadow hellhound. And she don't know what her role is in their plan or how she can back to home. What made her much more worried, now.

The pair blinked. It was Katrina that answered. "Gytrash knows your scent. If it found a new crack, hunt you. Gytrashes can be as fierce as any dragon. But on the other hand...The Boiling Isles isn't exactly always 'friendly'. Especially to outworlders. You shoud back to your world."

"Can you send me back?" Luz asked Jett, "Like you send that monster dog here."

"The Hollow running one way." The red head repiled before he could.

"We need a real portal. Lucky for us, I know someone who might help." Jett said, pointing out a random point in space, "Next stop, the Owl House!"

Katrina didn't know what was more crazy. Her cousin crazy fly tricks, or Luz request to make more of them while she fly with him.

Jett playfully rode his staff as if he was in a roller coaster. The owlcat on top his staff cooing happily as flew in loop-de-loops in order to entertain its owner and extra passenger. Although it was making human teen dizzy. Luz screamed in glee.

"Jett, stop." Katrina pleaded as she stopped her eyes from spinning, "You two are making me lose my breakfast. Since yesterday."

"Joykiller." The boy complain, flying next to her.

"I just don't want to any of us threw up." His cousin repiled, "Besides, we're here." She added as they flew down into the large cliff to make their landing. Just before they landed, Luz noticed there was a single building on the cliff.

"I know you have no choice whatsoever. But thanks again for choosing Air Howlitty." Jett said getting off the staff and Luz followed his example.

She looked to see strange yet mystical looking large house made from white brick with a sloping blue roof, a stained glass window above the wooden door gives the impression of a large demon eye and most of the house consists of a crumbling stone tower with moss growing on it.

They walked up to the door and saw what looked like an owl face.

"Word of advice, don't buy anything from my mom." Jett said to Luz.

"And don't be alarmed if Hooty touches you." Katrina added, "He is sort of quirky."

"Who is-"

"HELLO!" A wooden barn owl face on the door extend itself out the door and stared at Luz. The shock of it almost knocked her to the ground.

"This is Hooty." Jett briefly explained, "Our house demon and the best Security System on the Boiling Isles."

"It's me! Wanna by my friend?" The house demon said, pressing itself into girl's face.

"Hooty, we had a talk about personal space." the male teen gently chided Hooty, who seemed to have made a home around Luz's shoulders.

"I love other people's space." Hooty chirped mischievously.

Jett give Hooty a forehead flick. Hooty yelped in pain, retracting into the door. "Oh, right. Five foot radius."

"Good Security System." The orange haired boy tapped Hooty on the cheek. "Now let us in."

"Password please! Hoot! Hoot!"

"Open sesame." Luz reflexively said her first thought.

"Beep! Wrong!"

"Fenrir Like Smoldering Fly." Jett said.

"Beep! Wrong!"

"What?"

"I choose a new password." Hooty said with a smile. "The old one was so Nordic."

Jett looked at him as if Hooty just said the dumbest thing ever. "Nordic? What- No Wait! I don't want to know. Just open the door."

"Password first!" Hooty countered.

"Nobody know the password." Katrina noticed, ears flicking.

"I know password." Hooty said in a high pitch.

"And what's this password?" Luz asked.

Surprisingly, the house demon told her his password.

"It's 'UnDeadMau'."

"UnDeadMau?" She suprised repeat after him.

"Smart move, Luz. Ladies first, of course." Jett said as Hooty swung the door opened and they walked through.

"Wow..." Luz commented in awe gazing at the inside.

This house was quite a wonder, even for those who were not from another world. The warm color scheme and blazing fire place, give homey feel to girl. The atmosphere of candle light is cosy and with a subtle scent of wood just relaxing.

Some items flying all over the room while a broom in the Sorcerer's Apprentice style sweeping up crumbs. On the wall behind the couch was a various amount of different items which was hanging like trophies. And a large owl like craving on the ceiling glowed slighty.

This place seemed to live. Luz thought. And technically, she's not wrong. Because the part of the wall was acutually breathing air.

"Welcome in the Owl House." Jett said as the door shut behind him, "Place free from social pressure, stress of the outside world..."

"And proper weapon safety rules." Katrina effortlessly picked a axe twice her head size up and leaned it against the wall.

"Mom! King! I'm home!"

Instead of hearing Mom or King as Jett expected, a silent answered him back.

"Hooty, where is everybody?"

Hooty's response was to cough up a paper ball which landed on the floor in front of Luz and Katrina. The two girls cringed and both had the same response: "Ew!"

Curious, Jett picked up the wet paper ball and straightened it out. The note simply said "The meat's in the freezer. I'm pretty busy 'til the end of the day. Don't wait and don't ask questions when I back."

It was signed Eda, but there was also a slightly sticky red pawprint.

"Well, Luz, it looks like you stick with us for a little longer."

"So what can I do to help?"

"You want to help us...seal Gytrash?" Jett and Katrina looked confused.

"You said Gytrash will try to track down you guys or me sooner or later. So helpping you is in my best interest."

"You can wait in here with Hooty."

"I'm in the Magic Realm. If I have to spend the rest of this day here, I take my chance to adventure." Luz explained her point of view. Plus, she had a hunch that getting alone with Hooty may be challenge on the same level as hunt Gytrash.

"It will be dangerous." Katrina reasonably said, "Gytrash is wild and unpredictable in his new form."

"I have some experience with dangerous and poisonous animals." One of the backup snakes picked that exact moment to crawled out Luz's book bag. They looked at snake which slithered out of the room immediately.

"You are weird." It wasn't insult. Just a simple statement of fact.

Still Luz felt a twinge of sadness at that.

"I hear that a lot."

"That's good thing." Jett chimed in gleefully, "Being weird make people like us special. Be proudly werido, Luz. "

"Jett is right, being weird isn't a bad thing." Katrina added when understand that her honest assessment was rather painful for the human girl.

Jett flicked up an ear, curious now. "I'm sorry, did you just say 'Jett is right'?"

"The first time and probably the last time in my life." She said, a hint of a tease back in her tone. "Now, where aunt Eda keep a sealing gems?"

"And this is when it gets interesting. I have no idea. So, we can have a contest to see who finds the bag first." Jett repiled as he moved over to the hall closet, beginning to pull out many various objects.

Katrina looked at Luz. The girl simply shrugged and walk to check in the sofa cushions.

The red head sighed, "I've got the basement."

After 30 minutes, Katrina returned to livingroom, where she saw her cousin with his hand in the hole in the wall. Someone else would be surprised seeing this but not her.

"Nothing." She told him, picking small spiders out of her hair.

"Me too." Jett said before yelled, "Luz, what about you?"

After ten full seconds of silence, they heard a sheepish "I found something!" from upstairs.

When Luz returned to livingroom she was covered with dust and cobwebs, and held a small bag.

"I found it in the loft." Opening it up she pulled another bag out and removed a few gems from it. Laying them out on the table she arranged them loosely in a line. "You've got a nice fake animal's skeletons collection, by the way."

"This isn't a collection. Hooty spits out there what's left of his a midnight snack." Jett explained, looking at two gems.

He put them back to the bag before said, "Okay, Kat, sealing gems are your thing."

"Let's see..." Katrina said to herself as she checked over the gems.

"Lunar Sapphire"

The first was a untypical. Purple like lavender flower. The two conjoined gemstones that's form an inverted lowercase "Y". The shorter and longer segments of the gemstone both have their own two facets, parallel to their respective segments.

"Lightning Opal."

The secon was look like a blue dumortierite in quartz. And the colors seem to pulsate.

"And Star Sunstone."

The last one was rather normal. The tetradecahedron shape gemstone, light yellowish with orange and red blotches.

"This is the best combination." She said, putting the other gems to bag.

"And is that all we need?" Luz asked, "Three small gems."

Katrina was momentarily surprised by the question before she answered. "Of course not. Gytrash evolves into its different form. So, we have to weakened it to the point where sealing spell could work. For this we need the Dawn Crystal. They does not occur naturally on the Boiling Isles and is produced artificially."

"Then we have a hard potion trial ahead of us." Jett came up to a pile of books, and pulled light purple colour book with a purple binding. "Get ready for work, ladies."

At that, Luz brightened, she ran to the closet and came back with a black witch hat on her head.

"I'm ready."

"Why did you put this on your head?" Jett asked, surprised and a little entertained.

"We'll do the witch stuff." Luz said, grinning ear-to-ear and practically bouncing in place. "So, I'm wearing the witch hat."

"This is just the dirtiest traffic cone in this house." He simply said.

Luz reached on top of her head and took off the "witch hat" she was wearing and wiped it off to reveal it was actually a traffic cone covered in dust and grime.

"Aw man."

See ya soon.
