So my first fanfic, enjoy
The hot sun was beginning to peek over the horizon, as the lone scavenger trudged across the dunes,
Days of exhaustion that would have caught up with him, had he not a mission to complete,
His one goal, to kill a dragon.
Agate was bored out of her mind; it wasn't that her life was exceptionally dull, more the fact that she would be attending Jade Mountain Academy in a days' time, she had waited long enough now being five years old, well she couldn't really blame anyone for that, there were only so many places for sand wings anyway and it probably helped to have sunny as a big sister otherwise she might have had to wait much longer, or not, her mother did like to keep things fair amongst her subjects, it was probably more due to the fact that Thorn had reserved a place for agate a few weeks after hatching, the list of sand wings trying to get enrolled wasn't short either, but for now it was the excruciating wait, knowing only a day was between her, and school.
It was around mid-day when Kizar walked into the scorpion den; he was mostly ignored, as the hulking dragons went about their business, hissing and growling at each other, he didn't understand why the dragons had stopped caging and eating people (for the most part) but it suited him just fine, he was reminded of his purpose, as his spear caught the suns blinding rays, he smiled at the thought of his weapon, the long steel shaft, with a thick triangular point at the end roughly as wide as his hand where the head joined the shaft.
He shook himself from the train of thought,
"Not right now, I need to focus on the mission at hand" he murmured to himself, all he had to do was restock on water and he would be able to continue on, to eliminate his target, the one that dragons called princess agate.
Agate munched absentmindedly on her lizard jerky, looking out towards the golden dunes, the setting sun beginning to cast long shadows across the landscape.
"Agate honey?" Thorn murmured, as she poked her head through Agate's door,
"Yes mom?" Agate answered, not diverting her eyes from the view of the sunset stained dunes,
"I was wondering if you'd like to come have dinner with your father and I, seeing that you'll be embarking on your grand journey tomorrow" Thorn announced in her grand queenly voice, complete with perfect posture, causing Agate to snap her head around to look at her,
"Mom!" Agate shouted a smile growing on her snout at her mother's overly pompous expression, causing Thorn to crack a massive grin,
"Of course, I'll come down, we won't be able to have dinner together for a while after all" Agate said giving her mother a hug.
Kizar was crouched outside the gate of the sand wing stronghold , the gargantuan structure loomed over him castling a long shadow across the sand, though humans had been widely accepted into ordinary life, the stronghold had remained off limits, most likely to deter possible thieves, Kizar looked over to the guards that were positioned at the entrance, it would be near impossible to get through; unless, no it would be impossible to climb the wall, or, it was now he realized that the "Dragon flame" cactus he had brought was going to come in handy.
Agate sat down at the table; dinner already prepared
"So, you excited?" smolder asked
"Well, what exactly about dad?" Agate joked smiling,
"Oh, common sweetie; you know fully well what I mean" smolder shot back with mock sternness
"I'm really excited dad" Agate said sweetly "school is going to be great!"
"Oh, look at her honey; all grown up" Thorn murmured to smolder
"Common mom" Agate muttered her pale-yellow scales heating up, "it's not like you won't see me"
As she began to eat some roast camel; an audible blast could be heard outside the walls,
"What was that!?" Thorn yelled her head snaping in the general direction of the sound
"a Dragon flame cactus my queen" a guard responded rushing in "sentries located at the gates report no dragons in the vicinity of the blast"
"Where did it come from!?" thorn roared her face stricken with panic
"We are yet to find the aggressor although the attack made very little sense; as the blast originated from a single cactus, not nearly enough to do any real damage" replied the guard
"A diversion!" Thorn exclaimed "but who for?"
Kizar made his way down a sandstone hallway, after setting off the cactus with a fuse, the guards had sprinted over to inspect the origin of the blast, he had then made his way through the front gate without any resistance, now that he was in, he simply needed to set up an ambush, first however he needed to locate the princesses' quarters,
a red acacia door
Kizar thought to himself, though he doubted his informant had given him completely accurate details,
how many red acacia doors could there be its not exactly a dessert tree!
There! the door he was looking for, a red hued door roughly carved and slightly small for its hinges
Probably made it herself
he guessed,
Well let's find an ambush spot shall we
All he had time to do was jump into a leather satchel as a dragon walked through the opened door.
Agate took one last look around her room,
wow I'm actually leaving
The large room suddenly felt small, compared to the vast expanse she would soon explore
The stronghold and nearby desert had been her world for so long, and she had never interacted with many dragons other than sand wings, well there was her sister/aunt Moon, Agate never really knew what to call her, no matter how unimportant a detail,
Well time to go
resting on her side table was the amber teardrop earing Qibli had once given her as a joke, she had kept the "all powerful artifact" though to her it was more of a keepsake to her a reminder of her "big brother", she plopped it into her satchel, before tossing the large pouch across her shoulder before sprinting down the hallway to where her mother and father were waiting.
The flight was the worst thing Kizar had ever experienced, the turbulence caused by the constant wing beats, not to mention inability to see, musty air filled with the smell of slightly spoilt meat smothering him, the darkness managed to make the whole experience worse,
Fuck I should have known it would be her coming in
Kizar felt even worse now, realizing he could have been heading back to his home by the sea, but for now all he could really do was fall asleep...
Kizar woke with a jolt as agate touched down, it was now, Kizar realized that he needed somewhere to hide if the satchel were to be opened, then again, he was in a glorified pouch, so he had to hope a distraction would arise.
"Hello! You must be Agate" a voice snatched Agate's attention,
"How do you know my name?" Agate asked now realizing the voice came from a small female Night wing,
"Well, I read your mind obviously"
"Really?!" agate said feeling slightly worried
"of course, not it's my way of messing with new students, I'm Fatespeaker by the way"
"But how did you know I was Agate, and not some other sand wing?" Agate asked visibly confused
"Well sunny has told me all about you, not to mention you were dropped off by Thorn and Smolder, after Sunny came out to see them."
"Oh, that makes sense" agate agreed, feeling stupid for not putting two and two together
"Any way your cave is at the end of the first corridor, on the left side"
"Thanks, Fatespeaker" Agate responded starting off in the general direction of the cave not Shure how to feel about the encounter,
"Wait you need this!" Fatespeaker shouted from behind
"oh" was all agate could say as Fatespeaker handed her a scroll
"This will tell you your winglet and where your classes are"
Oh, that would have been embarrassing to not know
"thankyouforthehelp" agate managed to mumble before running off to her cave.
Kizar had to hold in his breath as the satchel was roughly chucked to the (what he assumed was a) stone floor,
Ughhhh that hurt, where am I now
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of talons scraping stone, as (he presumed) Agate made her way out of the cave, well he thought it was a cave and the echo was enough to assume so, this train of thought was not helping things whatsoever, as the claustrophobia of being in the satchel, finally became too much Kizar poked his head out of the satchel, as suggested by the sound of Agate walking out, no one was there,
Holy shit I can actually get out now!
Just as Kizar was getting out he realized he had no idea where he was, not to mention this cave was most likely crawling with dragons,
I need to find a place to hide
He took a good look around the cave noticing two beds; one a sand pit the other a hexagonal slab of hardened wood pulp, covered in blankets,
There!
A small hole in the corner of the cave, it would be the perfect place to set up camp, and plan the assassination.
