The Reichenbach Fall

The Silent End

As she tucked herself away in a corner of the train – her one-way ticket out of London brought through a friend tucked in her coat pocket to ensure he wouldn't find her so soon – the heartbroken young woman closed her eyes, wishing with all her might that when she opened them again, it was all just a dream; another one of her horrible nightmares that she'd wake up from.

It wasn't a dream though and when she opened her eyes again, she saw the buildings of the city she'd made her home fly past her, reminding her of just how quickly her life had changed.

Wiping away the tear that had fallen down her cheek, the young woman pulled out her MP3 player, putting her headphones in and turning the volume up to full, hoping that if it didn't wake her up, the music would at least drown out her dark thoughts and aching memories.

Setting the little devise to shuffle, she didn't know whether the laugh or cry as the first song came on. Singing along under her breath, she felt a calm catharsis wash over her as her music – as always – put into words the thoughts and feelings she never could.

There's a hole in your logic
You who know all the answers
You claim science ain't magic
And expect me to buy it

Goodbye Mr A
You promised you would love us
But you knew too much
Goodbye Mr A
You had all the answers
But no human touch

If life is subtraction
Your number is up
Your love is a fraction
It's not adding up

The upbeat song fit her mood so well, it was almost impossible. His deductions really were like magic sometimes and despite everything that had happened, she knew she had to say goodbye to him. He really did have all the answers, she thought as her eyes welled up again, but in the end, his number really was up.

So busy showing me where I'm wrong
You forgot to switch your feelings on
So, so superior, are you not?
You'd love a little bit but you forgot

Not sure which Holmes she's thinking about at this point – both had hurt her so much, though in honesty, she was only so incredibly furious with one of them – the one who was still around to make it all better.

Goodbye Mr A
The world was full of wonder
'Til you opened my eyes
Goodbye Mr A
Wish you hadn't blown my mind
And killed the surprise

By the end of the song though – and through a watery smile as Cops & Robbers played next – she was sure of one thing. She never regretted all that she'd learned. Yes, it had made her a harder person, a colder person. She saw so much now, and was so rarely surprised by anything around her. She was constantly bored and never satisfied in anything for long, but... she wouldn't change what she'd learned and been through for anything in this world.

Sometimes – very rarely, but sometimes – the pain and heartache really were a price worth paying.
