Slow burn.
I do not own Glee or its characters.
Will was a bit skeptical about approaching Emma's house with a giant boombox in hand. His normally confident front was fading, his hands were sweating, he wasn't sure how to proceed. He swallowed hard and looked back, at the Glee club, his Glee club.
Marley's innocent smile brightened him up, Jake's seemingly eternal confidence inspired him, Ryder's suaveness encouraged him, and Blaine's handsome looks - no, you shouldn't be thinking of one of your own students like that, Schuester, he thought to himself. Blaine's composure was everything he wanted to present. The rest of the students weren't as visible, but he knew they had his back.
They'd always have his back, he told himself. They trusted him and he had to trust himself. He was ready to sing and looked at his students from a distance. He took a deep breath and the song of his heart came out.
"In your eyes," he sang, her outline appearing, "the light, the heat, I am complete," she fully came out with an unexpecting smile on her face.
His students sang in perfect harmony much like himself, not missing a beat, putting his all into the performance. The lyrics flew out effortlessly, making every attempt to woo Emma. Confidence burst out as he finished the song, "In your eyes, in your eyes," one deep breath, "In your eyes…"
He felt euphoric finishing the song, awaiting her reaction. He was not expecting to hear, "Will, are you crazy?"
He chuckled gleefully, "Crazy for you."
Despite her smile, Emma's eyes seemed to believe the contrary, which gave Will a brief moment of doubt. He knew he had no reason to doubt though. He loved Emma. They had gone through so much together, were about to marry one another. She was one of the most beautiful women he had seen. He didn't care about her OCD or her fear of lagoons, she was everything he had wanted.
Everything he had wanted. He looked at her after his students gave them space. Her skin was paler than normal, her smiles not as plentiful, her posture not as composed. This wasn't the same Emma he had fallen for.
"The man you fell in love with parades back to town and you feel like you don't know him anymore," she said, which resonated with him well. Once two lovers, now romantic strangers.
"Why couldn't you talk to me about it?" he asked her.
"What was I supposed to say, Will? Let's postpone the wedding all over again…" she said, her speech getting more frantic.
He thought back to his time in D.C. and what happened, how it changed him for the better. He remembered missing Emma, but she wasn't the only name that popped into his mind. She was a big support, but not his rock, that would've been none other than Finn Hudson, his best friend.
In many ways, Finn reminded him of himself, but he was also more stable and had come back from more than Will ever could've. For that, he admired him in spite of their age gap. Like Emma, Finn had changed a lot throughout the years, going from an unsure boy to a confident young man. Not to mention, despite his mind trying to deny it, had become quite the sight. The two maintained amazing synergy and their friendship was never complicated, much less so than a romantic relationship.
"So what do we do now?" his ex-lover asked, snapping him out of his thoughts about the ex-quarterback.
"I don't think this is working out," Will stated, conflicting emotions brewing within.
"Yeah," Emma sobbed a bit, "It's just I really, really wanted this to work and if I hadn't been so…" her remaining thoughts were interrupted by a finger in front of her lips.
"Not another word. You're amazing, Emma, but I have so much to work through. I don't know where I stand and," he chuckled nervously, "I don't even know if I have feelings for someone else or not."
Emma gasped, "Is it Terry?"
"No, no, I just need time to sort through my feelings," he responded.
She looked down and said, "Maybe this is for the best then."
"Yeah, so we're through?" he questioned, unsure of their status.
She gave a slight smile and said, "I guess so, but for what it's worth, I enjoyed every minute."
She went up and kissed him on the cheek after which he replied somberly, "Me too."
She returned to her dwelling and gave him a slight wave. He waved back and headed in the direction of his car. He had a lot to work on before he was ready for any romance. In the meantime, he'd prefer to stick to friendships.
He thought it'd be smooth sailing with Finn. He told him it was an accident and he didn't mean to kiss Emma. Will knew they were through, so it shouldn't bother him so much, but it felt like a knife twisted in his heart. The same heart was racing with rage as he slammed shut the door to his apartment.
He took off his vest, threw it onto the sofa, and entered his bedroom, slight tears in his eyes. Had it been anyone else, he wouldn't have been so shocked. But Finn was his best friend, practically co-captain of the Glee club, why would he do such a thing?
He was tormented more than his breakup with Emma had ever caused him. It was as if Finn had broken up with him. Those thoughts made it worse, acting as if he and Finn were a couple. He stopped denying finding him attractive, he was an adult and wooed his fair share of ladies before. This was impacting him more than he expected.
Even the Glee club tried to smooth it over. Will wanted to say something to him before the end of the day, but he was gone with only Marley having an idea of his whereabouts, something about wanting to be a teacher. Had he inspired him that much? Will's heart skipped a beat with joy before the rage took over again. He didn't need him, he needed to focus on himself, his career, and the Glee club.
