As June got on the plane to freedom alongside a man who was a former driver for a commander, she thought about her mother who was somewhere in the colonies. Was she even still alive? Either way, she had left June. The same way that she must now leave her daughter Hannah. However, her thoughts were interrupted as a missile almost hit the plane. At once, the pilot flew as fast as he could avoiding the missiles. It took everything that the pilot had, but he managed to reach Canadian air space.
As it dawned on June and her fellow passenger that they were safe at last, she let out a cry of joy as she wept. However, as she threw her arms around her fellow passenger in a hug, her thoughts wandered back towards Hannah.
Oh Hannah, I'm so sorry! I didn't know where you are, but I promise that your Daddy and I will find you as soon as I find him. June thought to herself.
After what seemed to take forever, the plane finally landed and the 3 of them were greeted refugee workers and shuffled off into separate areas.
A woman talked to June as she asked "What's your name?"
"My name is June Osborne and I'm a citizen of the United States." June replied.
As the woman wrote something down in her notebook, she asked questions like when she was born and did she have any family members in Canada.
"Yes, my husband Luke Bakole." June answered.
"Are you in any danger of facing cruel punishment and torture if you return to Gilead?" The woman questioned.
A look of fear quickly appeared on June's face as she begged "Please, don't send me back! They'll torture me! They've raped me repeatedly and now I'm pregnant!"
A look of shock appeared on the woman's face before she managed to compose herself before she asked "Do you want to see a doctor…?"
"Just find my husband!" June pleaded.
As the woman ran off to do that, it dawned on June that this was the first time in 3 years that she was able to call Luke her husband openly again.
As June sat in the room and silently cried, the woman returned to the room with two people, one she didn't recognize and the other was…
"Luke!" June cried as she got up from her seat and rushed into the arms of her husband.
"June!" He cried as he wrapped his arms around her.
The couple cried in both joy that they were together again and sadness that their daughter was still trapped in Gilead.
They cried for what seemed to be for a long time until they broke apart and realized that the others had left the room to give them some privacy.
Still they didn't know what to say to each other at first.
Then, Luke broke the silence with "I missed you so much, I thought about you and Hannah every day."
"So did I, but it hurt at times, especially in the beginning." June replied.
"What did they do to you?" Luke inquired before he changed the subject and added "Never mind, we'll talk about that when you're ready. Let's just go home."
"Where is home?" June asked.
Luke was quiet for a moment before he added "For now, it's in a small apartment in Little America."
As a Uber drove Luke and June down the streets of Toronto, June couldn't help but feel a mixture of overwhelming awe and tearful happiness at the sight of truly free women in the city. When they arrived at Little America however, her excitement started to wane.
The town was clearly poor and the apartment that they stopped at didn't look nice.
As if he could sense her thoughts, Luke looked at June and said "I know it's not much, but it's our home for now."
Then, he smiled and added "I have a surprise for you."
June looked a little worried at that as she asked "What kind of surprise is it?"
"Nothing but the good kind, let me assure you." Luke replied gently and lovingly as he led her inside.
Even though June knew that Luke would never hurt her the way, the Waterfords, Aunt Lydia and the guardians had hurt her, she had to remind herself of that fact over and over again during the elevator ride to the apartment. As soon as she stepped inside, she heard the voice of Moria call out in disbelief "June? Is it really…?"
Then, she let out a laugh of joy as she rushed towards June and scooped her up in a hug and cried out "June! You escaped!"
"So did you!" June replied before she added "How did you do it?"
"You first." Moria replied.
"Who cares how any of us escaped?" Luke interjected "The point is we're out of that terrible place and we're together."
Except for Hannah. June sadly thought to herself.
As if he could sense her thoughts, Luke looked at June and said "Don't worry, we'll find a way to save her. For now, I need to introduce you to Erin."
As Luke introduced June to the third member of their home, June felt a mix of emotions go through her. She was free at last, but she had to leave Hannah behind. Not to mention that she was pregnant with Nick's baby and she had started to fall for him.
How am I going to tell Luke? What am I going to do? Will he accept the baby? June thought to herself as she realized that she wanted the baby. Even though she had been forced to sleep with Nick, she still grew to love the baby and wanted to keep it. Right then and there, June vowed that Gilead won't take this child from her, the same way that they took Hannah.
I'll deal with this all tomorrow. I just wanna enjoy being with Luke and Moria again. June decided as she joined the group as they sat down in the living room/dining room/kitchen as they had a welcome home dinner for June.
