~Breaking Point~
"Mom always said cupcakes made monsters happy..." Randall stated, catching the baseball his cyclops roommate threw to him.
"Well, you certainly make me happy, the cupcakes are a bonus." Mike laughed, beaming a smile that brought one of the lizard monster's face. "Still, pretty cool to have a genius and baker for a best chum!"
Randall smiled in flattery at the compliment. He couldn't even respond to that other than showing his obvious gratitude and happiness at how much Mike was interested in his talents and was genuinely involved in his life. They'd been through a lot together. He's finally starting to come out of the dark pit he'd sunk into, got his learner's permit and on his way to earning his driver's license. Now, they're close to acing their exams and on their way to become career Scarers.
Throwing the baseball back, Mike adjusted his MU cap and caught it. This was fun. He's gotten such a grasp on Randall and his personality, it was if he'd known his roommate for years. He'd become connected to Randall and developed such a bond with him, he'd call the lizard monster the brother he'd never had. They both had it rough, but they prevailed through it and Mike got to understand the value of what a true friend meant.
"Nice catch, Mike." Randall congratulated his friend.
"It was nothing. You catch this and you can take the wheel of my car like a pro." Mike said, swinging his hand back and throwing the ball. "Let's see how fast you are when not behind the wheel, pal!"
Randall hurriedly scurries after the ball and catches it in one of his hands, giving a small smirk. Heading back to Mike, he casually dropped the ball in front of the smaller green monster, chuckling. "So, you got the keys with you? I might be getting my license soon." Randall remarked.
"There's the confidence and eagerness of my favorite lizard monster!" Mike stated, getting to his feet and patting his roommate on his scaly back.
"If I end up passing my driving test, my mom said she'll buy me a car." Randall revealed, feeling a little giddy at making another step towards being independent and getting to see his dream of driving become a reality. "I'm so excited, Mike!"
Mike enjoyed when his best friend's happy. It certainly was a welcome change to his roommate and it was kinda infectious, both of them had grown even closer towards one another. College was still quite rough, but they're getting through it. Randall's new medications prescribed to him by his doctor were doing the trick, with some slight bouts of increased anxiety popping out due to side effects, but so far, it's been actually improving and putting the lizard monster into a brighter mental state and healthier mindset.
Taking another cupcake from the tray, Mike undid the wrapping and put an arm around Randall, smiling as he leaned against him. Flashing a warm smile, his teeth showing, Randall leaned back against Mike, feeling happy that his pal's enjoying his cupcakes.
"I'm happy for you, lizard boy! Congrats on the new car, my reptilian chum!" Mike responded by playfully poking Randall's snout and giving him a side hug.
Chuckling, Randall rolled his eyes and returned the affectionate gesture. "It's not happened yet. I not a fully licensed to drive monster at the moment." Randall commented, though he's happy with Mike's boundless optimism and faith in him and his abilities.
"Learner's permit and you're due to take the test soon, I'd say it's ninety-nine percent given you're getting a car, Randy!" Mike beamed, giving Randall a big hug.
Oh, hugs were something Randall had grown to love even more than he did. It felt so welcoming and comfortable when he and Mike hugged. From all the sleepless nights and bad days, he always welcomed the long, skinny arms wrapping around his waist and pull him in. He fought to keep from blushing and changing his color to pink, hoping not to have their moment ruined by him changing colors. But he felt so happy, he'd never want to let go of Mike whenever he felt the darkness pulled from his mind and see the smaller monster not letting him go whenever he needed a friend there with him.
"I'd say it's more like seventy-five percent a sure thing, Mike." Randall remarked, getting a little technical.
"It's still a big step for you!" Mike said, hugging Randall even tighter and smiling at him, beaming with endless pride and appreciation for his roommate. "And it's amazing, but I'm sure my super technical pal already knows that, huh?"
Okay, he might be a little technical, but he knew Mike was joking along with him. But he's certain he can pass his driving test, he's had more than enough practice in empty parking lots and some of their very illegal practice drives through town, though thankfully they weren't caught.
"You always are such an optimist, aren't you, Mike?" Randall sighed happily. "I've always loved that about you." Mike smiled at that.
"Gotta look on the bright side of life and besides, our future is bright!" Mike smirked, pointing to the both of them. "Mike Wazowski and Randall Boggs, we're two of a kind and two remarkable monsters! Smartest pair of pals around!"
Randall smiled and closed his eyes, hugging Mike a little tighter. "I love you, Mike."
"I love you too, Randy." Mike responded, returning the gesture.
Randall loved Mike, he always had since the two of them had basically become brothers. They're like actual siblings, even closer than the so-called brothers and sisters involved in those overrated fraternities. He didn't know what he'd do without Mike, he honestly didn't want to think about it. Mike's his brother, he's more than just a friend, much more and even in the face of adversity, they'd fight the darkness as brothers and chums.
They broke the hug, but still smiled at each other. Randall squinted his eyes a little bit, he'd forgotten to grab his glasses from the dorm when they'd went out. Mike missed seeing his four-eyed lizard pal. Sure, Randall's a cute monster and the way he smiles as well as his features and appearance make him both an adorable and scary monster, though the glasses increased the adorable nerdy getup his roommate had and it made him that much more likable.
"Stupid light's making things a bit blurry. Wish I had grabbed my glasses when we came out here." Randall complained, blinking numerous times and squinting his eyes, letting them get used to the sunlight breaking through the clouds.
The sun had to break through the clouds. Mike knew of Randall's eye sensitivity, guess even this wholesome moment can't last forever. The shade under the tree was still keeping them go, but the lizard monster's poor eyes.
"Yeah. I miss seeing the completed look of my roomie being the likable dorky monster I know." Mike remarked, chuckling, as he put an arm around Randall and adjusted his cap to keep the sun from getting in his eye.
"I suppose I am kinda a dork, but I'm a strong dork." Randall remarked, feeling Mike taking one of his hands and squeezing it gently. "I know. Don't think lowly of myself, gotta keep my self esteem and confidence in the green."
"You're cooler as a dork, Randy. I've got the best roommate a monster can ask for!" Mike complimented Randall, making sure the lizard knows he's cared about. "I'm a dork too, nothing to be ashamed of."
Cooler as a dork? Sometimes Randall thought Mike was saying some of it just to keep him from feeling sad, but those were his bad thoughts trying to drown him in the darkness. Mike's genuine and honest when they talk, it made him feel good. Mike's doing a better job at helping him with his depression than the university guidance counselor.
"You're so amazing and I would kill someone for you if you asked me to." Randall commented, he didn't mean the part about killing anybody though. He's a kind monster.
"Just don't do the latter, don't want my favorite monster getting the boot to the human world." Mike added, laughing. "But I'd do the same for you."
Taking his cap off, Mike looked it at for a moment, and then placed the hat on Randall's head. He made sure to adjust it and move the fronds outta the way. Randall felt the hat on his head, moving it a little to get it to fit more comfortably and pushing his fronds to the side. It fit, even shielding his eyes from the sunlight.
"Why'd you do that?" Randall asked, happy the light's out of his eyes, but why would Mike allow him to wear that hat? He could very well request to get an MU hat of his own, he just wasn't much of a hat wearing monster, to be honest.
The hat smelled like Mike, it was as if the monster had worn the headgear for years. Despite being years old, it was still in good condition.
"Saw the sun bothering you, felt you needed a hat and eh, it's not doing me any favors, you can wear it." Mike responded, smiling. "Plus, I think Frank would be happy to know that I met a wonderful monster like you. It fits and looks nice, I'd say it roars you."
"Roars you? No, Mike, that's too dumb." Randall cringed, shaking his head but laughing.
"We're teenagers, we're bound to do some dumb cringe." Mike remarked, chuckling.
He didn't have a mirror. He wondered how he'd look in the hat, his mom always said he looked good in a hat. He needs to get his glasses from the dorm first.
"Thanks. I dunno if I should wear it, since it's your hat." Randall commented, but Mike brushed his concerns off.
Randall's more than deserving of wearing it, besides he's not going to let the sun bother his friend's eyes and anyway, he's Randall Boggs, genius, cupcake baker, student at Monsters University with a learner's permit soon to be driver's license. He's wearing it and proudly so. "It's fine." Mike shrugged.
"It's just a worn out hat owned by some old fart." commented Johnny, walking by with his fraternity brothers. "You two are in over your heads, it takes more than good grades to be a monster, and you two are too soft to be monsters."
Randall cringed in disgust at Johnny's words. He thought being in with the cool kids was what he wanted, but he couldn't stand these arrogant and entitled idiots. Johnny and Sullivan were especially annoying, the blue idiot ended up trashing their dorm room when he stole that stupid pig.
"I'd say we're doing fine. I guess being a big, scary monster means keeping a C average." Randall sarcastically chimed in, directing that jab towards Sullivan.
"We'll be Scarers, just you wait, Johnny! I just gotta have the brains and not be some burly jerk and I'll be working at Monsters Inc. in no time." Mike added, getting under the fraternity leader's skin, which was a rarity.
'I'll be sure to still that disrespectful tongue by taking it out on your little lizard buddy." Johnny threatened, shooting a threatening glare at Randall, with his fraternity brothers laughing. "You don't mess with Roar Omega Roar unless you want to start trouble."
Mike fumed when he heard them threaten Randall. He saw Randall gulp and pale slightly, taking a couple steps back. Insulting Frank and threatening his best friend with violence, Mike had tolerated a lot during his life, but he wasn't going to stand for this.
"No, you're looking to start trouble if you think you can threaten my best friend!" Mike yelled, angrily as he narrowed his eye and growled at Johnny.
Johnny pretended to be intimidated, not noticing Mike reaching for the cupcake tray. "Chip, Reggie, show this tennis ball what happens when you insult Roar Omega Roar's president!"
Chip and Reggie nodded and made an advance towards the two monsters.
"I thought you'd have more sense, but I guess getting your ass beat will make you understand why you don't belong here." Johnny cruelly stated. "But I guess the un-scary stick to the pathetically weak."
"Randall's not weak, he's stronger than you ever will be!" Mike screamed, throwing the tray and hitting the larger monster. "Randy, hurry and disappear!" He yelled to his friend, making a break for it and running under the dazed jock's legs.
Randall yelped and quickly disappeared, scurrying away from the scene before he could be grabbed by them. Groaning, rubbing the icing off his face, Johnny found the two monsters had evaded them and escaped. Chet was about to say something, but Johnny smacked him to shut him up and angrily stormed off.
Meanwhile, Mike and Randall had taken refuge in one of the campus bathrooms. Panting and taking a moment to collect themselves, they sat on the tiled floor, before busting out laughing. The whole thing was absurd, but it was so awesome to actually get under the skin of a so-called elite monster and for Mike to blindside him by hitting him with the cupcake tray.
"Mike, that was nuts! Never thought you'd strike Johnny!" Randall excitedly breathed out, finding satisfaction in seeing Johnny get his just desserts.
"He wasn't gonna disrespect you, when he did that, it was all bets were off!" Mike revealed, catching Randall off guard by the revelation. He didn't do that? He hit Johnny for threatening him? "I won't let anyone hurt you."
"Y-You did that f-for me?" Randall choked, sniffling and trying to hold back the urge to cry.
Randall didn't know what to say when he heard that. Nobody had ever came to his side by retaliating against his tormentors. He didn't expect Mike to have a temper like that, but it warmed his heart knowing Mike did it for him. He felt happy knowing Mike had done it for him.
"Mike... I don't know what to say..." Randall stuttered, his mouth slightly open and tears of joy in his eyes, threatening to fall.
"You don't have to say anything." Mike replied, taking Randall's hand and squeezing it. "I'd do it again. I'm not worried about getting in trouble, I'll talk to the Dean about it. She already knows you struggled with depression and it doesn't matter if he tries to damage control, he'll get his due for messing with us."
Randall sniffled, wiping some tears away and smiling, taking Mike into his arms and hugging him. "You really are such a remarkable and fantastic monster, Mike. There won't ever be another monster like you."
"No stupid bully is gonna put you in the dark again! I won't stand for anyone trying to hurt my best friend and brother!" Mike smiled, hugging Randall back and sighing contently. "We've been through too much to let them get to us."
Mike's right. Johnny's wrong about them, he tried to get in the lizard monster's head and scare him, but Mike wasn't gonna stand for it and whacked the bully good for his transgressions. He would've never been able to grow as much as he's done, heck the smaller monster had likely saved his life. When he was all alone and overcame with despair, his best chum had come to save him.
"You're right, Mike. You've done so much for me already." Randall whispered, choking back a sob and sniffing. "I couldn't ask for a better pal."
"It's what brothers are for." Mike revealed, sniffing with tears of joy filling his eye.
"Right." Randall sniffled.
From outside the campus bathroom the only thing that was heard were the soft cries of the two teenage monsters as they held each other. For them, the campus and everything surrounding it was drowned out and the only thing that remained was them.
"You're my best friend, Randall. You always will be and that won't ever change." Mike said, hugging Randall even tighter.
Sniffing, Randall's tears fell onto Mike, curling around his best friend and nuzzling his head. "You're my best friend too. The perfect pal."
Life was cruel and unforgiving, but even in some of the more challenging times, through all the pain, Randall knew that as long as he had Mike with him, he'd continue on the path set for him. In this cruel and harsh world, he'd found that at least one monster cares about him, enough to even attack a bully.
Touching the cap, Randall got ready to take it off. But Mike stopped him from removing it. "Nah, you can wear it for as long as you want, lizard boy." Mike reassured him.
"Really?" Randall asked.
"Yeah. Since we're in a bathroom, you can check yourself out in the mirror, my best buddy!" Mike commented, before playfully jabbed one of Randall's arms. "But between you and me, I think you wear that cap well!"
Randall whined and blushed slightly, but kept himself from changing colors. "Aw, Mike!" Randall groaned, though he did appreciate the compliment. "Let's just go get my glasses and use the mirror in our dorm. Besides, it smells in here."
"Suit yourself." Mike said, getting to his feet. "But add the cap with the glasses, you'll really be rockin' that look!"
"I dunno about that." Randall commented, adjusting the cap. "Guess, I'll see about getting a campus cap of my own. The hat's starting to grow on me."
"You up for a game of ping-pong?" Mike asked, helping the lizard monster to his feet.
"As soon as I get my glasses, we can play." Randall replied, exiting the bathroom with his best friend walking beside him. He smiled, putting his tail around Mike, who put an arm around him while marking their way back to the dormitories.
Nothing was going to bring them down. Mike and Randall had a future ahead of them, one they plan on seeing through together. Proudly wearing the cap, Randall's moved by Mike defending him from Johnny, but also reaffirming to him that they're brothers. Randall loved Mike and it became even more clear to the lizard monster that his roommate loved him back.
As brothers and chums, they're stuck together.
The end.
I can imagine Mike having a temper if he's pushed too far, despite not being physically strong. It's brave and compassionate for a monster to stand up for a friend, even give some much needed payback to an arrogant jerk. But Randall and Mike having a brotherly bond is a cute idea that can go so far. Please be sure to review and leave feedback. RandallBeast19, out!
