Alright lovely readers this is the last entry I submitted for the RokuNami fanzine and it is a total treat!
This fanfic is based off Legend of Zelda...Or more specifically Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks. The Zelda game where Zelda becomes a ghost and helps Link out on his journey, but there are other Zelda references here and there.
I am not sure where I got this idea either because I honestly don't care for the Zelda and Link ship but I decided to try it with Roxas and Namine in mind and...I had loads of fun writing it. I hope you guys enjoy it.
Disclaimer: Kingdom Hearts belongs to Square Enix, this is just a fanfic written by a fan.
My name is Roxas, and I am a keyblade knight.
And fate threw me into a journey to save all the world. Assem told me so, but I hate that old man. I am just a teenager, and yet I have to shoulder this responsibility!
But I am not alone.
I came from the darkness, but when I started this dangerous journey, I was blinded by the light, and in my dreams, I saw a girl with blonde hair only wearing a white dress.
I woke up confused but then I heard a voice.
"Hello."
I turned and saw the girl I dreamt of watching over me. She had a curious expression.
"Who are-" I said.
The blonde-haired girl frowned.
"I am not sure who I am. All I know is my name is Namine."
There was a soft glow around her, and she looked down at her hands. "And I just appeared."
She turned back at me. Her blue eyes seemed desperate for something that makes sense.
"Who are you?" Namine asked.
"I'm Roxas."
My journey would never be the same after that. I remember talking to Namine, and Axel, Sora, and Riku looked at me like I was talking to air.
I knew she had powers, but it turns out I was the only one who could see her.
She could also float beside me. Namine was always there, in front of me, behind me, and beside me.
I initially thought she was a ghost, but she seemed upset over that idea.
It annoyed me at first. Namine always said I was reckless and hasty, and I didn't want someone constantly breathing down my neck about how to be a keyblade knight.
But then I was in an intense fight with some heartless vulpines, and it became overwhelming.
Then Namine unleashed some blinding light power.
"I am the hidden light!" Namine cried as I felt her power go through me.
I felt more powerful than I ever felt alone. I could slash heartless vulpine into bits.
Once again, my friends were dumbfounded.
"How did you do that, Roxas?" Sora asked.
Axel grinned. "Can you teach me?"
"First you get an imaginary friend and then this," Riku said.
I couldn't answer at first. But I turned to see Namine smiling at me.
"I guess I got a guardian with me," I said.
Sure it was weird how she would watch me as I slept and react when I talked to others. But eventually, I grew closer to her, even though I wasn't sure if she was even human or not.
"Finally, peace and quiet," I said as I laid back on the grass and watched the stars. I couldn't wait for peace to return to the world once more.
Namine smiled down on me. "You were very brave, Roxas."
"Maybe because you were always there beside me, I could never have come this far without you."
Namine gave me a cute smile.
"Namine."
"Yes, Roxas," she said.
"Maybe you could…."
"Hm?"
I was a bit too nervous to ask.
"Would you like to lay down beside me?"
Yes, I know it was much, but the stars were beautiful, and Namine was my partner.
"I would like that," Namine said.
Namine laid down in the grass beside me, and her warm glow felt so lovely.
We talked all night until I drifted into sleep. I was able to make her laugh and smile. She deserved it after all she had done for me.
I wonder so much how could a girl like that could come out of nowhere.
Our journey took us to a broken-down castle next. I had my keyblade in hand and was ready for hidden dangers. Namine floated beside me like an extra pair of eyes.
To our surprise, the throne room seemed to be lit up. Both of us hesitated in going in, but Namine touched my hand and gave me a reassuring look.
I walked in ready to wield my keyblade, but the throne room was quiet and decently decorated compared to the rest of the castle.
I stopped and blinked when I saw a young girl with short black hair sitting on the throne. But what was even stranger was she was wearing the same black cloak as I was.
I had so many questions.
She must have heard me because she lifted her head up and gave me an innocent look.
"It's been so long," the girl said.
"Who are you? Are you alright?" I said.
The girl gave a sad smile. "My name is Xion. I am a knight of this castle a few lifetimes ago."
I was shocked by what she said, and then she stood up and revealed her ghostly body.
"I was tasked to give a message to you Prince Roxas, and Princess Namine," Xion said.
"What?" Namine cried.
After a moment of shock, Namine moved closer as she realized Xion could see her.
"Lifetimes ago, Namine was the princess of light, and Roxas was the prince of darkness."
"They were destined to bring balance and peace in the world."
Xion looked a bit sad as she told this story.
"I was friends with both of you."
"The two of you were so powerful, I looked up to both of you."
"But the kingdom fell into turmoil, and both of you sacrificed yourselves to save everyone."
"The two of you were in love, but you also loved your kingdoms and would do anything to save them."
I was shocked. This was a lot to take in, who they were lifetimes ago. Namine looked overwhelmed, and I stood beside her, hoping to let her know that she was not alone.
Xion laced her hands together. "It was the most heroic thing ever."
A lot of things started to make sense now. But something was still lingering on my mind.
"But why is Namine a ghost?" I asked.
Xion looked distressed. "Xehanort knew if you two were together, he would lose, so he messed with the timeline where Namine isn't in the physical realm."
Namine gasped. Xehanort was terrible. I just wanted to wreck him after what he did to Namine.
Namine looked at her hands in horror as her very existence was tampered with.
"Namine..." I said hopelessly.
"But," Xion said. "If you defeat Xehanort, Namine could gain a physical body."
There was an uncertain tone in Xion's voice.
I clenched my hand.
"Well, I guess that means Namine, and I need to save the day," I said.
Namine had a determined look on her face as well.
"We need to see this through till the end," Namine said.
Xion gave a pained smile. "I wish you two luck. My lord, my lady. No, I know you two will make things right again."
"And once we save the kingdom, we will see you again, Xion," I said.
I really did mean it. As far as I was concerned, Xion was my friend.
"I am flattered, but I am just a spirit," Xion said.
"I would love to see you again, Xion," Namine said.
"Alright," Xion managed to smile genuinely. "I will see you both after your journey. Please be careful."
After we said goodbye to Xion, we knew where we needed to go. We needed to go to the castle that was seized by Xehanort. A castle possessed by dark power.
I saw the castle on the horizon line, and even though it was far, I could see clearly that the castle was corrupted by darkness.
I noticed Namine gave a nervous shiver.
"Namine, are you alright?" I said.
"I'm fine, Roxas," she said.
I had a hard time believing her.
"Maybe we should rest for the night," I insisted.
Namine tried to protest as the prophecy must be fulfilled, but I took her hand.
"I'm nervous too. Let's at least calm our nerves before we bring down Xehanort," Roxas said.
We sat under the stars again. Namine sat close to me, but I didn't mind, she seemed to find comfort in me, and I found comfort in her.
I was more determined than ever to finish my journey, so Namine could be free.
"Don't worry, once Xehanort is taking care of you won't be tied to me," I said.
"It would be nice for others to see me," Namine said.
"And I could pick up a pencil and draw."
"Really?" I said.
Namine smiled. "In my dreams, I can see myself drawing and dancing and being with others."
"I am sure you'll be great friends with Princess Kairi," I said, smiling.
Namine still looked like something was bothering her as she clenched her hands on her lap.
"Once this is all over, you'll be free, Roxas."
I was about to ask her what was bothering her, but there was something I felt like telling her.
"I would still want to be with you, Namine!" I said.
Namine's cheeks glowed pink. It was pretty cute, I admit.
"...Really?" Namine said.
"Yes, of course!" I said.
I was really bold. I was afraid I was revealing too much, but since we were alone, I may as well tell Namine that she is important to me.
Namine turned away. "I thought I was a burden on you."
No! No way!
"I thought you hated being stuck with me," I said.
"No!" Both of us cried.
My face was heating up as well, and both of us sat silent. I had to let Namine know that she will never be a burden, but I was waiting for the evening air to cool off my face.
Namine breathed in and then out. "Yes, even when this is all over, I still want to be with you, Roxas."
"I know this sounds very strange, but after spending time with you, I think I….I…."
It's not weird at all!
"I am about to sound even weirder!" I cried. "I know this sounds completely crazy because you're connected to me, but…."
Namine looked stunned.
"The more time I spent with you, the more feelings I started to feel," I said.
"Really?" Namine whispered.
I nodded. I was starting to sweat. I wasn't sure why I was revealing all this, but it felt so right.
"I know this sounds completely crazy, but it's true!" I cried.
Namine braced herself. She looked like she was trying to process what I was saying.
"I am in love with you, Namine!"
God, I hoped that wasn't too crazy to say.
Namine was shocked and looked like she was about to cry, and I was about to apologize.
"I love you too, Roxas!"
Now it was my turn to be shocked.
Xion said we were in love in another life. The logical part of me would tell myself that is no basis to fall in love with her. As weird as this was turning out, I was in love with her. I couldn't deny it even if I wanted to.
I held out my hand to her, which she took. Even if her hand wasn't solid, I could feel it: her presence, her warmth, her affection.
We both moved in closer, and slowly our lips met. I could feel it. I could feel Namine's lips on mine! Maybe I could feel her because we were connected by destiny. My heart felt whole, and soon we had our arms around each other.
My hands were on her back until I felt her soft blonde hair. We broke off, and Namine looked so happy as if she was relieved to finally touch someone.
We pulled into another long kiss before we slept under a tree with our hands laced together.
I saw Namine in my dream. We were in shallow water in what seemed like an endless blue sky. She smiled at me with her reassuring smile, and I took her hand. We were about to walk forward together, but the peaceful world we were in was starting to fill with dark clouds and lightning. Namine looked scared, and I was confused as well. But with Namine's hand in mine, I could weather any storm, and I was determined to get through. But as the grey clouds and the thunder surrounded us, I heard her voice.
"Roxas, wake up!"
I woke up and saw Namine over me. The sky was blue once more, and the sun shined through her transparent body.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," she smiled.
I smiled back at her and took her hand.
I will make things right, Namine, I thought.
The castle where Princess Kairi used to reign was swarming with dark power. The building was destroyed in a few places, windows were cracked, and tapestries with the kingdom's symbol were torn. But the entrance was wide open.
I stood by the open doors, and Namine floated beside me.
"Are you ready, Roxas?"
I smiled at her. "Yes, I am the chosen keyblade knight, aren't I?"
I walked in, and the commons were so devoid of life that it was almost chilling. There were no more servants, the room was dim, and there were plenty of broken shards on the ground.
The doors to the throne room fluttered open slightly with gusts of wind.
I summoned my keyblade before pulling the door open.
The throne room also looked ragged and empty until I saw the dark figure sitting on the throne.
The bearded man smiled at me as if a harmless visitor was here to be graced by his presence.
"So the chosen keyblade knight has finally arrived, after making me wait for so long," Xehanort said.
Namine and I were ready to attack, but Xenanort's smile grew, and his yellow eyes glowed.
"And you brought the invisible princess with you."
Namine winced as she realized Xehanort could see her, and I stood beside her with my keyblade in hand.
"You changed Namine's fate!" I cried. "I'll make you pay for this!"
Xehanort laughed as if I was simply trying to humor him.
"As if you two hearts were ever destined to have a happy face!" Xehanort said.
Xehanort waved his hands, and with the power of darkness, a bunch of paired figures appeared in the throne room. He gave us a pitiful look, and I could feel the fear in Namine as she felt the need to stay close to me.
"You may have heard that the two of you are destined, but there are millions of scenarios where your story ends in tragedy."
"No!" Namine cried as she shook her head.
"You're lying!" I cried as I pointed my keyblade.
Xehanort laughed again. "The two of you always put your destiny over your heart."
The dark figures that resembled Namine and me cried in pain and were destroyed, pair by pair.
Just then, Xehanort summoned his own blade. And pointed to the two of us.
"The two of you have no choice!"
Even though Namine was still scared, she grabbed my hand and gave me a determined look.
"Roxas, we can't let him win." Namine's blue eyes glowed.
I smiled, even if it wasn't right to beam with how serious everyone was right now. We were at the last trial, but with Namine, I knew I could defeat Xehanort.
"We won't let him win," I said.
I was in an attack stance, and Namine floated above me, powering me with her power of light. Xehanort was charging up his relentless power of darkness.
As much as I wanted to knock this spiteful old man back with my keyblade, I learned better. Instead, I used my keyblade to destroy the wisps of darkness filling the throne room. Namine also helped with her powers. Xehanort was determined to stir up more darkness, but Namine and I were here to create light.
I thought Xehanort was overwhelmed, so I made a quick dash to hit him on the side, but he faded from my attack! He wasn't as sluggish as I thought.
I searched for Xehanort.
"What's wrong? Afraid of the light?" I said.
"You can stop this Xehanort," Namine pleaded.
We heard a chuckle which caused us to turn. The old man was surrounded by darkness and smiled at us again.
"You have sealed your fate, boy," Xehanort said.
And then Xehanort charged at me with multiple sword thrusts that were hard to deflect. I kept on staggering back, overwhelmed. Namine held on from behind me.
"Please don't hurt him!" Namine cried. "He is precious to me."
Namine tried to protect me with her light, and it helped me from taking too much damage, but I still needed to fight back.
I frantically swung my keyblade, and I made the Xehanort stagger a bit, but I was running out of breath.
"Roxas," The sound of Namine's voice woke something in me.
"I'll protect you," she said.
Namine charged up her power.
"Light!" She cried.
As spheres of light surrounded us and then Namine used them to attack Xehanort.
With the sound of his screams, I picked myself up and used magic to heal me, I got into a fighting position again, and despite visible injuries, the bald man smirked.
"Darkness cannot be defeated," Xehanort said.
His hand glowed red, and the floor below us cracked. The cracks glowed red like lava, I scrambled to keep my footing, but Namine couldn't protect me from this.
"Roxas!" Namine cried.
I looked up at her, I was just as scared as she was, but I couldn't fail.
"Darkness!" Xehanort cried.
Magma-like flames were summoned, and I could feel my skin heat up as they came to me, but I had to prove I was just as swift as Xehanort, so I swung my blade to deflect them. But I could hear Namine's frantic cries above me.
Namine held on to me again, but I couldn't stop swinging.
"Please work! Please work! Please work!" Namine cried.
I didn't think the light would save me from this. I felt the ground heat up like iron as I deflected each fire wisp.
"Light!" Namine cried.
Suddenly my feet weren't touching the ground. Everything felt slow as I looked behind me and saw there were angel wings on my back. I was just as surprised, but then Namine gestured to Xehanort.
"Roxas!" Namine cried.
I was ready. The wings made me move faster than I ever could, and I attacked Xehanort with multiple airstrikes. I kept on attacking until our blades clashed, and I was face to face with him.
I gritted my teeth as I tried to knock him back, but no matter what, Xehanort grinned.
"You are still the prince of darkness," he said.
I grunted, and both of us were knocked back. My wings disappeared, and I landed on my feet where the ground was back to normal. Namine floated down to me, wondering if I was ok. We both turned when we heard Xehanort's laugh. He pointed his blade right at us.
"One way or another, I will destroy you!" Xehanort said.
The dark beam was so fast that I thought I was doomed, but a colorful blur got in front of me. I saw three familiar blade wielders stopping the beam with a triple spin attack. Once they were done, they posed in front of us.
"You started the party without us, Roxas," Axel said as he turned to me.
"Yeah, I am very offended," Riku said.
"Well, there is still time to play," Sora said with a cocky grin.
And the three of them began to slash the heartless that were appearing around the throne room.
"You guys," Roxas said.
Riku, Axel, and Sora cornered Xehanort with their blades, and it looked like we were winning. We were strength in numbers and in hearts.
"It's over, Xehanort," Sora said.
"Your reign of terror is finished," Axel said.
Xehanort laughed once more. He almost sounded like he split a side laughing.
"I can destroy all of you," The old man said.
Axel, Sora, and Riku lunged for the smug man.
But I didn't know Xehanort teleported with the help of the darkness, and I nearly lost my breath when he teleported next to Namine and me.
"Including that invisible princess," Xehanort said.
I had a terrible feeling as Xehanort appeared before Namine and me. His face was devious and scary, and I was too slow to react as he raised his blade and cut through Namine.
I was too shocked, I thought Namine was invulnerable, but she cried out as her ghostly body was cut and she fell to the ground.
"Namine!"
It didn't matter what else was going on now. I took Namine in my arms as she whimpered in pain. Light was escaping from her cut that went from her chest right down to her legs.
"Namine! Namine!" I cried as tears escaped from my eyes.
Xehanort laughed uncontrollably, and I held Namine closer as I glared at the pathetic man.
"Roxas, that girl," Axel said.
Axel, Sora, and Riku were frozen, and I could tell they could clearly see Namine in my arms.
"I told you I could destroy the princess of light! And now darkness will reign forever!" Xehanort said as he raised his hands and summoned more darkness.
Riku summoned his sword. "We need to keep fighting for Roxas!"
Sora and Axel summoned their keyblades and attacked the heartless. The sound of keyblades and bursts of magic was everywhere, but I only had my eyes on Namine as the light was fading from her eyes. I took her hand.
"Namine, please don't leave me," I cried.
"Rox-as!" Namine said hoarsely.
"Namine, you're going to be ok!" I cried. "Please be ok!" I kept on trying to convince myself and her.
"Roxas, please keep going," She cried.
My eyes strung. "I can't lose you, Namine! I can't…" My cries drowned out any other words.
"You need to save everyone," Namine said. "I-I can't…."
Namine's hand was fading in my hand, and her legs were fading away.
"No!" I cried.
Namine placed her other hand on my cheek and tried to smile.
"I love you, Roxas," Namine said softly.
I held her closer. "Don't go!" I pleaded.
"I believe in you..." She whispered.
And before I knew it, Namine faded into a bright light that faded away from me.
"Namine!" I cried as I clenched my fists and punched the ground.
I couldn't move, not without her. She was on this journey with me from the very beginning, and she died.
I heard soft chuckles over me.
"It will be easy to destroy you," Xehanort said.
But just as I was about to look up, there was a clash with Sora, Riku, and Axel guarding me.
"Roxas…" Axel cried.
"Roxas, please don't give up," Sora said.
"I'm sure Namine wouldn't want you to give up," Riku said,
With another chuckle, Xehanort slashed through my three friends and scattered them across the room. I got on my feet and summoned my keyblade, but I still felt numb after losing her.
But Xehanort getting enjoyment out of hurting my friends made my eyes burn. I lunged at him, for my friends, for Namine. I cried out in anger, and Xehanort clashed my blade strike. I tried to knock him back, but Xehanort smiled.
"I told you, you are destined for tragedy, little prince," Xehanort said. "You and the girl."
I couldn't speak, only cry in anger as I slashed at his blade again.
I panted and felt I could only see red as I saw Xehanort with his cold gaze and smile. He smiled even though he was a murderer. I slashed multiple times even though Xehanort deflected all my strikes. I wanted so much to strike him like he struck Namine. But then Xehanort hit me with his fist and knocked me to the ground.
"Roxas!" My friends cried.
I slowly started to pick myself up.
"It isn't too late," Xehanort said.
I didn't want to bother listening to this old man's nonsense anymore. I raised my keyblade again, but Xehanort raised his hands and summoned some darkness.
"Join me in the darkness, and you will have unlimited power. Power that can bring back your princess!" Xehanort said.
I froze. What was Xehanort planning?
"Don't do it, Roxas!" Axel cried.
"Roxas, you can't!" Sora cried desperately.
Xehanort held out his hand. "Join me, and become the prince of darkness once more. And with those powers, you could do anything."
I looked away. I was so conflicted because I would give anything to get Namine back, but…
"No way!" I cried.
"I would do anything to get Namine back, but…." I glared at the old man. "Namine would never want me to do this!"
Just then, I felt light surround me. It was a familiar light. It felt like the girl most precious to me.
My keyblade lit up, and the throne room felt different. Axel, Riku, and Sora were stunned. And to my surprise, even Xehanort looked threatened. His yellow eyes showed fear.
Namine's power was still with me, and I charged at the old man. I hit him and was satisfied by his pained grunts. I hit him in multiple areas, and this time he couldn't deflect me.
He managed to summon his blade, but I knocked his summoned blade out of his hand and on the ground. He summoned his blade a few more times, but I knocked each blade out of his hand. This time there was rage and frustration on his face.
Xehanort grabbed my arms and tried to weaken me with darkness. It hurt, the darkness represented anger, hopelessness, emptiness, but Namine's light helped me power through. I summoned my keyblade again and slashed through Xehanort leaving a gash of light. Something that contrasted the darkness he coveted so much.
The old creature of darkness was weakened. I slashed Xehanort upward with all my might, and he flew in the air until he fell to the ground. Xehanort gasped for breath.
I walked up to the evil old man, but before I could give the finishing blow, I glared at him.
"Why do you do this when you know you are destined to fail each time?" I asked.
Xehanort smirked.
"I may fail millions of times, but I can also ruin something in each universe," Xehanort said.
"But if I can ruin the princess's fate, then in one universe, I can take over with darkness."
I glared at him and placed my keyblade over his chest.
"We will meet again," Xehanort said in one last grin.
I unleashed the power of light through my keyblade as one last finishing blow on Xehanort. The ability to purify a heart. If this old man even had a heart. Xehanort lit up and disappeared in particles of light. I fell on my knees when this was all over.
"I did it, Namine."
Axel, Riku, and Sora came to me. Riku praised me for my heroics. Axel was happy that I was ok. Sora thanked me for saving the world.
But after that, they all apologized for losing Namine. They all felt like she would've been a nice girl to meet like they knew her before.
With my journey fulfilled, the kingdom could finally rebuild. With everyone returning to the kingdom and magic restored, the kingdom was back to its former glory. Princess Kairi could return.
The princess returned to her castle and smiled at me. She was grateful for my heroic sacrifice and invited me as an honored guest at the ball.
"There is a room for you to stay here as my eternal thanks for saving us all, chosen hero," the princess said.
I bowed. "Thank you, your highness."
Just then, I thought I could see Namine beside Sora and Kairi, smiling at me proudly. I blinked, and then she was gone.
"If you need anything at all, just ask, anything to help you mourn for Princess Namine," said Princess Kairi.
"In my dreams, I saw in another time long ago I was friends with Princess Namine." The princess had a melancholy look in her eyes. "I wish Xehanort would pay for what he did."
I thanked the princess and slipped away until the ball started. I stood upstairs and watched the dancing pairs. I couldn't help but imagine Namine and I down there dancing in circles.
I turned away. "I'm sorry, everyone."
I truly was sorry. I did care about my friends. Sora, Axel, Riku, Princess Kairi. But losing Namine hurt too much.
I retreated to the room Princess Kairi gave to me and didn't bother to turn on the lights. I closed the door and walked toward the bed in the dark. The only light was the moon and stars from the open balcony door. I sat on the bed with my back to the headboard and closed my eyes. Because sleep was the only way, I could forget that living was too hard without her.
But this sleep felt different. I felt so relaxed, and I opened my eyes to find myself in a familiar world of an endless blue sky and clear water at my feet.
I looked around and walked forward, I couldn't see anything around me, but I felt something. Soon I saw light particles dancing around in a mesmerizing way. As I continued to look, the particles made the shape of a star.
I tried to reach out, but I didn't want to disturb anything.
I was about to turn away.
"Roxas…"
My heart jumped at the familiar voice, and the light particles sparkled and made a blinding glow, and then I saw a beautiful girl with blonde hair.
"Namine…" I said almost breathlessly.
Namine had tears streaming from her eyes. "I missed you…."
I cried too, she was here!
"Namine!" I wrapped my arms around her, and she wrapped her arms around me as well.
This may have been just a dream, but it felt so good to see her again that it was like no tragedy ever happened. But then I had something weighing on my heart.
"I want to stay with you, Namine."
Namine frowned and looked away. "I want you to be happy, Roxas.
I laced my hand with hers.
"I am willing to fade away to be with you."
Namine squeezed my hand and stood by my side, looking at the endless horizon before us.
"We will meet again, Roxas."
And in another world in another time, a handsome blonde-haired prince and a beautiful blonde-haired princess smiled at each other as if they knew each other all their lives.
"Typical prince and princess stuff," Kairi said.
Xion smiled. "No, they knew each other in another life."
I thank you for reading this fanfic! I am not gonna lie, while I was writing this fanfic I was tempted to make this into a multichapter fic but my submission had to be just one chapter.
I mean I could still do that but my interest in Kingdom Hearts kind of waned and I only came back because there were sign ups for a RokuNami fanzine and I wanted to try it.
I apologize if you readers were expecting some more...I will write more Kingdom Hearts fanfictions I just want to switch to my other fandoms for now.
Until then, this is Lady Emiko signing out. Cheers!
