A/N: Hey guys! I keep reading going back in time fics so I just had to write my own! Not sure where the plot will take me yet, so suggestions in the comments are super welcome!
At the end of the final battle, Harry stood with the elder wand in his hand contemplating what he should do with it. Should he just snap it? Put it up on a shelf? Hide it from the world so no one could ever fight over the stupid thing ever again? He looked at his best friends Ron and Hermione and asked them what they thought he should do.
"Just snap it." Hermione said, "If you get disarmed the allegiance will change and someone will come hunting for it eventually."
"But who's going to know he has it? Dumbledore had it for all this time and no one came after him for it until after he died!"
"Ron, he announced it to everyone when he took down Voldemort, everyone who was in the hall knows now! He couldn't possibly expect everyone in the hall to just let the fact that he is the owner of the Elder Wand slip their minds forever! Someone will eventually decide they could take it from him, and then-"
"Hermione is right, Ron." Harry cut her off "We should just break it and be done with this mess. I already fixed my wand with it, and it's not like I plan on using it anyway. We need to put the past behind us and focus on the future."
"What are you guys doing?" They heard a familiar voice from behind them say, and Harry quickly hid the wand behind his back before turning to see Ginny coming up to see them. "Harry you're dreadful at hiding things, is that the Elder Wand?"
"See?" Hermione said smugly, "I told you everyone would know he had it."
"Nobody disagreed with you, Hermione." Ron replied bitterly.
"You were the one who-"
"Guys!" Ginny cut her off laughing. "Stop fighting, what's got you all acting so secretive in such a public hallway."
"We're trying to figure out what we should do with the Elder Wand." Harry replied
Ginny held out her hand and Harry passed her the wand without a word, she passed it back and forth between her hands for a moment before saying "I think you should break it." and handed it back to him. He nodded and grasped it with both hands and quickly snapped the wand in two pieces. Almost immediately a smoke filled the air around them, causing them to choke.
"What the bloody hell?" Ron coughed, as a figure appeared in front of them. He was a tall lanky man in a black cloak, his hands started to clap as he stared at the four teenagers with a smirk on his face.
"Well done, I didn't think it would take hundreds of years for someone to finally break the damn thing." He chuckled. "You, boy are you the master of the wand?" He asked Harry who was still holding the pieces of the wand in his hands.
Harry stared at the man for a long moment before nodding.
"I sense my other Hallows near, have you collected them all young man? The three have not been so close since they were created hundreds of years ago!"
Harry looked at the man and then realized who he was speaking to. "You're Death, aren't you? You created the Hallows."
The man smiled, "Right you are, boy. Now let's get started, what is your wish?"
"What do you mean 'wish'?" Harry asked.
Death looked gobsmacked. "For collecting the Hallows! Do they not teach you anything in school? The quest to find the Hallows ends when you collect them all and snap the wand!"
"Why was it so important for the wand to be snapped? Shouldn't you be upset about your creation being destroyed?" Ginny asked the man.
"I created the Hallows as a test, the true master of death needs not the wand to be powerful. All he needs is the Cloak to protect him and the Stone to call for advice from the dead. Only the one who decides the world is better without an unbeatable wand in it can truly be the Master of Death."
"Then why create it in the first place?" Ron asked.
Death turned to glare at the boy, "Do not question my tests, I told the brothers to pass along the story of how to unite the Hallows."
"The story doesn't say a thing about destroying the wand, we just didn't want it to fall into the wrong hands." Harry mumbled, scratching his head.
Death looked appalled, but shook his head. "It matters not if you knew what you were doing, You still passed my test! What is your wish, anything your heart desires"
Harry took a while to think about his answer, anything he wanted? "Could you bring people back from the dead?"
Death frowned, "No but I could send you back in time so you could save someone you loved."
Harry stared at Death in shock, going back in time? "Would there just be two of me then? Like with a time turner?"
Death shook his head, "My powers are a bit stronger than a time turner, you would go back in time and take the place of the you that already existed."
Harry frowned, "So if i wanted to go back and save my parents, I'd be a toddler."
"If your parents died when you were a toddler, then yes." Death nodded.
"Harry!" Ginny yelled, "You could go back in time to when you first started Hogwarts, and save everyone!"
He could save...everyone? He could stop everything from happening, and maybe even stop the war from even starting! But he didn't think he could do it alone, how could he when his friends were such a vital part of his life? He just knew he needed them for this.
"Could I bring my friends back with me?" Harry finally asked, and Death Nodded.
"You may bring these three with you, but no one else, as long as they wish to go back."
Harry looked at his friends with pleading eyes, and saw their eyes wide.
"Mate I'm with you if that's what you want to do." Ron replied bravely. He would do anything to bring back his brother. "We can save Fred."
"We can save Sirius," Hermione whispered
"We can get Sirius a trial!" Ginny gasped. "Get him out of Azkaban earlier than the original timeline!"
"We can save Cedric too." Harry said, "If you're all sure, then that's what my wish is. I wish for us four to go back in time to my eleventh birthday, with our memories intact."
Death smiled. "Your wish is my command."
