Chapter One

A silvery IceWing darted through the clouds, soaring down when he reached the mountain. He cautiously opened the boulder-door, clutching the SkyWing egg in his talons.

"Hvitur?" whispered a voice from inside the cave.

"It's me, Kestrel," he responded softly. "I have the egg."

The dragonet inside the eggshell shifted. It would be hatching soon. The Brightest Night was that night, and the SkyWing was the last dragonet they needed to complete the five Dragonets Of Destiny.

Hvitur slipped through the cave entrance, met with the rusty-red and sandy-yellow faces of Dune and Kestrel.

"Where's Webs?" he asked.

Kestrel's eye twitched. "You were gone too long. We feared the worst. Webs went to get a RainWing egg in case you didn't come back."

Webs the SeaWing grasped a RainWing egg carefully in his claws.

What stupid, lazy dragons, he thought as he remembered how easy it had been to steal the egg of the dragonet. The sun was beginning to rise in the distance, and the three full moons were starting to fade.

CRACK!

Part of the eggshell splintered, cracks spiderwebbing throughout the surface. Soon, a tiny green dragonet was held in Webs' teal talons instead of an egg. Her scales immediately changed to a pale orange, followed by deep magenta. She squeaked as Webs.

WHAM!

Webs was thrown into the side of a mountain by a powerful force. He spiraled down onto the ground, struggling to stay aloft and keep the RainWing safe. The RainWing snarl-squeaked upwards and turned bright red.

We need this dragonet. If Hvitur didn't make it back with the SkyWing… He shook off the thought. Hvitur would be fine.

He glanced upwards and gasped at what he saw. A SkyWing with rubies and diamonds embedded in her orange scales flapped down to land next to him.

"Well, well, well," hissed Queen Scarlet.

Webs hid the dragonet behind him, but it was too late. Scarlet had seen the tiny dragon.

"A SeaWing, with a SkyWing dragonet? How odd."

She thinks the dragonet is a SkyWing?

Of course, he realized a moment later. She turned red, probably the color for anger. Also the color of SkyWings.

"And a dragonet that just hatched, no less," the queen went on. "This doesn't have anything to do with a certain prophecy, now does it?"

She reached forward lightning-fast and grasped Webs' neck in her claws.

The tiny RainWing watched as the green dragon's neck snapped and he fell to the ground. She felt a pang of a feeling she'd later know as sadness, but only for a moment. The green dragon had only held her. He didn't look like her, and she was pretty sure he wasn't her father.

"Hello, little dragonet," said the orange dragon menacingly. But before she could do anything, the sunlight touched the RainWing's scales and she opened her mouth. A black venom shot out from her front fangs towards the queen, but it did not reach her. It instead landed on the tail of the green dragon and began eating away at his scales.

The orange dragon stopped cold. "Venom," she murmured, studying the black liquid. She turned towards the RainWing and gasped at her scales, which were now a blueish-purple color.

"RainWing," she breathed. The orange dragon then reached out a talon and scooped up the tiny RainWing. "I think I'll keep you. You could be a very valuable asset."

And she felt something, something she didn't dare to ever say aloud and something that she hadn't felt since she was a little dragonet. Something that felt like… respect? Admiration? No.

Something more like… love. Love, for this tiny, fierce little rainbow dragonet.

She studied the dragonet, who was now a deep golden-yellow.

"I think I'll call you Glory."
